High-Priced! Ostentatious! Skimpy Breakfast! Scrimped Hospitality! Shockingly Overrated!
My review is "exclusively" about our experience with this B&B's Innkeepers affability and hospitality, the breakfasts that were served at the Inn during our stay, and the owner, Sheran's interference with our reservation after we booked "a Suite" here last summer on Expedia's website. For a high price-tag of $850 for 2-nights, our stay here was incredibly disappointing to the extent that it has deterred us from going to any other B&B anytime soon.
After extensively researching Yosemite for best lodging options, we planned our entire 5-day Yosemite trip around the dates of finding availability at Tin Lizzie Inn. From the minute we arrived we were ambivalent about the hosts' cold and standoffish attitude and sensed their reluctance to serve us. We showed up at 3PM sharp with NO warm greetings and no one opened the Inn's front-entrance door. After 5-7 minute wait, the innkeeper Jeb who looked rather withdrawn came out of the back-door, pointed with a hand gesture showing where to park our car. There was NO help with our luggage and NO intro was given about the Inn, or of the Fish Camp area (which is not really a town). When asked about where to get dinner, the innkeeper casually said there's a book in the room with suggestions for dining. I desperately wanted to have some tea to help relieve my nausea due to the narrow, curvy drive. Feeling light-headed and not quite in a state to talk, I was befuddled to see that the innkeeper Jeb showed no proclivity to offer any help even after seeing me in a woozy state. Even a nearest pharmacy is miles away from out here in the boondocks. I started to retract in my mind thinking is this the same B&B that is so highly rated in every booking and reviews websites? Yes I do check multiple websites before booking.
In a high-priced, high-rated and sophisticated B&B, one would expect of an evening social wine-hour, or at least a late-afternoon high-tea. In fact what really lured us in picking this quaint, on-highway destination were those Inn's glorifying reviews with reference to those little extra touches and hosts going an extra mile..., the only reason why we ended up here and not in a hotel! It was hurtful to know that the hosts here are inconsistent in serving their guests by going according to their whim and fancy. I'm sure that we're not the only ones who got the short end of the stick but we certainly are the first to express our disappointment openly.
Host Jeb had emailed us sample itinerary mentioning popcorn and marshmallows by the fire-pit on both evenings of our stay. Turned out it was a fake offer! The manipulative and shrewd owner of this Inn Sheran just did herself a favor earning extra money by booking more guests at our expense, yet she clearly said in her email that "we'll have the perks nonetheless!"
With NO tea-hour offered there was also NO tea-maker/kettle in the room. Even though I didn't have any tea bags, I requested for a kettle. I couldn't believe my eyes the kind of kettle that was sent; a tiny and terribly worn-out, all plastic, old and cracked tea-kettle. I didn't even want to touch it as I didn't feel safe to plug it in. We decided to get out... and drove half-hour to Oakhurst to get an early dinner.
It was also a real challenge to find a decent dinner near Fish Camp. On second night, picking up dining recommendation from the Inn's suggestion book we ate at a restaurant across the highway from Tin Lizzie Inn. A big mistake! In the name of fine-dining it was real bad food.
Breakfasts at the Inn were more of a show, a formality. Skimpy portion-size with no options, it didn't feel like the first meal of the day for feeling full and nourishment. It was a huge disappointment especially if you're preparing to go on a hike. The first morning we were served just half-a-piece of French toast (only one triangle!). No eggs, meat, potatoes, fruit or anything else on the side, just half a piece of toast! I believe you're supposed to fill your appetite with eye-appeal, as they're heavy on presentation with glitzy china and place settings. The big bummer was when Jeb served only half-cup of lukewarm tea. They were stingy on hot beverage too. We felt we were begrudgingly served breakfast here. Moreover we had to hear from the hostess how difficult it is to do oven-baking at higher elevations with time and temperature adjustments. That's probably why there were no cookies for us upon our arrival.
We wanted our trip to end on a high note but our decision to stay here was a swing and a miss. My only shining lone-star of this review goes to a 10-minute Model-T ride for which we had to ask Jeb before check-out. After the ride, Carmen the hostess asked us to write a review about our stay and urged us to sign the guest-book, which I did expressing highly of the Inn since suddenly on the send-off day the status of their hospitality significantly improved from stone-cold to warmer. read more
