The menu is not extensive, but is varied. The food is fresh and beautifully prepared and presented. I am usually prepared for mediocre food in chain hotel restaurants, but the Larder has not failed to exceed expectations on every visit. The service is good but not too intrusive, and although, being a hotel, there are often large business parties, the attention you receive from staff is personal and warm. The fish dishes are particularly delicious and one marker of the restaurant is that I've never had a dessert, which means that the portions are generous. I know that hotels are not always first choices for a meal out, but I can't recommend the food and the staff at the Larder in the Hilton at Croydon highly enough.

It's been given a much needed face lift, bringing it into the 21st Century and the same goes for the quality of the menu. As soon as you step foot through the door, you feel welcome - the staff are sociable and give the feeling that they like working there. The decor is contemporary without feeling stark - in fact it feels extremely comfortable both in the main bar area and the restaurant. Great lounging chairs and cosy corners compliment the muted tones and wooden floors. This isn't a 'spit and sawdust' kinda joint, but it doesn't turn it's nose up at the punters either. The food as I mentioned before is just delicious. Great flavours, not too much to choose from but a perfect balance of everything to suit everyone. Who could ask for more? I was very disappointed in my visit here. We stopped in on a Sunday for breakfast and they were…read morebusy with around an hour wait. Totally understandable. Sunday brunch time. So, we decided to get something for takeaway rather than wait. At the takeaway window the guy was disorganised and took a unnecessarily long time to take our order. Then when placing the order based on what was on the menu he said that changed. In this case a child's menu item that was supposed to come with hash browns. But it turns out it doesn't anymore. Then update your menu! So, he charged us for a side of hash browns. Then after getting the terrible service, from the dismissive guy working, they charged a service fee. Seriously? A 4.40 service fee for being slow and doing a terrible job. So my friend went to talk to the manager about the service charge and not providing items on the menu, the person he spoke to kept trying to dismiss him because they were "busy" and didn't have time to address his issue. Eventually he did get the service charge and hash browns refunded. After all this the breakfast burritos were ok at best. Large does not always equal good. And being busy is not an excuse for bad service.

There's been a pub on the site since at least 1726, when Wallington was but a hamlet: it was originally called Bowling Green House. Between 1726 and 1773, it appears to have acted as a lodging house for travellers, and became the Duke's Head some time between 1740 and 1806. The present building is mid-Victorian and was bought by Young & Bainbridge in 1857, although it had been supplied with Young's beers since before 1832. It is listed at grade II, despite suffering bomb damage during World War II. The pub itself has a rather domestic, whitewashed exterior, with the new hotel extension sitting behind the original pub. The lounge bar interior is reminiscent of the 'roadhouse' style of pub - a large central bar area serving a spacious, multi-roomed interior, with lots of wood panelling, and a mixture of banquette seating and tables. There's a small outdoor drinking area at the front, facing Wallington Green (not quite as picturesque as it sounds, given that the Green is small and bounded on two sides by busy roads), and a large enclosed beer garden at the rear. They serve a couple of Young's Beers and a guest, which on our visit was Courage Directors, alongside Young's Bitter and Special. They do an extensive range of food, from soup, salads (from £7.95), sandwiches (from £4.95), Pizzas (from £7) and more substantial main courses, with daily specials, from around £10-£17. The function rooms are a very popular for wedding receptions, with the added benefit of accommodation for visiting guests on site. The hotel rack rates are pretty hefty (£115 for single and £120 for doubles) but can drop to around £80 for two people sharing a twin room with full English Breakfast if you hunt around on-line. Although very busy, we were served reasonably quickly, although (alas) not with a smile, and a few of the locals were a bit raucous (presumably had been drinking all day). The Young's Special however was in tip-top condition.

This pub has notions; even pubs in Chelsea are not this expensive. How they get away with it in Wallington is anyone's guess.

Every time I have been around the High Street, I've seen Kelsey House and kept thinking that I should check it out... and we did! We had time to kill before seeing a movie, so we walked down to Kelsey House. It's easy to find because it is on the corner. I would suggest walking, if you can because the parking on the street is usually occupied, but the nearest car park is about a 5 minute walk up the High Street. They do have outdoor seating and while it is facing a busy High Street, it is better now because the pavement has been extended, putting a bit more space between the tables and traffic. We chose to sit inside because it was quite a warm day. Inside is very hipster... from the decor to the staff, but it is proving very popular! Based on the number of families inside, I would say that this is a child-friendly place. The menu seems to be focused on 'street food'... and brunch. There are a few salads on the menu, but think small plates, burgers, and sandwiches. If you are a fan of gin, they have a nice list of gins, along with a number of craft beers. Because I didn't want to end up asleep during the film, I went with one of their non-alcoholic cocktails... the Virgin French Martini. It was delicious and I didn't miss the alcohol at all! I just wish it came in a bigger glass ;) I struggled because I wanted to try out some of the small plates, but really had my eye on one of the sandwiches. I ended up ordering the Volcano Sandwich while Mr. Snarky went with the Full House Burger. The sandwiches/burgers looked really good, but they were definitely messy. I was surprised that the slaw was actually on the side rather than in the sandwich... which is where I thought it would be. Mr. Snarky said he also enjoyed his burger... except for the burger. To be fair, I am never really sure why Pulled Pork and/or Brisket has to be ruined by using it as a condiment to put on top of a beef burger. And I think that was the issue, the burger didn't really need to be there and it kind of took away from the rest of the sandwich. We really enjoyed the fries... they said skinny fries and I was worried they would be like shoestrings, but they were a decent size and it was like they twice/triple cooked them because they were quite crispy on the outside. We agreed that they were really good! By the end of it, we didn't have room for dessert. Service is friendly, but a bit on the slow side. The prices... I find a bit mixed. On some items I think they are reasonable, but on other items I think they are a bit pricey... like a hot dog for £10.50. I love a good hot dog, but £10.50... and that's the basic hot dog. It is a lovely place and I'm sure we'll be back again.
