I do love most of products I have gotten at the stores, but I always feel that I need to critically appraise each item before I buy it. The SLO store is smaller than the other two "neighborhood" stores in Santa Barbara and Carmel, and the merchandise seems to be geared more toward a college crowd. Since half the populace here is in college, this may be appropriate. My recent visit turned up some denim togs suitable for students, and some brightly colored small housewares. Good luck. This is a small but immaculate store. It's bright, modern, comfortable with the stock laid out in a logical and pleasing manner. There are private dressing rooms and strategically placed mirrors to check out your look. They carry blouses, pants, skirts and a limited selection of dresses. They carry a lot of items from designers such as Eileen Fisher, Lilla P, Dl1961, Bailey44, Pete, Frank and Eileen, Tolani,Driftwood, BBelts amongst other things. The owners have a keen eye for color and you can look really good coming out of this spot. The owners are in and about the place every day. Being able to speak directly with the owner adds a nice personal touch. While they do carry a bigger variety of sizing then the stereotypical size zero model if you fall outside of the near normal size range, your choices may be limited. Pricing isn't super elite premium (the sales here offer some real bargains in particular) but this is not a bargain fast fashion spot. It's very close to the kind of shop where if you have to ask what the prices are, then you shouldn't be in there. This is an all women's shop so if you are not the type to patiently wait while your spouse puts on minor fashion show there are a couple of coffee shops close by, along with some pubs just in case it helps you out. All in all this is a shop that can make you look really really great.

I turned up about an hour before closing and not one, but two kind salespersons helped me search the store. We went thru most of the clearance racks, and the sneaker sections, and at first found nothing. For some reason, the sneakers were displayed no where near where they normally should be. While it took awhile, they were a bargain, and my wife loved them, and I got two pairs. They were New Balance brand which also had nice thick comfy soles. If one wants discount sneakers at outlet prices, this is far better than driving to the Oxnard Outlet area. In addition, they did honor giving a new customer discount, thus saving even more.

After trying on several pairs of shoes, I brought two pairs to the front with the intention of purchasing one of them. They were different brands, so I figured it was pretty likely that at least one qualified in the 25% sale. The employee working that day (at least the only one I saw or spoke to) let me know neither one qualified and freely admitted that the "almost everything" was really not accurate, pointing to just a couple of sections where there were shoes on sale. Thanks for false advertising, DSW. Beyond this bad start, the shoes I selected from the clearance section (which, mind you, were not inherently outside of the 25% off sale) had a purple sticker, indicating they were 30% off the price listed on the box, which said $63.99 (see photo). When I went to check out, I learned this was a mistake -- the shoes rung up at $84.98. Finally, I have donated shoes many times and had accumulated $35 in rewards prior to this visit. Instead of being able to use all of this credit towards my purchase, I was only permitted to use three rewards at a time -- even though they are tiny ($5) and have expiration dates. This was a first for me, and while I briefly asked for clarification, I did not feel like getting into an argument with a store employee. This experience was a disappointing one. Truth be told, my last few visits at DSW locations in the Bay Area have not been good. I think the business is simply going downhill.
