This Columbus Avenue location is good overall, but it feels like every time I visit, the layout has changed again. On my most recent trip, I noticed the jewelry section was moved closer to the fitting rooms, and the makeup, skincare, and body products are now near the elevators. Everything feels a bit mushed together at times, which makes browsing a little confusing. The linen section could definitely use improvement there isn't much variety when it comes to pillows or bedding. On the bright side, checkout has gotten faster! I've noticed more cashiers recently, which makes a big difference. I usually stop by this location when I'm looking for something I couldn't find elsewhere, or when I want to compare prices between TJ Maxx and HomeGoods. read more

This is a very small location and not particularly well organized. The fitting room experience is frustrating--they treat every customer as if they're a potential thief. You're required to hand over all items before entering, and the staff takes their time counting everything to ensure sensors are attached. When you come out, the process repeats--they count everything again and ask what you're purchasing. It's honestly quite annoying. Security presence is minimal; the guard usually just stands near the elevator and doesn't seem actively engaged. Occasionally, there are NYPD officers on-site, though it's unclear why. The checkout line is typically very long, but to their credit, it does move quickly. Overall, I give this location 3 out of 5 stars. I usually manage to find something worth buying, but I'm not really a fan of the overall experience at this store. read more

This is a HUGE store, two levels down from the street. Due to an unfortunate mishap in which movers snatched my cashmere coat, leather gloves, and scarf, I needed to replace the gloves and scarf, and possibly buy a hat. TJ Maxx to the rescue! I bought two pairs of gloves, one red and one tan, for $8 each. Not leather, cloth, but warm. I also found an All Saints black beanie. The selection of hats was huge, although most had faux fur pompoms. I wanted a plain one, so was happy to find the All Saints. Even though it was more expensive than most, it's well made. There were also coats and Hunter boots. But I decided that I didn't need another coat or red boots. The changing rooms are not just inconveniently located, but CLOSED. It would have been nice if the security guard whom i asked had mentioned that. There's a large home section, too, with pretty good prices on bedding and Breville appliances. Clothing selection was okay. Some things were beyond hideous, but that's my personal opinion. Some designer coats were priced quite high, IMO. read more

TJ Maxx deserves an update. I spoke to the nicest employee in here today. I was also assisted by two employees taking the elevator to the street level. The escalator was broken. The sales associates on the floor are so nice and they are putting out more cool merchandise. I pointed out some theft I saw on one of the handbag tables. There were empty jewelry boxes. The handbags associate thanked me and said she would take them to the jewelry counter. I felt appreciated. Naturally my daughter found two items. She said the candles she loves are so expensive and she found them in the home decor department. There you go folks, another happy shopping extravaganza! I highly recommend this location. read more

I have been to many TJ Maxx stores and I have to say that this store in general is one of the neatest and organized stores that I have been to. Just because they offer bargain basement prices doesn't mean it has to look like a basement. Everything was clearly tagged and it was very easy to shop here. Their cosmetics department is clean and orderly, plus there are people there actually watching and helping customers. I hate when people open and try the cosmetics and then toss it back on the shelves if they don't like it. It was just so pleasant to shop here. It's a very large store. Upon entering the store you have to take a very long escalator going down and transfer to a shorter escalator to take you further down to enter the store. They also have an elevator available for handicapped and baby strollers. The first time I came here I literally looked for all their fire exits, just in case. This store actually has a clearance dept not for clothes but for everything else which made shopping even more enjoyable for me. This TJ Maxx carries a lot more name brand fashions than any that I've seen in Rochester, Chicago or any other city for that matter. It was mind boggling to actually see the same products here that I saw in Dillard's just a few short weeks ago marked down by forty percent. It is for this reason and many more that TJ Maxx has many loyal customers. We were able to score a few small essentials and browse their vast collection of handbags. In the handbag department, I noticed that they had Gucci, Prada, MK and several other brands of bags marked at a discount. These particular items must go very quickly because upon my return, a couple of days later, they were no longer there. The customer service here is a little sketchy. At the jewelry counter, a customer became irate and began to scream after being ignored for several minutes by the customer service assistant. Instead of the employee apologizing to the woman, addressing the concern and trying to fix it, she ignored her complaints. After the woman finished her rant and angrily walked away, the customer service assistant pretended that she didn't hear anything the woman said and inquired about the customer's whereabouts. Additionally, there weren't much staff around and to assist. The store appearance is pretty messy, the same as most TJ Maxx stores, but excellent deals can be scored at this particular location. read more

I came into the store yesterday to do some last-minute Christmas shopping. Being the fact that I work far from home, I did come into the store at a later time with my dog (around 9:15PM). Even though everything was neatly organized, I have to say that the customer service in there was terrible. Being someone that has had at least 17 years of experience managing in retail, I have never felt so targeted instead of being asked if I needed help with anything which I actually needed. instead of the five women that were circling me and staring me down, assuming that I was shoplifting; no one asked me if I needed any assistance,It wasn't till I went into the home section and having a security guard tried to casually come up to me and talk to me, which I know is a LP tactic to make sure I wasn't stealing(once again 17years in retail will have you understand all the tactics used to avoid shoplifting), I opened up my bag to show him that I had nothing to hide and that I was actually very disappointed at the fact that I was followed around the store not to even be asked if I needed help except him, but to assume that I was shoplifting. Coming from someone that has never had to shoplift a day in her life, nor has the desire to, I will think twice in shopping at this location again. Especially being a Latin woman shopping in a store with 12 other women that were Caucasian. I didn't even want to bother circling around again because I already knew that I was going to have a conga line of sales women making sure I wasn't stealing instead of actually helping me out. So I took my two items checked out and walked out. The holidays are already stressful as it is but to be the only one targeted at the store when 12 other people were in there is repulsive and looks terrible on management and LP's end.Look closer at your cameras and don't target people because of the way they look read more

Corporate - please do something about this.... There are way too many people shopping in this store. The lines inside the store to pay are way too long. Regardless of whatever # was determined to be the right # of people, when the line to pay is wrapped all around handbags, past the escalators, to the clothing section - its time to stop letting people in the store OR hire more workers at the registers OR give people shopping time slots. Many of the customers on the line to pay were using their masks as chin guards while they waited - making the entire process of waiting on line to pay uncomfortable. I went twice last week and left twice without purchasing what I wanted because of this. read more

I don't have lots of love for TJ Max. I just don't do well in these stores. We were in the neighborhood for a kid's bday party and needed to kill some time, so we ventured down into the cavern that is TJ Max. The store was unbearably hot, which isn't totally their fault. It is February and the heat should be on. Not their fault that it is 60 degrees outside... The clothing selection is skimpy, the shoe selection is light, the beauty selection has brands that I (beauty aficionado extraordinaire) never heard of, the housewares area was a mess and the men's department was lackluster. I wanted to buy a rug that was missing its tag. The associate brought over a rug of the same brand that was double the size and likely twice the price. She thought that was a fair comparison. When I asked if there was a way they could check inventory to confirm the item the associate laughed at me and said that's not her department. Great service. read more

It's a TJ Maxx, pretty much like every other one out there. One thing I despise about this branch in particular is that it feels like they are located in a catacomb. It's like 200 feet underground, so I actually get really claustrophobic if I spend too much time walking around. However, as with any other TJ Maxx out there, you can get a decent deal here if you don't mind spending a few hours digging through all of their stock. I like browsing TJ Maxx, but this one was slightly lacking. I was really looking for household goods this time around, and I found their selection to be missing several items that I had found in other TJ Maxx locations. Well, I guess across the street is Home Goods, which is basically the housewares section for TJ Maxx. I did pick up a paper towel holder for $10, as well as a cute Lilly-Pulitzer-esque apron for $13. They have designer items (7 for all mankind, Tahari, Nanette Lepore, etc.) but I don't find the prices that cheap - usually like $90 for the designer jeans, $100 for jackets, etc. There are restrooms here in the back, which is nice. This TJ Maxx is located a few steps away from the 96th street subway station, which is great! read more

This location has one of the best selections of dresses and "Runway" items in the city. I generally visit TJMaxx seeking good deals on higher end designer business casual clothes for work. A disappointing many of the NYC stores lack the range and carry almost exclusively lower end ($39.99 range) and a paltry overall selection of dresses. This location actually has a better dress selection than even the 18th Street store, which I consider to be the flagship. The dressing room was a bit like a maze; you had to turn corners constantly and there was nowhere to walk straight, but each section had a multi-angle mirror at the end. Although I wasn't really looking at luggage, I couldn't help but notice that it was stationed all over the store. The pajamas section left something to be desired. The home goods section was surprisingly robust considering the Home Goods store located directly across the store. The hand carts have seen better days though, and I tried out a half-dozen in two different parts of the store before I gave up and schlepped everything in my arms. read more

This location is my favorite location in the city because you can really find some luxury designer items here! Like all stores, it can be hit or miss but some visits can really be worth it. The line can get really long but don't fret, it moves quickly. Because it's in the basement, you won't have signal here. Then, I called the store manager to report my complaint. I wasn't surprised at all that she was just like the rest of her staffs. Both managers need to be disciplined too for encouraging this type of behavior! For anyone wondering about the condition of the home decor section in this particular TJ Maxx - I will tell ya - It's actually pretty decent. Despite the fact that there is a Home Goods across the street. However if you are out and about and specifically looking for a new lamp or a couple pillows for the couch then I'd stick with Home Goods. While TJ had a few aisles full of goods it was put together so haphazard I didn't really want to spend any time there. Unfortunately I didn't spend much more time in the store, but the place was bigger than I thought it would be. I was just shopping at this location and saw a bed bug on the racks. I stood there to keep an eye on it and tried to get an employee to help but she actually responded by saying, "I don't work in that section" and walked away! I then took a picture of it but no one in the store was willing to come up to it to help. The bed bug ended up escaping and I brought the picture to the manager who told me it was just a beetle. I'm fairly certain it's NOT just a beetle but they kept trying to shush me. I hope TJ Maxx and this location in particular does something ASAP because this could affect many shoppers. Plus you never know what you may come across that you didn't know that you were looking for until you come upon it. Always good for a look around when you pass by the store. Not to mention what you may fine simply while you are waiting in line to pay. Impulse buys are aplenty here. Just wish they have more for jewelry for men. "Columbus Square" already creeps me out. (That's right. It's called Columbus Square.) It looks like an ultra-modern suburban development that got ransacked by a hurricane and never recovered. As if that weren't enough, as I enter the TJ Maxx I realize that the store isn't even on ground level, but rather a nauseatingly long escalator ride into the ear-canal-popping pits of Manhattan's underbelly. Being greeted at the bottom by YET ANOTHER escalator down did little for my stomach. This was obviously followed by last year's merchandise, at pre-inflation prices, organized by what must have been an underpaid stoner with ADHD. The first thing I noticed was 4 or 5 burly black guys ogling the knitted collared shirts. I decided to let them have their pick and proceed to the other departments. Basically, the layout sucks. The selection is haphazard. They have cool shit, just not in your size. Unless you're a size 46 waist -- then they have lots. Frankly, though, you shouldn't have a size 46 waist. They do have name brands, so if you need that Polo or Penguin insignia, they're there. I just found the items to be on the lowest level of quality. I did, however, find a nice pair of cheap quasi-slacks and an awesome belt, so it's not all bad. The dress shirts seemed promising as well, but I couldn't remember my shirt size at the time I was there and there certainly aren't any clerks roaming the store who will help you address the issue. All in all, if you're a bargain shopper and in the area, it deserves a peek. Just don't EXPECT to find what you're looking for. read more

I've been to this store a couple of times, it's always messy and half the makeup is cracked, used and dirty. Today I opened up a lipstick to make sure it wasn't used and an employee grabbed my arm and told me I wasn't allowed to open the makeup. It's one thing to say u can't open them and one thing to touch me and speak with a disrespectful tone. This was an employee who had on glasses in the cosmetic section. I another employee with blonde hair chimed in with the same disrespectful tone and almost outright argued with me. Well needless to say I left everything in my cart and left ASAP. Example: I was just shopping at DSW the other day looking for some nice black heals for a wedding. Found some Nine Wests for $60. Not wanting to spend that much, I decided to head over to TJ Maxx, hearing it had opened recently. Looking, looking, looking...BINGO. Not only did I find some black heals, I found the exact same black heals I had found at DSW for HALF THE PRICE! I'm excited to head back and prowl through their Christmas decor -- cheap cheap cheap way to make your overpriced apartment look great for the holidays, without further breaking the bank. Staff was either slightly friendly or slightly rude. I think the service could improve a bit. Especially since you guys JUST OPENED. They have plenty of clothes, homewares, travel goods, etc. Look, it felt a little run down, sure. Yess, the cheaper, better organized cousin on Marshall's has come to my neighborhood. As others have mentioned, there is no cell phone service down here so it's a strangely quiet shopping experience. It's big enough for NY but not as big as the others I've seen, so I was able to browse through most of the clearance aisles (mama only shops in the clearance aisle) in one weekday night. Clothing was pretty well-organized size-wise, but I don't think I got anything that was a complete steal. I was mostly looking for work out clothes, and some of the stuff wasn't that much marked down from regular price. The fitting rooms are very nice and new, but no one was at the table when I rolled up so I just took my 8 pieces + cart and all into a room. I only looked at the clothing section, but when I was in line I saw an adorable porcelain cat's bowl with fish and a cat chef that I ended up buying for $4... I think that might have been the highlight of my shopping experience. (Other purchases were a Adidas short sleeve work out shirt for $15 [i might be returning that], a long sleeve New Balance work out shirt for $5 [it was kind of dusty], and a grey hoodie sweater for $10.) read more

I just want to update and give this TJMaxx an extra star. Recently, it seems like there has been a big improvement (over my review below). There are more registers open, the checkout line is kept moving and the employees are polite and professional, rather than socializing with each other (and ignoring the customers). This neighborhood desperately needed some clothing stores, but this particular TJ Maxx location didn't quite fill my type of void because I'm used to bigger TJ Maxxes with vast selections. However, there are a few jewels to be found once in a while, such as a crisp Cole Haan trench in camel and black in size xs- which you know will be snapped up by someone else if you're not fast enough to draw your gun. I always go to these discount stores because the shoe section has optons for women with size 5 feet. So easy to just scan your eyes and pick out a pair to try on! One day, I was tempted to buy a pair of Stuart Weitzman gold slingbacks ($198) but my toes looked too funny in them-- something I'd overlook if the shoes were more deeply discounted. hehe read more
