Appropriately located in Judiciary Square, one block away from DC Superior Court, this memorial leads its visitors around a circular structure where the fallen have their names engraved on white stone. While walking, visitors cannot help but notice the statues of lions and lion cubs lying on the white stone at the very entrances/exits of the memorial. Although a bit odd to those expecting to see police badges and statues of men and women in uniform, the image of lions watching over their cubs serves as a metaphor for law enforcers watching over the country's citizens. Confusion aside, the Law Enforcement Memorial does its job by providing a place for family, friends, and officers just looking to pay their respects to the fallen in general to properly reflect and mourn.

The lions and the sayings beneath them really moved me. I found my fallen brothers names on the wall and appreciated being able to use a pencil to do a rubbing of their names. All of the names of the fallen reinforced how dangerous this profession can be but also made me feel honor to stand alongside the names of my brave fallen brothers and sisters. I am disappointed that the memorial is in such a non descript place with no real fanfare but I won't look a gift horse in the mouth. The reflecting pool was not on when we were there. I hear they are making a museum and I look forward to seeing that. Good luck finding the store that sells the National Law Enforcement Memorial Merchandise. It took us forever to find it (we got directions from some fire fighters, maybe that the problem - lol - just kidding - love my fire fighting peeps). When we did finally find it several blocks away, I ended up spending WAy too much money. Super cool items for sale in there. I brought something back for everyone in the department. Must see if you are in law enforcement or can appreciate the ultimate sacrifice that these men and women gave to keep others safe.

Rhizome DC is one of the most unique things in all of Washington, DC. It's an arts community/space…read morein a stand alone family home in Takoma. On the first floor in the living room is where musicians perform their art. My wife, baby, and friend attended a 24-hour music concert where anyone could bring an instrument and join in. When we entered, there was a $10 suggested donation box. In the back was an artists painting to the music with books scattered on the floor. No one acknowledged us at all, which was odd. The upstairs is a public art gallery with art on the walls for sale. One room allows you to add to the art by using a sharpie to write anything on the walls from a drawing to poerty. If you want a creative experience in DC, come here. It proves DC is more than politics.

This was my first time coming to the Capital Pride Celebration. I was invited by a few friends so…read moreI decided to go and show my support. The vibes were festive, celebratory, and expressive. There were vendors, free giveaways, DJs, food, young adults, seniors, people in wheel chairs, people of every age, race, color, creed were there. What stood out to me were the Drag Queens completely decked out, approachable and available for photo-ops. The weather was hot. It's a good idea to come with an Iced water bottle to stay hydrated. The event was well organized. There were scheduled events all over the city. The website described what was going on from free to ticketed events.

I've attended a few times and can't believe that I have never reviewed Capital Pride. Granted, most…read moretimes I am here to work at a booth for my place of work, but every so often I get to be out and explore. (Apologies for such a late post for this review, I'm just that backed up on reviews). Like I said, when I am usually here, it is t be working a booth during the festival day...or, come to think of it, marching in the parade. Being on the side of things where you are participating in the events and having to deal with the organization is a a bit eye opening. Participating usually starts rather early and towards the last three months of the year prior. It moves rather quickly and you have to have all your ducks in a row. However, if you do, it goes rather smoothly. Especially if you already have an account and know what you are doing. Steps progress rather quickly and you will be uploading documents, attending mandatory meetings, and be upon your way to the day. The only downside here is that they seem to make the meeting (that could be an email) for participants mandatory. It's not easy to work that into your schedule, last minute I might add, when you are travelling for work. Come the day of the events and they run rather smoothly. The festival day is packed full of people and it is crazy how everything goes off without a hitch. Music is everywhere, people are having a good time, and the smells are wonderful. All the vendors offering food make it feel like you are at a state fair. Hopefully one of these years I'll have time to explore more and just be here on my own time. Wish it would be next year as DC will be hosting World Pride.

Open only five days a year on select holidays (Emancipation Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Labor…read moreDay, and Veterans Day), visiting Woodlawn Cemetery is a gateway to some of the city's richest history. Created in 1895, this historic Black cemetery is home to many famous poets, politicians, educators, activists, and those who fought in America's wars. 36,000 people spread across 22.5 acres are buried here, including many from two Black cemeteries razed for development (like Graceland Cemetery destroyed to build Hechinger Mall). I stopped by around 10 a.m. on Memorial Day. The gates were open and the kind volunteers who upkeep the cemetery were there greeting people with a smile. The cemetery is on a hill and gravestones are spread out across the land.
