~ A BOOKLOVER'S HAVEN ~ Timbre Books is everything I've ever wanted in a bookstore. When you walk in, you're greeted by a bright, airy, modern, and warm space. There are a couple of two person tables near the front, next to big, dreamy windows, perfect for working or reading. To the right, there's a wonderful selection of children's books and cozy reading nooks. It was heartwarming to see kids sprawled out, reading and lost in their own worlds. There's also a table towards the back with charming cards for purchase. Their book selection is impressively diverse and thoughtfully curated, with many titles featuring staff recommendations and reviews. I especially enjoy horror/psychological thrillers and nonfiction memoirs, and there's plenty of those, as well as the newest, hottest books from social media (booktok). They have a rewards program and a monthly newsletter that's thoughtfully crafted giving us the scoop on new arrivals, events, and book recommendations. Their book club meets monthly and has a laid-back, low maintenance vibe making it perfect for busy people who just want to casually discuss a book. I happened to visit during one of these meetings, and it was so wholesome to see people sharing baked goods, laughter being heard, and enjoying each other's company. The atmosphere here feels like a true community, and it gives you those warm, fuzzy feelings. When I mentioned it was my first visit, Mirna quickly made me feel welcomed by sharing details about the store, answering my questions, and suggesting some of her favorite books based on my interests. It's great that the staff have diverse tastes and can offer varied recommendations! I think this might be my favorite book store I've ever visited. I loved the personalized recommendations is. No idea who Mirna is but I'm pretty sure they're my literary soulmate. Every book they recommended I've either LOVED or was high up on my TBR. Also - we unknowingly came in right before close, and it wasn't until a friend said "we should go, they closed 20 minutes ago" that I even realized this! The girl working was so kind she never even mentioned they had been closed for over 20 minutes. I feel like that's going above and beyond and I'm so grateful for her time! read more

Lovely place to be. The most awesome selection of books ever. Loved all of the environmental and social justice books on display from my most beloved favorite authors. Sweet kids section and amazing plants and retro vintage feel. Merna was awesome guiding me through history and books selections. Appreciate how this indie book shop is locally family owned and run in the heart of mid town Ventura with excellent coffee, plant shop, and boutiques nearby. Will return over and over again. Such a unique bookstore find. The selection of books is wonderfully curated. I so appreciate a small bookstore with a great and easy display layout. There is plenty of street parking and a gender nuetral restroom availble. We venture to Ventura from Santa Clarita a couple times a month and are very happy to have come across this bookstore. There is a cafe nearby as well as other quaint stores to check out in the area. The employees here were helpful and friendly. I love reading the employee reviews and recommendations. I ended up purchasing one of the employee recommended books. My adult daughter found a unique vegan cookbook and purchased a woodworking book for her father as a gift. If you live in the area, I overheard the employees talking about different bookclubs they host in the evenings at the store. I most definitely would give that a try if I lived nearby. By the way, Timbre is pronounced TAM-burr, which is the distinctive property of a complex sound. A distinctive name for an especial store. Hidden gem of a bookstore. This place is so calming, and the employees here are so welcoming.

This book store is so pretty. The smaller than B&N bookstore makes it feel like the books they offer are more important. They aren't overflowing with all the basic popular picks- but you can find them, too. I bought at least $100 of a wide variety of beautiful books my first time there. The employee was super helpful and very kind. There was a book club meeting in the other half, whose laughter made the environment even more positive. Next door is the cutest plant store and next to that, a sweet little coffee shop. Plan to spend some time and some money:) We will definitely be back! read more

Fantastic little independent book shop in Ventura. I was visiting Ojai and came downtown for the morning, so of course I checked indiebound and found Timbre Books. It's quite small but very well curated, with a strong selection of new and featured titles, fiction, non-fiction, poetry and essays. There's also a decent sized YA section and, of course, children's books. They have a small selection of some stationery, cards and merch so you won't be stuck for a gift. There are also a few tables and chairs up front to allow people to relax and browse their selections, which makes it feel open and welcoming. While I was browsing, a couple of patrons came in asking about signed copies of books because they'd seen that Amanda Gorman visited the shop. Seems like it has a nice community of locals who do all of their bookshopping there, which is lovely to see. I enjoyed browsing and picked up a copy of Speedboat by Renata Adler. I'll definitely check in again anytime I find myself in the area. read more

When we first stepped inside this gorgeous, beautifully curated store, my daughter's jaw dropped, her eyes sparkled and grew wide as she exclaimed "Wow! There's nothing like a real, live bookstore." The layout is spacious, modern, bright and welcoming, their boutique selection is outstanding and chosen with refinement, intelligence and loving-care. (Although boomers may bristle at some of the spicier progressive content, including "banned books.") The background music is excellent, the vibe is friendly, the staff courteous, kind and helpful. The children's section is outstandingly done, with timeless classics and inspiring new works, complete with nooks, floor cushions, cafe tables and chairs to nestle into with a good story. Their card and journal selection is also excellent. On our first visit we easily ooh'ed and ahh'ed our way through two hours in what seemed to be only minutes and left with a happy handful of new tales to lose ourselves in, learn from and love. A gift card from Timbre is a ticket to new worlds and a unique gift for friends and family. Timbre Books is like a warm blanket. As a youngster, I was uncoordinated, not very good at sports, and suffered from acute nearsightedness and astigmatism. So, like many other children, books were a source of great comfort, identity and refuge for me. Timbre Books is a wonderful, locally-owned bookstore that brings me back to the comforts of my childhood. Timbre abuts Singing Sun, a quaint little coffee shop, and a hair salon near midtown on Main Street. The Timbre storefront is understated and inconspicuous, but patrons entering are greeted with a sizable and surprisingly eclectic book collection. Books for all ages and interests are stored on the neatly organized and compact shelves, including the kinds of books that I devoured as a child while sitting in the inspiring surroundings of my school library. During my youth I read constantly despite my extremely poor vision. My glasses were so thick that they came with an extensive safety warning, a reinforced elastic head strap to keep them from sliding down my nose, and a detachable visor to prevent facial burns from refracted solar rays when playing outdoors. My teachers used to lock my 'outdoor glasses' up in a cabinet when I'd get to class and switch to my indoor glasses, so that the other kids wouldn't take them to burn things near the window on sunny days. The Timbre staff is extremely helpful and widely read, so book inquiries and requests for reading suggestions from patrons are always met with a knowing smile and quick tour of the well-stocked shelves. The space is logically organized with each section clearly labeled to help those who know what they want and guide others in the mood to just browse. As a child, my nickname was Batman. My grandmother gave me that nickname, because she'd often say that I was "as blind as a bat." Grandma Shirlene lived with us for most of my life and completely let go of the ability to empathize with others in her late sixties. During junior high and high school, I liked to sit in the back of my classes near my best friend, 'Bingo.' Bingo and I were inseparable. Bingo's real name was Darrell, but everyone called him Bingo because he had a mild case of Tourette's that compelled him to shout out random numbers at the most inopportune times. He and I were both voracious readers, and we stayed in touch over the years. Ironically, Bingo became a stock trader in New York City and did very well for himself, though he never forgave Grandma Shirlene for his nickname. Timbre Books is a wonderful enclave that feeds my curious nature and transports me to another time. The name 'Timbre' is entirely appropriate, because the shop is unique and resonates with me in very distinct and personal way. Thank you Timbre Books! read more

Small, quaint, & personal, this little book store is nestled next to the Singing Sun coffee shop on Main Street in Ventura. The staff is approachable and friendly and extremely helpful in finding good reads you want to digest. My 13-year-old daughter and I spent about an hour, using their typewriter (loved it) and browsing our selections, while drinking coffee from next door.
