For a certain type of person, one who likes to cook and who has a dull child's understanding of…read morepersonal discipline and responsibility, a store like Chef City is the kitchen supply equivalent of a cocaine emporium, where the offerings are enticing, expensive, addictive, and ultimately, unable to permanently satisfy one's urge. It's me. I'm that person. And that's why I've shopped at Chef City for years. Chef City has been there for me when I needed a good knife; a deep-fryer; a set of mixing bowls; and an 80-quart stock pot with a basket, for boiling crawfish. But "need" has played a very small part in my relationship with the place. Just as no one needs cocaine, I don't need most of the very cool stuff that Chef City sells. Nonetheless, I'd buy a lot of it, just to have it, and the fact that I don't is less a result of rational thought than of my fear of damaging of my marriage. The store doesn't always have what I want, but the staff is always accommodating, and, adorably, when I show up with a difficult-to-meet requirement, I get the sense that they really hope they can help. "Adorable." Yep, that's what I said. And I promise you that no one has ever referred to anyone at Amazon - from Bezos to the delivery driver - that way.

Stopped by this Costco in Palm Desert to fill up on gas, and go inside (if not too crowded). Found…read moreit to be so less crowded than our neighborhood SoCal ones. Gas has reached over $6 a gallon now, so actively looked for a Costco while traveling from Palm Desert to Joshua Tree. The entrance to the gas station is not meant for high volume, with the eight lanes (4 islands, 2 pumps each so no need for parallel parking in a middle spot) having space for 3 individual cars behind. Once those fill up, there is no space except to go out to the street. Price was significantly less than the surrounding stations, and the paying/pumping was exactly the same as every other Costco (one tap if you have the Citi Costco card). We did go inside the Costco, with the mandatory membership card tap to enter. Once we got our few items, lines weren't too bad with additional checkers using hand held scanners to individually scan each item in the cart, eliminating need to have to put any items on the conveyor. It does make it faster...it's not Amazon Fresh that needs the RFID 'scan the whole cart at once' technology, but Costco. The food court is inside and wasn't too crowded, and would have stopped if we didn't have other plans. The $1.50 hot dog/drink special always tempts me.

I stopped by for my usual favorites, and the number one item on my list is always the beef bacon. It's hands down one of the best products they carry. Yes, it's a little pricier than traditional bacon, but the quality is outstanding and well worth every penny. Plus I don't eat pork so it's a staple in my home. An added bonus? Save the beef tallow after cooking--it has so many great uses in the kitchen! Another reason I love shopping here is the produce section. Today I picked up raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries, and every package looked fresh and beautiful. Unlike some warehouse visits, I didn't have to dig through multiple boxes just to find a good batch. This is also my go-to spot for heavy cream and buttermilk, especially since I make homemade bread. The prices are excellent, and they consistently have the larger sizes I need. One thing that really sets this location apart is the customer service. The greeters and cashiers are always welcoming, friendly, and genuinely personable, making every visit enjoyable. I also appreciate that the Business Center is much less crowded than a traditional Costco warehouse. Most shoppers are business owners grabbing what they need, so it's a much quicker and more relaxed shopping experience. Their early opening time of 6:45 a.m. is another huge plus, and although they close around 6:00 p.m., I never feel rushed if I'm already inside finishing my shopping. If you're ever in the area, do yourself a favor and pick up the beef bacon. Trust me--you won't be disappointed. You can thank me later!
