Douglas Park

This is a small pocket park near the Melbourne Causeway when you cross over into Indialantic. The…read moretown's name is actually Indialantic-By-The-Sea because it lies between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. Interesting fact, this town is only one mile! This beautifully landscaped park is only a little over an acre. There is small parking lot, water fountain, informational signs, a gazebo, and benches. This is a very nice park to relax and take in the scenic water view of the Indian River. What is most important about this park is taking place out of view, in the river. This park is one of three sites in Brevard County that are part of the Living Shoreline program. The project was funded by the State of Florida, Department of Economic Opportunity, and other local community sponsors. Mangroves, native plants, oyster mats/bags, redeemed seawall, and rip-rap were added off the shore. At this park an oyster bag revetment was added to shoreline. A revetment is an impact-resistant material applied to a bank or wall in order to absorb the energy of incoming water and protect it from erosion. Mangroves were another important addition for the ecosystem. They offer shoreline protection, improve water quality by filtering out pollutants, and they offer shelter for juvenile marine life. There is a sign next to the shoreline in the park explaining the project. Also in this park is a memorial to its namesake, Gilbert W. Douglas who served as mayor from 1961-1967. The plaque is attached to a rock next to the flagpole. He must have done a great job to have such a lovely park named in his honor.

Audubon Park

A tiny but adorable park in the middle of Audubon. Well there may not be much space for this park,…read moreit does have a quiet and peaceful air about it. They have a bench and a few small bird houses to look at. It really is just a place to sit quietly and enjoy the weather when it's nice. Overall: A- Although it's small it does offer a peaceful stop off during a walk or just for a little bit of quiet time when you might need a break.

4 Stars for a barely-there park that brings joy in a few cute ways, but only really worth visiting…read moreif you live within a block or two. I have to give this little tiny plot of land some props. I don't know how it got designated an official park but it has a sign and everything! It is about the size of an oddly-shaped 1/4 acre lot. It's situated on a corner lot between homes and boasts on big and impressive osk. The thing that takes it from a 2-3 star to a 4 for me is the cute little extras. It has a brightly colored blue and yellow bench right in front of the big tree, as well as a funky sign that looks like an old traffic light. By the edge there are some smaller trees with bird houses that are custom built and named after prominent little eateries and businesses in the neighborhood. Each one is decorated themed to that business. It's really sweet and shows that someone (or a few neighbors) really love this little space. And that makes me love it a bit more too. Again, not a space to drive to (there's not a lot to it), but really cute little pocket park right in the middle of a neighborhood. Blink, and you'll miss it!

Greenwood Urban Wetlands is a 19 acre nature park in Orlando. It lies on the west side of Greenwood…read moreCemetery which was established in 1880 and is where many of Orlando's notables and pioneers lie at rest. The wetlands were created in 1991 between the Lake Davis and Lake Como neighborhoods as a stormwater treatment facility to handle the water run off. While the main purpose of the park is to clean the reclaimed water, a welcome byproduct of that is that it attracts a lot of wildlife. Wetland parks are some of my favorite kind of parks because they attract a variety of wildlife including wading birds, migrating birds, lizards, turtles, and alligators. At the entrance to the park is a community garden and Little Library. My favorite part of the park is the 0.7-mile loop trail surrounding Lake Greenwood that takes approximately 13 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking and walking. Along the way you will pass cypress trees, cross two bridges, and see a variety of birds enjoying the lake. Animals that have been spotted here include blue jays, ducks, barn owls, and red wing blackbirds. During my visit I saw a Great Blue Heron and a Great Egret along with ducks. The scenery during my walk was stunning. I saw a number of people reading, playing with their kids, and exercising. This is an ideal place to practice your photography, bird, watch, and have a picnic. This is such a wonderful natural resource for the city of Orlando and I loved my visit.
