We took the Waterloo train to Basingstoke and from there the 76 bus to Whitchurch. The connections were very easy and located close to each other. Both the train and the bus ran frequently. The bus let us off downtown Whitchurch and we walked to the cottage. There is a train stop in Whitchurch, but is a distance from the center of town and I always worry that luggage wheels won't survive the uneven paving. Th cottage is located right on site of the Silk Mill. It is the only one. The cottage was very comfortable with two bedrooms upstairs and a kitchen, dining room, bathroom, and sitting room downstairs. The room with the twin beds had a safety gate for children. There is a patio off the kitchen. The Hosts left us milk, cake, cookies, tea and coffee makings, and oil to cook with. We were there during a heat wave and we had fans to use in the bedrooms (the windows don't open). The downstairs stayed cool. There were 3 small grocery stores to purchase food. We didn't find the restaurants all that great. None of them served breakfast. We took the 76 bus (runs every 1/2 hour) to the Bombay Sapphire Gin distillery for a great tour. (Be sure to book In advance.) There is an onsite café. The area is beautiful, and there are several easy walking trails from the cottage. The Silk Mill next door is open everyday except Monday. The hotel itself is lovely; a boutique set-up with dark wood floors and lavish Indian-inspired decor. We checked in and dropped our things in the room, which for £100 (for bed & breakfast) was huge. Very nice indeed. The four-poster bed was crazy comfy, which surprised me as I don't usually like soft mattresses. The bathroom had one those water-fall style power showers, which was divine. It was obvious that the Manager of the hotel had spent a lot of time and care making our friends' day so special. The champagne reception in the garden was beautiful (aided by very good weather), the food was seriously good (always a risk at weddings) - and the subsequent evening went off without a hitch. I can thoroughly recommend this for a special occasion or a wedding, great for a party. Loads of space, sectioned off so you can hire out the entire venue or just rooms. Try it for a peaceful weekend away too, they do special rates on the website all the time.

The new owners have spent a significant amount of money renovating the place and it's really rather impressive. The downstairs bar/pub is a relaxing place for a drink, although you'd probably choose another of the village's pubs if you're just after a drink. But the food they serve is fantastic. Even better if it's a nice day and you can sit out in the hidden, but huge, garden at the back. The garden has plenty of tables and chairs and even some ornate shelters with cushions and benches. I'll be back in September to spend the night after a wedding so I can better appraise the rooms then. But I'm told they're very, very good.

Or maybe we're just getting old. Perfect setting for a perfect wedding!

Four stars for food, three for room. The dinner was quite excellent! We enjoyed two different draft ales. The best dish was the outstanding caramelized onion and goat cheese tart, served with a small salad of frisée and mixed greens. It didn't look like what I think of as a tart, it had pastry on the bottom, but it was baked in a larger square pan. We also enjoyed the flavorful and creamy butternut squash risotto. The scallops and black pudding received a very high rating. The portion was restrained, two scallops and two slices of pudding. The potato and leek soup was okay, very leeky. For pudding I had the strawberries and cream. That's exactly what it was fresh strawberries and plain cream. I admit I was expecting a bit of sugar, or perhaps a bit of a whip, but I decided to act healthy, and have my pudd unsweetened. We had the full breakfast the next morning. The eggs, back bacon, stewed tomate, etc were tasty. Skip the fried bread. I'd never seen fried bread on a menu for breakfast before. I asked the waitress about it, who encouraged me to try it. To an American taste it was not very nice. Basically a deep fried triangle of toast. The croissants were so-so, have the granary toast. As for the room, we had an attic room for a family with three beds. The price was reasonable, but I didn't love the room. I'd say ask for a room on a lower floor. You had to duck to use the bathroom sink, and the basin was teeny-tiny. Two of the beds were in the eaves, I pulled mine out, and my husband risked the head-bonk, but he seemed fine in the morning.

There is a nice heated outdoor patio area and beer garden at the side of the building and plenty of parking. This is very much a food pub, with most tables set for food a good fixed menu and a couple of Weekly Special starters, two mains and a Catch of the Day. Starters range from around £3-5 and mains £11-16. I chose a special off the starter menu: button mushrooms, garlic, white wine & cream sauce served on toasted Brioche; it came with a small side-salad and was good, not wonderful, but good. For the main I went for Medallions of Beef Fillet, char-grilled red wine mushrooms and pancetta sauce served with sauté potatoes, roasted Mediterranean vegetables. I received two thin slices of steak served with button mushrooms and what looked like bacon (not pancetta), sat on some soggy potatoes. The Mediterranean Vegetables reminded me of Ratatouille: courgette, carrot and others in a lightly peppered tomato sauce. Quite nice, but not what I would have described as 'roasted'. Overall I enjoyed the food, it was good, but I think it could have been very good, nearly 4* ranking, so somehow just a little disappointing. The hotel part is rather Motel style with several blocks of bedrooms, each with their own external door, scattered around the side and back of the hotel. The blocks looking in keeping with the rest of the building, so it looks nicer than it probably sounds. Meals are served back in the main building. Breakfast is the usual cereal, orange juice and a choice from the traditional English breakfast: bacon, egg, sausage, mushrooms, tomato and fried bread. Tea, coffee and toast round off the choice. It was all well cooked, tasty and served with a smile.

You can choose from a range of cooked breakfasts (including a full breakfast, eggs benedict), or help yourself to cereals and toast. They were going to demolish these and build some jungle themed replacements? Reception was easy and they looked after us well throughout our 2 weekend stays.
