They were syrupy and artificial tasting... similar to the flavor of Kool-Aid with a shot of rubbing alcohol. We also had the fish dip. Although the presentation lacked, well, presentation, we braved it and tried it anyway. And it was a fail. I'm sure some people can successfully make packaged saltines taste good...but the Monkey failed at this. Think: Gas station tuna salad made a day or so ago. We sent it back. There you go. This review is based off my experience at both the tiki bar outside and the inside restaurant. I came here in May for my "baby moon" with my husband. We almost always stay at the Howard Johnson and mostly because we love the Toasted Monkey so much :) I will start first with the tiki bar. The bartenders are so great! Luckily for us they weren't extremely busy because we went during the week and the weather was kind of over cast, so we received quick service. We made friends with the bartenders because we knew we would be there for a couple days. They kept the beer coming for my husband and the water coming for me (I'm prego) We also ordered their quesadillas and nachos. Both of these were really good and just enough for both my husband and I to fill up on for a couple hours before dinner. The bartender even made us a baby moon shot. Mine was a shot of water lol and my husband had a shot of tequila. LOL. It was so nice of her and really enjoyed their presence. We pretty much were at this bar every day we were there. We tried their chips and queso as well and those were delicious!!!! Now for the inside restaurant. This is not a super fancy place, so it is nothing you have to dress up for and it is super casual. The wait staff are extremely nice and will treat you like family. We came here for breakfast during our stay and unfortunately it was storming, so we couldn't go very far. Luckily this place was open :) I had the BLT with a side of fruit and OMG the BLT is amazing.They put so much bacon on the sandwich and I love bacon so that was awesome for me. My husband ordered an omelette and he loved his food as well. It was super early like 8 or 9 in the morning, so they weren't too crowded, but overall our service was great and the food was amazing. Good enough to visit twice in a week. We like to try new restaurants when we stay in St. Pete Beach and last week was our first visit to Toasted Monkey. The Yelp address for this restaurant is incorrect, they are now at 678 75th Ave. Toasted offers three places to dine, an outside tented area, indoor, or on the rooftop. The first and third options were pretty jammed up but the indoor option offers open air and had far less people. Their menu has some unique items for the area, including a bunch of 'toasted bowls'. I'm generally one to order strictly seafood when staying in the area, but couldn't ignore the Thai Crunch Bowl, which was absolutely divine. On our second trip here I went for the seafood and had the Caribbean mahi. I tend to eat a lot of mahi when we stay in Florida and found theirs to a tad below average. Put it this way, I'd order the Thai bowl if I returned...which I probably will. Great atmosphere here and great service. Cheers! read more

For beach bars on SPB, I prefer a few others generally. If I want to be on the sand itself with a drink, typically Bongos is my place. If I want better music, younger more vibrant crowd and late night club-style partying, Jimmy B's. Used to like Undertow too but they seem to be doing all they can to demonstrate how much they hate their own customers, so Toasted Monkey rounds out my top three currently. Toasted Monkey does have two great things going for it that the others do not. One, their staff turnover rate seems to be much lower so you get to know their bartenders and they're all incredibly nice and friendly people. Second, and more important, there is a really great local reggae band called Impulse who play there certain days. If you Google "Impulse Band Reggae" you should find their Facebook site with schedule. I go by their schedule since Toasted Monkey's is often not up to date. When Impulse is playing, I go to Toasted Monkey. TM has outside and inside seating. When it's busy, it's very cramped, so if you don't like crowds, might not be the best option. Food is simply so-so; it provides nourishment to keep your pub crawl going but not much beyond that. Drinks can be good for a good price depending on bartender and day. Their bartenders are typically pretty good so if one does you wrong on the pour, go to a different one. They have some great drink specials that are available from time to time, for example, Monday and Thursday nights; $2.75 you call it Smirnoff flavors. Weekends, the drinks can get a bit crazy, so you may want to ask about price before you order. All complaints are only minor: 1) This place is attached to a Howard Johnson hotel, and is adjacent to the pool, so you see a lot of people in bathing suits in the bar, and as we know in this wonderful country, that can be a great thing, or a very scary thing. Prepare yourself for sights that cannot be unseen. Yes this can happen at any beach bar, but it seems to happen more here for reasons unknown. 2) The outdoor patio is a bit cramped so if you have a stroller, might be best to forget it in the room/car. 3) The view of the water is not as great as competing properties; you're set back behind volleyball courts and a field of sea oats. 4) There is smoking, and since it tends to be pretty cramped quarters, if that bothers you, you will be bothered. 5) There always seems to be a lot of kids running around on the outside deck. When my kid is old enough to run around, I'm going to be calling it quits on beach bars; just a fact of life I have to face. Other parents don't seem to care, so if you're sitting on the outside patio, and screaming running kids annoy you, well, you know the drill. Parents; see #4. I've been to Toasted Monkey before for drinks and today I decided to stop by for food as well. I love the tropical atmosphere and beachside deck. You can walk right up in your bathing suit and sandy feet. The bartenders work very hard because this place is pretty busy, especially on the weekends. This particular Saturday, we waited quite a while for a waitress to come around but once she recognized our presence, she was attentive. There is a deck outside with tables that seat between 2-6 people and probably can fit around 30-40 people total. Indoors is squishy where the main bar is and a few small tables. The menu is nicely sized based on how small this place is! They also have a volleyball court in front in the sand and corn hole on the side of the building. A shower as well if you need to rinse off! The food was tasty! I had the gator bites which were delicious. Not fishy and not tough like others I've had. They come served with a horseradish mustard sauce. The drinks were also very well made. I had a rum runner which certainly packed a punch! I'd return since they have reasonably priced food for a resort area right on the beach. read more

We asked our bartender at the PCI where to go for drinks and food. This was his recommendation and we were so happy we listened to him. Kristen and Timmy were the most outstanding bartenders/servers we have come across on our whole trip to the area. Very efficient, professional, and fun. We felt like we knew them for years by the way they made us feel so welcome. The food was great, as well as the views of the inlet- and the prices are really reasonable for the area! Me and my husband came here for a late night dinner after our kayak tour. They stay open late because of the bar but we caught them just 20 minutes before they closed at kitchen down. I had the Asian Pork Lettuce Wraps which is an appetizer but is plenty for an entree. They were delicious! I would caution those who are sensitive to wasabi to ask for it on the side. I didn't realize they put wasabi in the sauce that goes on the lettuce wraps, so it made my nose burn lol but other than that very good. My husband also had an appetizer for dinner, the firecracker shrimp which he said was good. If their entrees are are as good as their appetizers then I'm sure you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Very friendly servers and bartenders as well and the patio overlooks the gulf. The beach is really really close and the weather is beautiful (almost year round). We got wings and a salad and it was good, not great but good. The Toasted Monkey is a cool spot on St. Pete Beach for getting some decent grub and relaxing with some live music on the weekends. A nice departure/haven from the sun and sand, the establishment is pretty rustic and no-frills. There is a nice outdoor patio and a volleyball area set up for patrons in addition to a pool out back, as it is adjacent/connected to a Howard Johnson. The food I had has been decent and edible but nothing outstanding. Fish tacos were ok from what I remember. What I did enjoy were the live music acts that perfom there and play a range of hits. On my most recent visit, the band members were chill and nice and interacted with the crowd a bit. So nice we've come twice this trip! We've been to the old location in Howard Johnson and thought it was just ok. We decided to give it a try at the new location and are so glad we did!! Our first visit, it was very rainy, so it wasn't very busy. We got to spend time talking with the bartender hearing about all the great changes. New chef. New menu-All fresh made to order food, so you can change out anything. It was truly fantastic! With it being our last day of eating out, we are picky about the last food decisions we made. We came to enjoy lunch before visiting the beach and were denied entry because covering our faces with our shirts was unacceptable but a banana is acceptable! We came on a slow night, it was cold outside so the place was pretty much empty. I ordered a fried grouper sandwich and a long island iced tea. The grouper was probably the best meal I had in florida and they made such a good long Island! In the middle of the meal I bumped my cup and knocked over my drink. We originally headed to the Bouy restaurant across the street from Monkeys, but they were closed. Monkeys was our first restaurant in this area. We sat outside and the servers wore masks. I ordered the the cream chowder and coconut shrimp, and hubby ordered the the blackened grouper sandwich as recommended by our server. The chowder was definitely creamy (no chunks) and was flavorful and hot! My shrimp were very tasty and good size. The grouper sandwich got an A+. Hard to duplicate that at home. It was a Monday, and not very crowded. The service was spotty, but it was Monday and you should relax, after all you are on holiday. I would have to return again to give them a 5. We just happened upon this place after checking in to our condo for the week. We were starving and this place hit the spot!! Plenty of choices of both food and drinks. We sat on the back tiki type deck that is right off the beach. Music playing, breeze, people enjoying themselves after weeks of quarantine from Covid. Nachos, burgers, fish wraps and fish tacos were excellent. We got a kick out of the guy in front directing people where to park. He's a bit intimidating with the muscle shirt and goatee, but his very slow southern drawl was endearing actually. This place has both and inside and outside bar/seating areas which is nice. I realized I was having so much fun that I forgot to take pictures of everyones food and drinks - so unlike me! The atmosphere is obviously super beach-y. You can even get away with just wearing your bathing suit! There's indoor and outdoor seating, live music, a pool, hot tub, and plenty of seats to lay out on. Not to mention you're right on the beautiful St. Pete Beach! Since it was a Sunday, a local radio station had a booth set up with free giveaways as well as free Naked Turtle Rum giveaways! It's really a fun place for everyone. The food and drinks are tasty and affordable - highly recommend the wings and nachos as well as the Monkey Runner buckets. It's all within $10-$15. Parking can of course be a nightmare, so I would suggest to bring plenty of quarters or download the Parking Pass App on your mobile device. The one other downfall are that the bathrooms are kinda nasty and the line is usually long so just be prepared to wait. read more

We came during the coronavirus outbreak and were happy to place an order for pickup. It was ready in 10 minutes and the employee changed gloves before handling our food, which we appreciated. We got 2 bowls - tuna and shrimp Baja. They were delicious! The menu online did say the shrimp came with rice and it came with quinoa so that was a bit of a letdown. For an app we got chips and queso. The queso was good but the chips were stale. We got a soda to go, since we had to drive. The Pepsi was very flat. 2 bowls, the soda, and queso/chips costs us $40, $50 with tip. The inside of this place looked cool, hopefully we can come back post-virus. We found a table on the upstairs patio. Downstairs there was live music and the vibe was electric! Lots of dancing. We ordered the Chile Lime Shrimp Skewers and Fried Fish Tacos. Might have been the best meal we had on this trip, can't recommend enough. The Chile Lime Shrimp Skewers came with a mango salsa that was delicioussssss. Perfectly flavored, not super spicy. The Fried Fish Tacos were fried perfectly, super flavorful. It came with a side of garlic mashed potatoes that were also amazing. Food was also well priced. The cocktails were good, nothing crazy or different from other beach bars. Overall, I would definitely pay this place a visit on a Friday or Saturday night. Toasted Monkey is a great place for food, drinks, and a view of the stunning intercoastal waterway. They have music 7 days a week. The weekends can be pretty busy and at times requires some patience. I say that because there's a few reviews that show obvious signs of customer impatience. One napoleon even took creepy pictures of hard working employees without their consent. I was at Toasted Monkey a few days ago and it's busy. That is a testament to how great the food, drinks, and atmosphere are. I enjoyed the drinks and evening. But I especially enjoy those working hard to make it happen. With three large bars, it's easy to get a drink or order food. Self centered, impatient customers will still be unhappy and write faceless reviews. But I recommend the Toasted Monkey. Especially at sunset. This is certainly our go to restaurant on the water. Beautiful blue green water at the entrance to Boca Ciega Bay. Rene and Jenni are awesome bartenders/ servers. We had Cobb salad with Blackened Grouper - delicious and plenty of food. Enjoy one of the "bucket" drinks while looking at the people walking by as well as the gorgeous water.
