And of course, lots of books for adults, children and teens with quiet places to sit and read. The facility got its start from a Carnegie grant totally $22,500. The original limestone building opened in 1906. Today, some of the original Carnegie stairway, scrollwork and leaded glass windows can be seen in the Children's area. In 1988, a significant expansion added square feet, improved accessibility and modernized the former library. Each section of the library is named for a benefactor that provided funding. There's a sense of community pride throughout the facility. I took my granddaughter and she spent an hour playing and exploring in the children's area. The staff even provided take home project kits for her. She also bought a book in their resale shop. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. There is free street parking in front of the building. Worth a visit if you like libraries and architecture.

The stroll across the Wabash is not that difficult and the bridge easily accommodates a large number of people. Festivals are held here. As part of the revitalization, a new multi-purpose building is going up next to the plaza which will provide a large patio area overlooking the plaza and bridge. Across 2nd Street is the "Gateway" (see separate review). On the bridge, the "Millenium Sundial" was created in 1999 by artist David Aho. It stands nearly 8 feet tall on a 4 feet square base. The sculpture is on the Lafayette side of the bridge close to the south railing. Although it may have been moved during construction, there was also a memorial sculpture east of the bridge along the upper area of the plaza. The memorial sculpture is called "World Split Assunder" by local artist Mark Parmenter. It was dedicated on Sept 11th, 2003 on the second anniversary of the tragic terrorist attack. The sculpture shows the twin towers with the Pentagon turned on its side to look like a rising star. The towers and Pentagon are made of aluminum. The base of the sculpture is made of limestone and includes a globe that has been split in half with the halves located on each side of the towers. The overall height of the installation is 12 feet. I misplaced my license and dropped by on a Saturday morning right after they opened. All the…read morestations were full, but my number was called quickly. I had my social security card with me and a picture of my license on my phone, so the process was very quick. I was in and out in 15 minutes, not the hour or so I was expecting. There are also self service kiosks in the foyer available 24-7 for registration and license renewals, MVR requests, and other simple transactions. Going to the license branch is no longer a painful experience!

Almost hidden in the little town of Williamsport is an amazing geological feature millions of years…read morein the making. The Williamsport Falls at 90 feet high is the longest falls in Indiana. We knew it was there somewhere, but Eric at the Hot Dog Station said it's right out back and sure enough, there it was. There is a small parking area and maps of hiking trails where you can walk along the creek, descend and watch the waterfall. You can observe the top of the falls right from the parking lot. There was no water flowing due to lack of rain during our visit, but you could see amazing crevasses created by water rushing over the falls. For a small observation deck, you can see the shear drop of the falls. The fall foliage was just starting to change making the view spectacular. There is no charge to enter the park, which is dog friendly. There are several trails.

I've been visiting West Lafayette for many years but never noticed this magnificent fountain until…read moremy visit to the Courthouse in September. The fountain is amazing - my first thought was just "wow". The fountain was designed by Laredo Taft in 1887. The statue honors General Lafayette, the city namesake. His figure stands majestically over the pool below. Panels around the base also honor John Purdue (namesake of Purdue University), an artesian well beneath the fountain, early pioneers of the city, Union solders who fought in the Civil War, and William Digby (founder of Lafayette). The fountain is surrounded by beautiful landscaping. Local business workers sat around the fountain eating lunch or reading in the serene setting and the sounds of the fountain water. There is free street parking about a block away. The fountain and Courthouse are definitely worth a visit.

Famous American sculptor Lorado Taft from Illinois was selected to create the magnificent fountain…read moreon the northeast corner of the Tippecanoe County Courthouse. In 1887, the piece was erected on the site and appears to have undergone some TLC along with the courthouse. The main figure atop the fountain is that of the Marquis de Lafayette who was instrumental in helping the inexperienced and underfunded American military during the Revolutionary War. Below that life sized figure, there are four oval reliefs and below that, an octagonal shape with each of the sides bearing an ornate framing around the names of honorees with ties to the city. Honorees are quite varied and include pioneers, soldiers, John Purdue, and William Digby, the town founder. Earlier versions of the courthouse are also honored. Although the honorees may be somewhat random, the overall beauty of the work is fantastic. Review #1410

We've been to a few other FLW properties but no other has been as welcoming. We were encouraged to truly look and see the genius of the design as it was intended. We could stand and sit to get the full effect of each space. We were able to experience first hand the flexibility and convertability of the furniture that adds the final touch to each space. The ingenious additions Mrs. Christian requested that were beautifully designed into the workspace were well before their time.
