The pub is situated at the top of a hill; normally enough to make one kick they're heels and moan about the walk and can't we go to the Oak, it's closer. On arrival all fears were put to rest, what an outstanding place this is. Recently refurbished from a formally grotty, two-room social club feel, the Cross Daggers has been transformed. Now you'll feel nothing but warmth as you walk in, not just from the decor, the pictures, the furniture but the people too. Outstandingly friendly staff serving wonderfully looked after real ale. There was Black Sheep on tap, and frankly kids it won't get any better than that. The Cross Daggers wins on so many levels and it's greatest achievments is not relying on SKY SPORTS screens all over, pool tables, fruit machines and all that other claptrap. Just good people, great atmosphere and excellent beer. Obviously the Cross Daggers is a locals pub, a little out of the way, but should you find yourself in the area I insist you pop in. This is what British pubs have always been and always should be. Britain at it's very best if you will.

Do they have proper real ales like the ones made by the smaller breweries such as the wonderful local Thornbridge beers, or any beers by Kelham Island or Bradfield Brewery? You can get Black Sheep bitter all over the UK thesedays - it's a beginner's real ale. A mile better than the rubbishy keg stuff but sorry, absoultely not in the same league as some of the beers I mention from the local breweries. A good local pub ought to have local beers - it may be that the Cross Daggers is a tied house - sounds a bit like it. But, appreciate the recommendation and I'll be pleased to pop in and check it out. Will probably just have a soft drink though so I can enjoy a proper beer at the coach and horses just down the road afterwards.

If you've never been to a Samuel Smith's pub then this can seem quite odd at first..but as there own brand stuff is all good quality, there's nothing to worry about. Sam Smith's pubs are really cheap, compared to most other pubs, and there beer is top quality. I really like their Pure Brewed Lager, which is served in a tall glass, German style. This specific pub has a really nice atmosphere, and can be relaxing and quite during the midweek and very busy at weekends. However, if you've come for music or other brash entertainments you won't find it here Overall, great pub, great prices, nice and friendly staff.

The service started befroe we even left - the credit card machine had gone kaput and they phoned ahead to warn us. Once there the atmoshpere was buzzing, warm and friendly - the choice of food was fantastic and I chose the steak and ale pie which was lovely but then I tasted my companion's brisket - divine. The pub has a more formal dining are and a bar with tables, you can reserve a table in either section. Dogs are welcome in the bar area and children are well catered for, plenty of high chairs (although I would recommend reserving one)and colouring books and crayons for the more artistic toddlers. The atmosphere is good, no doubt helped by a decent playlist on the sound system and a number of Pete Mckee canvases on the walls. The beers are from the Thornbridge brewery and are excellent. The food is also very good, priced in the gastropub range, but is worth the price. I'd recommend booking as it can get (unsurprisingly) pretty busy especially on a weekend lunch time. The company that runs the pub have a number of other eateries and I have heard good things about them all.

They offer food that is cheap enough for you to question its quality and the tables out front are usually packed all-year round with threatening-looking hoodies. I'd definitely avoid it if there is an England match being played.
