Does Yelp not exist in Canada? I went to two restaurants that were falsely listed as open, then…read moredrove by a dozen more that I didn't see on the app. Oh well. Anyway, I was in the mood for some fish and chips. Canada isn't Britain, but the Maritimes are pretty close, and I was thrilled to find one that was open. It was a hole in the wall outside of a strip mall, along with kitschy decorations and signs saying parking was for seafood lovers only. I almost ordered some seafood, but I wanted a nice piece of fish, and I got four of them, perfectly cooked, and not at all greasy -- you could eat it with your hands once it cools. Crunchy on the outside, flaky and moist on the inside. Wonderful. Best I've had in a while. Some of the fries were a little soggy, but it was nothing a little pepper and vinegar (white, not malt; is that a regional thing?) couldn't fix. Also, their tartar sauce comes in plastic cups, and annoyingly small ones at that. They could whip up their own in five minutes or less, and save us the trouble of trying to tear off those little foil lids. Despite some minor issues, this was the best fish and chips I've had in a long time. I don't know when (or if) I'll return to Canada, so if not, I'll dream about that fish.

Claudine's is THE gem of Fredericton and consider yourself a lottery winner if you live within an hour. We came for lunch on a week day and if you are too, I strongly recommend taking their suggestion of a reservation. It was packed and we saw people pour in and subsequently disappointed. Once we took a bite, we tasted why. My husband got the seafood fettucine with lobster upgrade and I ordered the lobster benedict and they were both next level heavenly. All seafood used was at the peak of freshness and the flavors well balanced (referring to the pasta dish). It wasn't inexpensive even after converting back to US dollars but it was worth every penny. I noticed a lot of people lingering without ordering more which I thought was rude but maybe it's a cultural thing. Surprisingly, service was quick, the wait for entrees not bad considering how busy they were (lots of big parties) and the staff's passion for what they do is palpable. It may not be in the center of everything but I think not being in the tourist trap area is the ticket, do not miss this epicurean delight if you are visiting Fredericton!

So after shopping there I headed to SBF for a quick lunch. Parking is easy peasy, just find a spot in various areas around the restaurant. Once inside I was warmly greeted and seated quick. The house is beautifully decorated both outside and inside. The local town and area charm is throughout while keeping the history alive. They have a pretty extensive menu and specials for the week. I chose to get the winner winner chicken dinner and the strawberry shortcake. The winner winner chicken dinner came with breaded chicken, mashed potatoes, broccoli and a goblet of gravy. It was all fantastic. A classic dinner, no bells or whistles which is what I was craving... a classic meal. Everything was flavored well and hot. The strawberry shortcake is the classic I know and love in this area of northern Maine. It was a grilled biscuit, whipped cream and juicy sliced strawberries. It was the perfect end to a classic dish. The biscuit was the perfect size and grilled nicely. The staff were so kind. It was great seeing the interactions with other guests. Overall this restaurant is great! It is definitely on my radar for future visits and to pass around to friends.
