I misplaced my license and dropped by on a Saturday morning right after they opened. All the stations were full, but my number was called quickly. I had my social security card with me and a picture of my license on my phone, so the process was very quick. I was in and out in 15 minutes, not the hour or so I was expecting. There are also self service kiosks in the foyer available 24-7 for registration and license renewals, MVR requests, and other simple transactions. I did make an early a.m. Appt. I worked with a lady named Chris. She was efficient, knowledgeable, helpful and kind. I never had a BMV experience like this one in Lafayette. I visited the Lafayette BMV on a Thursday at 3:30PM.** There are 24-Hour kiosks available when you first enter the foyer where a security guard is. Inside, there were approximately 20 non-employees in the building (maybe 7 people being helped and 13 people waiting to be called). It moved along very quickly. My visit was to get a New Resident Driver's License and update my vehicle Registration. This can not be done at a kiosk; you need to go to a window inside. Once you walk through the foyer and second set of double doors, you will immediately see a kiosk in front of you. Touch the screen and take a number here. [To be safe, take TWO numbers! My original number was 304 and before I sat down they were calling for 295. Then I noticed the numbers they called out were jumping - 298, 302, 305... They skipped my number! I quickly grabbed a second number; I was now 313. And I got called up in less than five minutes.] When I arrived at the window, Rhonda was very friendly and helpful. [She told me I could've gone up to any window to let them know my number was skipped.] My visit took longer than the average visit because I had a lot to take care of. Not only am I a new resident and registering my car, I also recently changed my name. So there were extra documents that needed to be verified. After all the documents were verified, I did a quick eye exam then had my photo taken. After that, I signed my name on a digital screen. Being that my name was recently changed, Rhonda was very patient and let me resign my new married name multiple times until it looked right. I went home with my temporary registration (paper license plate) and a paper interim drivers license (with photo). I was told I would receive my new license and plates in the mail in about two weeks. My total time in the building was one hour. However, it felt very quick since there was very little waiting around. **I actually arrived at the Market Square Center at 3:00PM, but iPhone Maps took me to the wrong side of the Center. After walking through the Center, I found the old location with a flyer posted on the door stating the location has moved. Unfortunately, the orientation of map and arrows on the flyer made it appear the new BMV location was East, toward Greenbush St and Elmwood Ave. However, it is West, closer to Erie St. I saw a lot of people walking around the shopping center whom I suspected were also looking for the BMV. Sure enough, when I found the BMV, those same people were inside. The only downsides to my visit were: 1) it was difficult to find the new location. And 2) not until I got home did I notice a typo - Rhonda made me 40 lbs heavier! LOL Considering how quick and easy it was, I might just go back tomorrow to have it corrected. read more

I have never been fed more disinformation at a gov't agency than I experienced this past week. I recently purchased a new car, and went to the Elmwood BMV in Lafayette (since they regrettably closed the West Lafayette branch - sending thousands of Purdue Students there as well). My tasks were straightforward: Transfer my existing personalized plate to my new car, file the paperwork for the new car title, and get a new standard plate for my current car. Round 1: The clerk told me I could not transfer my personalized plate to the new car-- patently untrue. Then , after having to get a supervisor over, and resolving the first request (and after the supervisor left the general vicinity) I was told by the same clerk that I would forfeit the year of registration still left on the personalized plate when I transferred it. Again, patently false. Yet again, a supervisor was asked to intervene, and I was informed that that statement was also not true. Unbelievable!! Round 2: The intervening supervisor (wisely) decided that she would handle the rest of the tasks that I had left. According to IN BMV rules, when a personalized plate is transferred to a new vehicle, the entire original cost of the personalized plate must yet again be paid in order to transfer the plate to the new car. At the same time, she asked me if I wanted to pay for the registration for a second year. I agreed since that allows me to deduct the (excessive) excise tax and hybrid vehicle fee ( since I don't use anywhere near as much gas as a traditional car, IN makes up for the lost taxes by charging the additional fee) Since I had to pay the personalized plate fee again, and I would now have the registration renewing in 2025, I asked for a new plate with 2025 on it (my current one has 2024) ; but the BMV would not issue one since it would be a duplicate plate. What remains to be seen is whether I will actually receive the renewal sticker for 2025 before the registration expires next year. Wagers, any one? As bad as the West Lafayette branch was, at least they were knowledgeable in about 50% of the cases; unfortunately the only remaining branch for our area doesn't quite make it to the 25% mark. Advice-- try to do whatever you have to do online or on the 24 hr kiosks when you can and only go into the "bullpen" as a very last resort. And, I agree with a previous comment. They need a PA system (like I believe they had in West Lafayette) and when they "call your number" also state "We can help you at Workstation NN., that way you don't have to look around the circumference of a 75' x 75' room to see from what workstation the clerks are calling your number. I didn't happen to see a "Now Serving # x" sign that updates with each person being served. They had one at the branch they closed in West Lafayette. At least there you had some idea of where you were in line. What an absolute nightmare! With a 6 billion IN State budget surplus, you would think something as critical as the BMV would not be so retrograde! Only in Indiana ! read more

Arrived around 10:30am Friday, Dec 15. Was called as soon as my number printed. No one waiting. I just needed to pay taxes and transfer my plate for a new car. I had all my paperwork from the dealership with insurance info and my current driver's license. It took maybe 15/20 minutes. Bill was pleasant and knowledgeable. I had no issues. The often tense necessity of taking on the roads but this place is one of the better BMVs I've been to. Often a wait after 5 so don't expect speed when everyone else is doing BMW stuff too. I haven't had any negative issues with the people behind the desks here like others seem to. I bet the slow and frustrating bias coming into the BMW helps some people live those issues better than others. I'm sure glad my job doesn't involve the repetative legalities of road users so keeping a patient and positive face will help the staff and give a good chance for a better experience. read more

I have had my share of bad experiences with the Lafayette BMV but I am here to tell you that today's experience was very nice. I was first greeted as I walked in the door by a lady who was going to assist me and let me know whether I should use the kiosk or whether I needed to go inside. After she ascertained that I needed to go inside my wait was short and Jim was my customer service associate. He was pleasant and quickly processed my paperwork and got me out the door. So I wanted to put a review out there that told about my positive experience and we will see how future experiences go. read more

Went on a Saturday "walk-in" morning and Bryce was very helpful and really quick...a couple registration tasks. Wait time was about 15-20 minutes (pulled #75 on the waitlist while they were handling #35) as the other representatives seemed to keep the line moving fast. Great experience! I don't miss much about living in Chicago but one of the things I do miss is their license branches which were well run, friendly and efficient. Indiana, on the other hand, can absolutely S a D when it comes to this particular government entity. I have had so many terrible experiences at various branches around Lafayette. One involving me having to get my license replaced after losing it and the BMV not mailing it to me in time, then mailing it to the incorrect address which resulted in me not having a license for four months as I was in another state for a job over the summer and then them trying recharge me for the license that they lost twice. I had to go to the state level to get that resolved. My most recent experience involved having to stand outside in 12 degree weather because the branch was "too busy" to have people wait inside while standing. Wasn't even allowed to stand in between the inner and outer doors. Because Covid or something. Ridiculous. On top of that, it apparently has never occurred to anyone in the history of the Lafayette/West Lafayette BMV to have an employee ASKING customers what they are there for WHEN THEY COME IN and making sure they have all of the correct documents BEFORE they wait for an hour only to be told they have to come back after they've gotten x, y and z. And they wonder why patrons of the BMV want to rip out the eyeballs of the employees when they finally get to speak to one face to face. Not to mention many of the employees are rude and dismissive and talk to you as if you're stupid because "What? You didn't know that a letter from the IRS with your social security number printed on it wasn't sufficient proof of your social security number? You didn't know you needed to mail off this specific form before coming in here?" And then they look at you as if you're an inconvenience to them. I'd like to know how many BMV employees end up offing themselves due to all of the visitors they get who absolutely fucking hate their guts. It's gotta be a significant number. I would have given a 0 if possible. I rescheduled clients to get a handicap sticker for my daughter who just had foot surgery. The physician complete the form completely. He purposefully left the expiration date blank because the form said it expired either the date written OR in one year whichever occurs first. I had to take the rest of the day off and go back to the physician's office to complete another form. He was pulled from patients. Then, I had to wait another hour. I went to the Frankfort branch and they said that Lafayette was looking at my info wrong because it listed my co-signer as the first person they just needed to click a box to see my name. I wish I could give it zero stars! They close at 630pm. I got here at 533pm and they told me I had to be here an hour before it closes to take my driving test. I told them I walked 2 miles to get here after work. I walked as fast as I could. The only response I got was "ok". They don't care about you at all. I am from New Jersey and I am just looking to get my license here. I have never dealt with such poor customer service in my lifetime! read more
