My wife and I just stumbled upon Tin Box after finding the Next Course closed nearby on a Thursday evening. The atmosphere was relaxed and seemed to be very American judging by the bartender and several wait staff. The restaurant sits on a hill in the woods so it was interesting to basically be tucked away. I ordered a pretty good pilsner on draft (surprisingly). It was a little warm but still tasted good. My wife ordered a margarita and said it was good. We started with a 6 piece Oyster sampler topped with caviar and cream cheese which were great though I still tend to appreciate oysters without any dressing. They ship in seasonal oysters from across the country including Massachusetts and Washington. I had the dry rubbed ribs for dinner which were okay. I definitely wouldn't say they were great but it was pretty good. Baked beans and fresh slaw were terrific. Wifey ordered an arugula salad which she enjoyed. I think the biggest knock on the menu was a lack of veggie options for her. We split a chocolate, bacon crème brulet for dessert which was great sans bacon. Just couldn't truly enjoy that. They also let us purchase a 6 pack of beer to take home since it was late and we wanted to grab a beer for late night. all in all, good find if you are looking for a relaxed vibe. read more

As I sit here, having waited 50 minutes for my food I can say a few things. 2/6 of us got our food 20 minutes ago. When the steak & eggs came, the eggs were RAW. I can't even say how much we loved this place. Fresh juice in the martini's and margaritas. Great recommendations by the servers as well. You can't beat a place that knows how to do both sushi as well as smoked meats. The bacon appetizer is really something bacon lovers should not miss. Sushi is fresh and very yummy! I recommend the paradise roll. A lot of times sushi places make you feel bad if you don't understand all the lingo of what goes into it. This place was not like that. We came here after a disappointing meal at "Next Course" down the road and boy, we are so happy we came! Food was stellar, with bomb.com sushi! But the best thing at the place was the service! And the chicken was smoked perfectly! Corn bread was warm and moist but you must love butter as it's drizzled liberally with melted butter. This restaurant is a beautiful respite from the sometimes heavy cuisine of Puerto Rico. The restaurant itself is truly picturesque- a sort of tree house overlooking the organic garden where much of their food is grown. The food is a perfect match for the fresh atmosphere and is almost entirely locally sourced. We decided to split two sushi rolls and an appetizer as we watched the sunset from the tree house. The Oysters: perfect, I only wish we had ordered more. These were beautifully fresh and served with horseradish, mango, and cocktail sauce. The Culebra Roll: a great fresh roll featuring both local seafood and fruit. The Lobster Roll: featuring Caribbean lobster with local veggies and a delicious sauce. A much needed respite after days of mofongo. We also ordered a side of watermelon, which was a bit pricey at $3, but fresh fruit is very hard to come by on the islands and it was very much appreciated! This is a restaurant I will definitely return to on my next trip to Vieques. read more

A boneless chicken breast had a large bone which my daughter almost swallowed, ribs were tough, hush puppies had no seasoning. Noche next door (same owners) is lovely. Food is pricey but worth it. The food was really good. I wanted a steak with some hush puppies and they accomadated me. We got their 10 minutes before closing and still sat us down. The watermelon margarita was real good! The Chicken Pinnable dish was amazing. Our waiter JP was a younsta and was really great. The decoration of the place was really coo. We have been to Vieques many times and have been to the variations of Tin Box, always enjoying our experience and the ambiance. This time, unfortunately, we had a horrific experience. When arrived for our 6:45 reservation at 6:40, the hostesses let us know we would need to wait at least ten minutes for our table, despite having a reservation and there being open tables. She quickly corrected herself and said "oh right, you have a reservation, I can seat you at your table right now." When we said down at 6:45, we very quickly knew what we wanted to eat since we were so hungry. We ordered two appetizers: bbq wings and fried calamari and entrees- trio of bbq, smoked chicken platter, full rack of ribs, a side of beans and rice and a side of the jicama slaw. Fifty minutes later, we were still waiting on our food. We had not seen the waitress near our table so I got up to find her and inquired what was taking so long, "it's really busy, we have a lot of customer" and walked away. The restaurant was half full with many staff wandering around or gathering at the kitchen window. The waitress shrugged off our inquiry but did return and said our ticket was the next up and they were playing our food. Was a bit confused at that since we were under the impression our food would be fresh. Twenty minutes later, after waiting over 60 minutes for food, the waitress appeared with our order. I said the calamari was supposed to be our appetizer and the response "well you never said that". Each of our orders were incorrect, our sides were all wrong, we did not get a side of beans as ordered and all of our food was COLD! The calamari was rubbery and cold, not crunchy.. my pulled pork was ice cold as well as my wife's wings, COLD! The pork was so salty, it was inedible. The chicken was also cold. The rack of ribs was not hot but our children didn't mind. The jicama slaw tasted like it was made last week- it was rancid, wilted and soggy. No crunch to the jicama. I got up and asked for the manager and was told there wasn't one, no one was supervising. No wonder!!! A different waitress asked what she could do, I explained the problems with our food and the response "well, we are really busy. What do you want me to do about it? How can I make it better. I bring everything back and they will just remake everything". In an angry defensive tone. We explained that we did not wished to wait another hour for tasteless food but agreed to give some things a second chance. Upon return 15 minutes later she brought some things back and said she would remove two of our entrees, the wings and slaw off of our bill. When we recurved the bill, only one item was removed from our bill. When we questioned this, we were again met with a defensive attitude and excuses. This business is horribly run and the food is inedible. We were so sad because Chez shack was a favorite. Avoid this establishment!!! All of the tables around us were complaining as well and had long waits with incorrect orders. read more

Outstanding food, friendly staff, great atmosphere, if they could just speed up the kitchen, this will be the best restaurant on the island and you won't be able to get a seat during high season. The quality of the food is undeniable, they grow their own veggies out back, or have the best oysters flown in. The BBQ is first rate according to our 12-year old meat connoisseur, "almost as good as Pappy's in St. Louis", with sides to match, which is high praise in the BBQ world. Salads are huge and should probably split between two people, though their freshness is outstanding. Our arugula salad had to be fresh picked, since they ran out, which was nice, but didn't exactly speed the process. Oysters were as good as any you'll find and nicely prepared. Kids got dessert, which was freshly made churros with bananas and chocolate - top notch in their book. Draft beer is an island first and the watermelon margarita was up to Class A bartending standards, no premade mix here, only fresh juices, and it shows. The only complaint is the slowness of the kitchen, which can be understood as it's a brand new place that's making everything fresh and up to a high standard. Yes, there's island time, but there's also slow. I'm sure they'll fix that with experience and when they do, this will be a can't miss experience in Vieques. The food already is. read more

Another spot owned by expats and not locals that basically just serves watered down "ethnic food" (sushi) along with random smatterings of BBQ?! and hints of local cuisine for the homogenized tourists from the mainland, all of which is way overpriced. The sushi rice was badly seasoned and over cooked - I've had rainbow rolls from takeout spots in New York that were much tastier. This place came highly recommended from a Harper's Bazaar article on Vieques that has me thinking the author had her entire trip paid for. This was back in August but I forgot to finish my review for this place. Months later it still makes me angry to think of our experience here. We didn't even stay for a drink here - the rude attitude we received when we walked in was appalling. We had walked in 20 minutes before 4pm and we saw a waitress and asked if they were open. Sure the place was empty but the door was wide open so we just assumed maybe we were the first people there. I mean come on we are on an island during low season, it's not like everywhere will be packed in the middle of the afternoon. The waitress glared at us and asked does it look like it is open?! Um yea if we are asking then clearly we are not sure. Seriously if you are in the line of customer service as all waiters and waitresses are - you should practice being nice to potential customers. read more

We tried Tin Box on the recommendation of one of our cab drivers and we were not disappointed. The dining area is multiple levels, open air, and very clean. We were seated toward the back with great views of the forest and the garden below where Tin Box grows all their own produce. You are welcome to walk down and tour the garden, and I recommend you do. Our server was exceptionally friendly and recommended a watermelon & smoked jalapeno margarita (watermelon puree made in-house). It was the best cocktail I have had in a long time. For dinner, I got the bbq sampler, which came with the most delicious bbq pork I have had in my life. We didn't have room for dessert, but we ordered a slice of the house-made Key Lime pie anyway. When I was in Vieques with some friends, we searched high and low with the little cell service we had for places to eat. Thankfully one of us managed to get service and suggested we hit up Tin Box after our stunning and beautiful bioluminescent kayak tour. Mosquitos aside, as this place is outside, the fun is just that, being outside, next to a forest, at the top of a mountain, on an island in the middle of the Caribbean, with some of the best food as well as greatest friendliest servers ever. We were surprised but pleased to see Lionfish on the menu. Knowing just how invasive they are, we were eager to rid the locale of any of them by eating as many we could get our hands on. They are buttery, light, delicious, and for me coming from California, were an extremely rare if not impossible find to delight in. So we had that to start. Being that this is not only a sushi restaurant, but a BBQ and a bar, it would be appropriate to try their BBQ Pulled Pork (and I about melted like the pork when I ate this), some Mac & Cheese, French Fries and Watermelon Margarita. I was so into what I was eating that I don't even remember what my friends got. I think one got ribs, another got some fish or something, who cares. Point is, it's all about Lionfish, BBQ anything, and Watermelon Margaritas at this place. Stay for the relaxing, kick back friendly attitude, and just take in the fact you're sitting in an outdoor restaurant, built on the side of a mountain, with a lush forest below - take it in, take it in, take it in, and that's what we did. While close to closing time, we weren't rushed, and really got to satisfy our hunger for what we ranked "The Best Restaurant In Puerto Rico", and while you're not going to find any horrible places in the island chain, this is definitely one to go out of your way for. If you got a way to get there, GO! You won't be disappointed. If you happen to be staying at the W Hotel, make sure you pick up a bit extra food and bring it back with you, it beats anything they serve at their restaurant. We came to Tin Box for drinks and an oyster snack before dinner at Noche. The drinks were tasty and well mixed. The oysters were fresh but we were bummed to see they were all shipped from the East Coast. The whole experience was ELEVATED by the Huckleberry Finn style tree house that overlooks a small valley filled with fresh flowers and produce used by both Tin Box and neighboring Noche Restaurant. The drinks and food was a little pricey for what we received but in all we had a good time and will return again. read more

After an inattentive server, (will give her fair credit for being nice when she bothered to visit our table) - she had the nerve to chase us outside and beg for more tip. I was dissapointed with the food here. i ordered the ribs, mac and cheese and hush puppies. The ribs were pretty bad, the meat was tough and fatty, not at all fall off the bone. If you want ribs go back to the US and eat them. Hush puppies were pretty bland and dry. Mac and cheese was good though. Interesting combination of smokehouse sushi & oysters but nothing special that I would go back for. Calamari was good but too salty. My husbands poor boy roll was stale and his fries were a bit too salty. The watermelon salad was flat and I'm really surprised their most popular item on the menu according to the server. I'd like to know who these six people that gave this place 4 or 5 stars are! This place is a joke. The oysters were okay, nothing special about the salad and we wanted to split the BBQ trio sampler, but the sampler came with just one tiny rib that we had to share! We had to saw it in half to be able to get two bites each. And there was nothing great about any of these BBQ meats. We can make better stuff on our own grill. The service was equally disappointing. The waitress didn't even ask us about dessert and with all this disappointment the bill came to $80. Just about any other place you'll try on this island will be better or at least cheaper if equally disappointing. Hope their new place, Noche, is better than this place, but we're not brave enough after tonight's meal to give it a try. read more
