i was really surprised to find such a great indie bookshop in anchorage (not sure why i was so surprised). i ended up doing just about all of my "hi, i got you this _______ (fill in the blank kitschy souviner) from alaska" shopping here. the staff seemed very knowledgeable. i bought my mom something rather large, and opted to have it shipped instead of hauling it back to california myself and shipping it from home. their shipping rates were VERY reasonable, which was a welcomed surprise (so many shops rip their patrons off with higher than normal shipping rates). if i ever find myself in anchorage again (and i hope i do), title wave will be a necessary stop on my itinerary. read more

These five stars are for Alaskan book hunters. As Alaska goes, this is the best place in the state to find a huge constantly refreshed stock of used books. I collect modern first editions and other hard to find books. I visit Title Wave Books about once a week to get a cup of coffee from Kaladi Bros and just browse every aisle for a good hour or so. It's like meditation for me. Many of the other reviews will complain about the new focus on just used books, but I love the new layout and concentration. I was tired of all that kitchy knick knacks everywhere. Books is what Title Wave does best and they are sticking to what they know. Let B & N, Borders, and Costco pay the shipping for all the new books. I'll buy the used copy for half the price when it comes into Title Wave. The staff are helpful and work hard. They are always willing to help me find obscure authors or subjects. The store is committed to the Anchorage community and brings in local authors for readings and signings. They support local book clubs, chess groups, origami nights, and many other activities. They buy used books for cash or trade, so your always going to find something new. If you are looking for a specific brand new book, you may find it faster at the corporate stores. You never know what other treasure you may find if you come to Title Wave first. read more

Title Wave bookstore is a great place to browse for books new or used. They hire the best people and I love the recommendations shelf by the employees. It's fun to see what other people like to read. It's a well organized place. You can sell your books to them for a credit. Recently, they changed the look of the place by adding a large counter where the arts and crafts books used to be. I'm not sure why, most likely they needed the space but I don't care for it. The Feng Shui of the place has been obstructed. I'm hoping they come up with a new design for the place. I'd like to suggest they contact HDTV and get a design team to come up with a more friendly, welcoming front of the store. read more

Great book store that I have been going to for years. Good selection & staff very helpful. Always able to find a book or audio book to take home. I use their buy back program & love it that if you get enough credit, you get books free using store credit. You need to know that they use books in excellent condition for buy back. Then we get to read them, gently, & return for credit. Usually do not buy hard backs unless Alaskana or new. When book comes out in paper back usually will not take unless you want to donate them to good causes in town. I esp. like the new books for $9.99 & can use store credit & return them for credit. As paperbacks come out the new hard back sell for $3.99 & can use store credit but won't take back them. So books get a long life at Tital Wave., Paper backs get reduced too as they age out. So always something reasonable to get. Also carry music CD's, DVD's, cards & etc. Well worth the trip. read more

I love this place but some of the changes bother me. I hate that they no longer donate books they reject and that they do not recycle them, just throw them away. The state it is too expensive for them to donate and recycle. I think it would be nice of the mall to help with the recycle fees, it is good for their tenants, the community, and the environment. read more

Loads of books, good coffee shop next door, and kitschy "stuff" to browse and buy. I enjoyed their education titles, which included a mix of used and new. The interspersing was fine with me...I don't personally care if it's new or used. I'm not really one to sell back books, though....I should. I'm not sure if they pay a fair amount, as Penny R. commented she didn't think they did. However, they are a business and I am sure if I were in a used book store market, I'd be wary of buying back stuff from people that wasn't resellable. Just discovered this little knook of books today and I have to say it is absolutely a wonderful reading experience. They have the best selection of Alaskan books. The collection is literally endless. I want to just sit in the store all day drifting through the countless titles and authors. No matter what subject you're looking for you'll find the exact book you want. Best place to buy books in Anchorage. If you are looking for a specific book, it is a good idea to call first, as it is a used book store; if you are just in the market for a good book, spend some time wandering/browsing and you will be rewarded. I just moved to Anchorage and am so glad a friend told me about this place. They have a variety of selections for a good price. I could get lost in here for hours. Improved Stock Over the last couple of years, Title Wave has really improved its inventory and stock. It has gone from a decent used book store to an excellent used book store. I still miss the gifts, probably because I have about $250 in trade, but the change in business model is clearly working. read more

Terrible! The store itself is very nice and the people at the check out counter were also very good. If this review was about that side of things it would be 4 or 5 stars. However, it's not. I brought some old books in for store credit and they do not accept most of what I brought in. Totally understandable as most of them were old romance novels from 20 years ago or more. What was not understandable was Tim's combative attitude and rudeness when I asked if someone could help me back out to my car with the box of rejected books. I have a bad right shoulder with very limited mobility in it. When I brought the books in I fell hard in the parking lot, a combination of trying to carry the box one handed and several inches of compact ice and snow in the unmaintained parking lot. I told Tim this, but his response consisted of " I don't think we should have to help you back out to your car just because we won't take your books." He continually ignored the issue of my bad shoulder and acted like I was just being difficult because they didn't want my out of date books. I left there feeling horrible and will never go back again. read more

One of the better used bookstores I've seen not only in Anchorage, but really anywhere in the country. Often you will find more than one copy of a major book title, so you can sometimes select whether you want hardcopy or paperback. Plenty of places to sit. Great Store, Great Staff. Easy transactions from pre-owned books and dvds to store credit. Love the atmosphere and the quick service. I have taken my family to this store, almost weekly, since we moved to Alaska 8 years ago. There is something for everyone here. Books, CDs, DVDs, and my sons new obsession, vintage vinyl. I never have to look far for customer service as the staff is available on the sales floor seemingly all the time. I particularly enjoy the Information Service Station where I babble on about "a blue book with that thingy on the cover that so and so had on their favorite book list" and the knowledgeable staff finds it for me. I enjoy bringing my lower 48 relatives and friends here so they get a true taste of Alaska. The store is located conveniently in Midtown and close to other fun shops and restaurants. One can make a whole day of a trip to the bookstore and its surroundings! read more

A very large selection of books, DVDs and music. The staff is very friendly. My only negative is the amount of money they give for books you bring for store credit. It seems like the amount per book in credit has gone down over the years. I've gotten to the point where I don't bother bringing in books for credit unless I absolutely hate the book. I LOVE TITLE WAVE!!!!! I have been a fan since moving to Anchorage, AK in 2002. They are organized, have pretty much any book you are looking for, and have FABULOUS and UNIQUE gifts. I recently started using their trade system. This is the only reason I didn't give the rating a 5. The staff that work in that area are quite rude. They talk personal while dealing with you. They don't explain how the trade system works, and they are slow in getting the trade amount back to you. I don't feel that the money trade is worth it. I recently turned in 15 books and got $7 in trade in. Not too good if you ask me. BUT, all the other staff there are helpful and friendly. They have a music section that ROCKS! If you have an older album you're looking for, I would bet you'd find it there. They now carry DVD's. The CD's and DVD's are priced reasonably. They also carry sheet music, which my son and daughter LOVE. My daughter is in her 1st year of playing flute and found sheet music for the flute that is at her level. The children's section is excellent. LOTS of selections.... This is a great book and music store. read more

My favorite store to visit whenever I was in town from Kodiak! I'd grab a book find a chair and spend a couple of hours hanging out while the family ran errands. Now that I'm living here in Anchorage I'm looking forward to more opportunities to visit. read more

I have never found what I am looking for nor does the staff help to find it for you. The other day my husband and I brought in each two loads of books for credit. I was first told how to "properly" fill the bin then told they wouldn't accept anything and instead would donate it. However, the same person took down my husbands account information for books that came from the same source. Very frustrated. Will stick with Barnes and Nobles. read more

This is THE place to go, for books, gifts, you name it.... they'll even take your used books in trade. Our whole family can spend an entire afternoon here. Their kids section is awesome, their gifts are the best and trendiest in Anchorage (I'm told the buyer travels a lot), and I love the staff book selections---you can tell these folks read! Good for used DVD's too, and we bought (actually traded) an audiobook for the long drive to Fairbanks last summer. I agree with and am amused by Betty C.'s review. As much as I would like to support local business, Title Wave just doesn't earn it. The customer service is average, nothing special but not terrible. The amount charged for used books is ridiculous, especially considering the piddly amount they offer to buy used books from their customers. So many other cities have great used bookstores; it would be wonderful if Anchorage had such a store to give Title Wave a run for their money. read more

I used to love this store. I was the first place I went when looking for a book. However about 2 years ago they stopped buying 99% of the books I brought in (and they were in good condition.) I asked about it finally and was told that they had a warehouse full of books and beside my books were "old" meaning they were published over a couple years ago. Well that was the whole beauty of the place. I could find ON THE SHELF older volumes and authors who were retired or even dead. I don't read much modern stuff because few current authors write what I like. Then the last time I went in and I couldn't find the books I was looking for, I went to the counter order a book and was told they don't do that anymore. That left me only Barnes & Noble as a source and when I went there I was told they couldn't order the books I wanted I would have to go to Amazon. I DON"T shop online and I don't use a credit card, so I'm up a creek without a paddle in terms of buying the books I want. So disappointed. I haven't been there since, and see no point to do so. They seem to be becoming a new & current bookstore only. read more
