The name implies ice cream - which they have... BUT being the cold and wet day it was in St. John's today I was in search of a hot beverage and sweet. Cafe latte in one hand and an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie in the other, I was prepared to face the cold winds coming in through the harbour. Not good. Unfortunately I have to be honest. I did not enjoy my latte. It was much like drinking a cup of hot milk. Maybe they only use 1 shot of espresso for medium lattes. I didn't ask.... and I also didn't finish drinking the latte. The cookie was 6/10. It was a large and very flat cookie. Not sure what the baking trick is to prevent your cookie batter from spreading out to far and neither do they. The cookie consistency was a crispy around the edge with a soft chewy center. I ate the whole thing. Maybe next time I will try their ice cream but for today I have to say there are other local coffee purveyors I will stick with while I'm here.

My husband and I love fish cakes so we had to give them a try. They were cod fish cakes, baked just like the window said. They do sell out fast so call to check if it's available or come earlier in the day. They were really good, a little more on the potato side if that's what you're into, but still delicious. Plus the home made tartar sauce was so good, tasted like they made the mayo fresh. Their baked goods also looked divine. Must try in st.Johns

Thank you to manager Troy, who hails from the lovely state of Queensland, Australia, baristas know how to make a coffee (at least that's what I think!). At the bottom of signal hill, it's on the way from a hike, and not too far out of the way if you want to pick a coffee up on the way to work. Did I also mention they have a pretty darn fine carrot cake to go with the really good coffee? Really should go and check it out!

We walked to both places so driving and parking was not a problem. Interestingly there were a lot of classic vehicles going by. You can order beer, cocktails, soup, sandwiches and even coffee. We sat outside at the deck. It was really nice to sit and watch the people, cars and motorcycles pass by. The sandwiches ar interesting and not oversized or over priced. There is secure WiFi although it seemed to have difficulty reaching the deck. If you walked to Signal Hill you should stop at the Battery Cafe because you'll walk right past it and you deserve it. The Newfoundland sundae with jam and ice cream is worth ordering on a warm day.

There are lots of tables. The sound level ideal as it was pleasant and yet we could have a conversation without feeling conspicuous. The sandwiches were delicious. I swapped half my roasted vegetable sandwich with my wife who had a turkey with avocado sandwich. They were both very good. One thing was that the bottom of mine was soggy but that happens. The turkey sandwich bun was not at all soggy. We enjoyed our drinks and sitting and watching the people go by. The staff were friendly and helpful. You wait for drinks at the counter but they bring food orders to your table. That's a great way to to it as it doesn't take nearly as long to make drinks as it does food.
