After two months of pain I scheduled and appointment with Dr Self. He diagnosed foot fracture in three bones and put me in a boot. I had read the comments about the boot and had a couple people make jokes about the boot doctor. Well his diagnosis was perfect and although I wore the boot for almost four months, I followed his instructions. So glad I did, I have recovered with no swelling, discolorization, pain and am enjoying the pain free enviroment. Buckle up this one gets a bit long winded. Years ago I had foot pain (plantar fasciitis). I went to a different foot doc. He used foam pads and had custom insole made. Clear it up in a heart beat. Near 8 years later and I've lost those insoles. The pain is back. I doc I went to before has retired. I go see doctor todd self. They got me in quick. Doc was nice enough. I tell him the story of needing new insoles. He repeatedly tells me that previous doc didn't do things right, my $200+ redwing boots are cheap and I need wedges in my shoes. I have to always use the wedges or risk reinjury. Always use the wedges as in Get up in the middle of the night to pee, I need the wedges. I buy them. $30 was reasonable. Always wearing my boots. Not reasonable. Foot pain persist. Boots are uncomfortable with wedges. I go online order foam foot imprints and they make me custom insoles. 2 days in those and I feel an improvement. Throwing out the wedges. In short I came in with diagnosis and treatment. Paid him money and accomplished nothing then found the correct treatment online. read more

Shame! Shame! It seems Dr. Self had a modus operandi. Diagnose a fractured foot and torn tendons by using a sonogram (apparently this isn't the way to diagnosis these things) put you in a big black boot for 2 months. I heard this story from a number of his patients AND the Adventist Health Orthopedic offices in Sonora. "Don't take one step on your foot or it may break," he told me. So I wore that $%#@ boot for 8 weeks, sitting on the couch. Terrified to get in and out of the shower, terrified to move much. I never had a fractured foot, I have a few spurs. Now my muscles are atrophied, I am terribly out of shape. On a positive note, he is charming and his staff is nice. read more

Dr Self misdiagnosed me and I wore one of those awful boots for two months to heal a fracture that didn't exist. Two orthopedic surgeons confirmed no fracture. I was livid as I lost two months of my life basically unable to do anything. Do not let this guy diagnose you with an ultrasound. He doesn't know how to read them nor are they typically used to diagnose fractures according to orthopedic surgeons. in fact, go somewhere else! After reading the other reviews where he did the same to others, I'd go so far as to say this guy is nuts! read more

What a sweet guy! Office was quiet and efficient; very well run. Dr. self did far more than I expected while making me feel comfortable.

I needed help with my plantar fasciitis. Self did an ultra sound on my heel and declared I had a fractured heel. Sent me off with a pneumatic cast with a 8-10 week ordeal. I wanted a second opinion, after all heel fractures are not common. Come to find out after a MRI and X-ray both read "No Fracture"!! This was after 3 weeks with a cast. I had more pain than before seeing him. He caused me so much extra pain and so much inconvenience with his false diagnosis. I'm just glad that I didn't wait for a recheck after 6 weeks. Really, what is he doing diagnosing fractures without proper pictures?? DO NOT GO TO HIM!! Read other reviews and you will see similar testimonies. I wish I had!!!! Talk about caring, compassionate & giver of excellence, Professional diagnostic treatment; Doctor Self does it all. From the moment you walk through his door or should say, I hobbled in. The office staff is very pleasant and on top of it. Doctor Self's Nurses are great and thoughtful. Doctor Self stayed and waited for me. Sure beats a trip to ER. His expert care took out the stress I had about my injury healing properly. Have to go a long way to find such a wonderful Physician. read more

This so called doctor only wants to sell you a boot, he used a sonogram to say my heel was broke in two places had to pay $500 for the visit and boot went to another doctor and found that my heel wasn't broken. read more

Dr Self misdiagnosed my foot pain as stress fractures. After 10 non weight bearing weeks, the problem was not resolved. An MRI showed that the bones had never been fractured. New podiatrist diagnosed Morton's neuroma.... new tennis shoes and orthotic insoles, and cortisone shots, I think I'm on the road to recovery. read more

Dr Self has the worst attitude! I came in to just ask a quick question about my boot. I had been wearing it a few days and it hurt the bottom of my foot. He had such an attitude and made me feel so stupid. There is no compassion in him for people's questions. He even told me I shouldn't have to wear my orthotic in the boot which helps me so much and he made for me. I would not recommend him at all. read more

DO NOT see this doctor for bunion surgery unless you are over the age of 70. I had a bunionectomy last year and have been told by two other surgeons that the procedure that was done on my toe was the wrong choice for my age and activity level. Prior to having surgery, I walked two miles per day, skied, hiked, ran, did weight training and enjoyed getting dressed up occasionally in high heels. I have run a half marathon, I'm a personal trainer and taught group fitness classes. Unfortunately I am facing a revision surgery, but nothing can be done to return me to the mobility and activity I had prior to the surgery performed by Doctor Self. Essentially I am unable to run, jump, wear heels, (for the rest of my life) I have daily pain (after 10 months). My big toe was shortened about a centimeter, maybe more, and does not reach the ground when I stand which affects my balance, a major marker of aging. In essence, years have been taken off my life in terms of my activity and I have to go through an additional surgery which will include a bone graft to attempt to regain some of the length of my big toe and make it function properly. The thought of undergoing another surgery and the pain and suffering of the recovery process is quite daunting and depressing, but I've been told by both surgeons I've spoken to that without a revision my big toe will continue to retract and "buckle" resulting in more pain and even less mobility. Please, if you are recommended surgery by Dr. Self, do yourself a favor and get a second opinion. My life will never be the same. It sounds dramatic, but it is the absolute truth. Each day when I wake up and put my feet on the floor I'm reminded of my terrible mistake. read more

I went to Dr Self for recurrent ingrown toenails. He recommended a procedure to remove part of the toenail. I developed serious infections of both toes. He denied that they were infected and declined my request for antibiotics, until I insisted. He discharged me from service, although I had an active infection, which he denied. I went to my primary, who confirmed the infection and required three courses of antibiotics to heal. I consulted an out of the area podiatrist, who also confirmed that I had a "raging infection" and it resulted in the loss of both toenails. I found him to be arrogant and insensitive to a serious complication of his procedure. To release a patient from care, while still having problems, is irresponsible! I would never recommend him to anyone. I know others that had bad experiences also! read more

He is great and very nice. Took care of all my feet problems and was always there if I needed anything.

I recently was referred to Dr. Self and both he and staff were professional, gave good advise and were professional.

I was very pleased with his care, until I went for a toenail removal. I am disabled and have a service dog, which was tended to in the waiting room by a friend & neighbor. He is very well-trained, well-behaved and obedient. Apparently, during the hour + long procedure, he got up off the floor, shook and laid back down in a different position. This caused Dr. Self's receptionist to yell at me and tell me not to bring my dog back because he is "out of control". Of course, I ignored her, as ADA regulations forbid her from taking my dog most places. When I went back for my 1-week follow up on my nail removal, I was refused to be seen because I had my service dog with me. Now I have to find another podiatrist to do my surgery follow up. You will not find a better foot doctor in our area, guaranteed! Dr. Self performed a few major surgeries, and I was the happiest patient. From the minute I went into surgery, and hours after when I woke up from the anesthetics, he was there. He also gave me his home phone number, so if I had concerns, or an emergency after surgery, I could call him. No other doctor would ever do that! He is skilled and passionate about his work. My 13 year old daughter needed to have bunion and metatarsal repair. We had originally scheduled surgery with another doctor. Because of a recent move and distance to the doctor, we had to switch to another podiatrist close to home. We were so thankful we found Dr. Todd Self. We discovered there was some new treatment available that would allow her to keep most of her bone structure intact. Her doctor not only recommended this new treatment, but he also pointed out some additional issues regarding her foot's stability. We always thought my daughter was a little clumsy, but in reality there were issues with the structure of her feet aside from the metatarsal alignment. Doctor showed us how her feet would collapse, causing her to trip and fall often in addition knee pain. All this was due to misalignment. What I appreciate about Dr. Todd Self is he took a bigger picture approach to her healthcare needs! Dr. Self is not in the Chiropractor category of Yelp but he definitely ended up categorized there in my personal life. I have visited 10 chiropractors and muscle therapists for over 13 years and have learned much from all of them, however none of them have ever been able to get to the root of my biggest prob.....that kink in my lower back. No adjustment ever seemed to stay in place for long.....weak back? not enough core strength? possibly.... if humans were supposed to go walking around on one leg that is :( Dr Self took a quick look at me, stuck a shim under my left foot and all of a sudden everything back to neck and range of motion evened out. After that he spent more time explaining the mechanics of how I stand and walk and addressed each problem point. It all made total sense. The custom orthodics he made were pricey but actually addressed my problem in contrast to all the time and money I've spent trying to put a bandage on my shorter left leg and flat feet. I wish I had known about him 20 years ago as I'm sure I could have saved myself all the knee and back injuries that have shaped my life since. But I now live with much less pain, can lift a lot more without that weak feeling that my back my pop out at any minute, and probably most important, I am armed with the right info to make sure my son doesn't have to go though the same thing. Update 1 yr after treatment: I stopped using the custom orthodics as much when we installed a nice new (WHITE) carpet and I started taking my shoes off whenever I was inside. Same old back problems starting to return. I'm calling Dr Self for a second pair so I can wear inside shoes. I'm sure things will go back to normal soon :) read more

Dr Self did not help me at all. I wanted my orthotics recovered and he told me to just cut the top part off and stick it under the pad that came with the shoe. He also sold me a pair of heel lifts for 25.00. I found the exact same thing on the internet for 11.00. I have gotten a refund from them. I did not find him professional at all. read more
