I will be the first to admit that I am indeed, a retired hipster. While my glory days are largely over, I will admit that there are places at night that I still like to go to whenever being a homebody just won't cut it, and I crave human interaction and live music in a setting that is close to home. Today X Future is one of those places that genuinely feels like home. Maybe it's because it's part-owned by a good friend I went to school with, and maybe it's because Cubao (Cubao City, as nicknamed by some of the other aging hipsters like me who like to hang around here), is a comforting place that reminds me of my hipster past.
TXF used to be located at the center of Cubao X, the ultimate hipster hangout from days of yore, until it found its new home tucked into a gentrified area not a few blocks away. Nevertheless, Future is always a great place to be, because it's another one of those bars you visit whenever you want to see friends. You can go alone, just to 'pass by,' but you will most likely see familiar faces who will goad you into staying, and lure you with promises of buying a few rounds. Try not to listen, because it is a very, very effective trap. A trap that I willingly give into each time, because the loveliness of seeing familiar faces, coupled with excellent DJ sets on almost any given day of the week (as well as occasional live sets), is a loveliness I need in my life.
Although, occasionally, its hipster reputation does make me shiver just a little bit. But I make an effort to go on days that I know are geared towards aging/retired hipsters like me - I particularly enjoy their hip-hop nights! read more
