But this was hands down the worst sushi I've ever had... and I'm not even sure it qualifies as sushi. I started with the gyoza (dumplings), and honestly--they were excellent. Easily top 3 I've ever had. That got me excited for the sushi. Then the rolls came out. They were massive, piping hot, drenched in a brown sauce, and topped with what they called "spicy crab." First bite? Complete shock. It was still hot and had this strange, almost chemical oil taste. I didn't spit it out out of respect for the people sitting nearby, but it was bad. I tried a second roll thinking maybe it was just that one--but nope, same exact taste. This time I had to grab a napkin and spit it out. At that point, I asked for a drink refill just to get the taste out of my mouth and debated saying something--but honestly, I didn't feel like dealing with the back-and-forth of explaining that the food was basically inedible. I asked for the check and left after only one bite of each roll. For reference, the rolls were the "Caroline" and the one right above it on the menu. I'd strongly recommend staying away from their sushi--period. Ended up going next door to Cracker Barrel just to salvage the night.

I ordered the steak medium rare and teriyaki chicken. My wife ordered the crispy fried shrimp plate and the Whiteville roll with avocado. This dish was great. Fried crab, avocado and cream cheese wrapped in rice. It came with pickled ginger and wasabi. My dish was done perfectly. The steak was served medium rare and the teriyaki chicken tasted authentic. My wife's shrimp dish was crispy and seasoned just right. Throughout our dinner Haley was professional and attentive. The dinner was so good! And more than enough food. We each took home leftovers. It's $10.99 (dinner price) and you can make 2 trips. You can't take it with you if you don't eat it... but that's typical for buffet type places. (Though don't mistake this for a buffet... you'll get quickly corrected!) There's only 2 things that limit this place in being 5 star. The first is a note at the door that you could be charged for uneaten food (supposedly to help save costs, but I'm not sure how that would work). This type of food is really difficult to judge though and that's my first complaint. Rice and noodles can be misleading when trying to decide how much you can eat. You may get a completely reasonable portion size, but the rice will take you by surprise and suddenly you can't finish the rest of your plate. I don't think it's fair to charge double for food you've already paid for. The second thing is a customer service issue. As you read in reviews from different sources, the lady who seems to be managing (could be owner?) the place severely lacks in people skills. When you are the face of a customer service business then you need people skills. She lacks them in spades. We found a work around for the uneaten deal. One of us ordered off the regular menu (which can still be customized and is just a couple dollars more... key is this food can be taken out), and the others off the "buffet" type deal. When a couple of the kids couldn't finish, we put the food on the plate of the menu order and got a takeout box. We had a whole nother meal that way. You aren't charged for uneaten food on an order from menu, so we avoided extra charges that way.

It took us a while to our sandwiches (4 cheese melt and steak melt) but the staff were very patient and answered all our questions. We decided to eat outside and our food was delivered with a smile. Bread was thick and nicely browned, like Texas toast. 4 cheeses included pepper Jack which was a surprise, and may have been mentioned. That cheese was also in the steak, and that was fine. Steak was strictly ok, not a lot of meat taste but nice consistency. Added mushrooms were plentiful and tasty. Both sandwiches were large enough to fill hungry travelers. Overall I'm glad we stopped and tried Sun-sational. If we once again find ourselves in Whiteville I would stop and try something else, because all the sandwiches looked creative and a good value. Recommended!
