We had a decent sized group out for a bar crawl last Saturday afternoon. The bartender at Tiki Lounge was very angry that we didn't call ahead. The bar was empty, so it didn't seem like a huge deal, but we apologized, and everyone patiently waited for him to get our drinks. He was in a bad mood the whole time, so we cut it shorter than expected and moved onto the next. During a short weekend trip to Pittsburgh, we decided to explore Carson Street and started our day drinking at this neat tiki lounge. We came in early on a weekday, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves, but that gave us a great opportunity to soak in the underground club vibe. The layout is super unique, with a small see-through section of the floor (note: maybe skip the skirt) and quirky bathrooms that added to the fun atmosphere. The drink menu had a great selection of tropical classics, but we were also pleasantly surprised by their tequila offerings. My friend is an Espolon fan, so we ordered two shots, but we were only able to get one as it was the end of the bottle. We did get cute souvenir tiki shot glasses to take home with us. The tropical drinks we ordered were delicious, colorful, and exactly what you'd hope for at a tiki bar. The friendly bartender really made our experience memorable--super welcoming and knowledgeable about the drink selection, which added to the relaxed, fun vibe of the place. read more

Racist ass place don't go! I have never felt so disrespected and humiliated at a place in my life. I ordered a drink, didn't like it, and calmly asked if I could get two separate shots on the side instead. I was completely willing to pay extra this was not about avoiding payment, just fixing a drink I didn't enjoy. Instead of being treated like a paying customer, I was met with hostility and blatant disrespect. Money was literally thrown in my face, which was degrading and unacceptable. Before I could even process what was happening, security was called and I was kicked out, despite trying to handle the situation calmly and respectfully. What made this even worse is that the treatment felt deeply discriminatory and racist. I was not treated with basic dignity, and it's hard to ignore the role that bias may have played in how quickly things escalated. No one deserves to be treated this way. This experience was upsetting, humiliating, and completely unacceptable. I would strongly warn others to avoid this place. read more

Was almost a 5 star review, until a drunk off-duty Tiki bar employee came in and invaded our good time. We were on our way out with a group of 8, it was the first time I had been there and I truly did like the bar up until this employee showed up with his friend who ruined the experience for me forever. Positives: Angie the bartender is a considerate person, treat her well and she will treat you well. She was very much a conflict resolver and a good person generally, made good drinks. Drinks are on-theme and pretty good. Neat to be able to buy souvenir cups. Negatives: Easily gets cramped. Kinda dark. Lots of dark corners. Heard it is a sweatbox on the weekends. Very tiny, dangerous staircases to bathrooms. 3 foot aisle between bar and booths. Based on numerous reviews, employees have had a history of being out of line at this place, and this was the first thing I encountered that I didn't like. Pinball is $1 per game. Neon sign is busted out front. Shows its age. It was such a disappointing end to an otherwise positive night. We were there on a Thursday around 9 for a wedding rehearsal dinner after-dinner-drink. Place was pretty empty, about 5 patrons when we came in. After less than an hour of drinking, our night was over, and they had drained us of several hundred dollars for the shots and the volcano and multiple drinks, but it was all good. Around 10 or 11 o'clock, we were looking to get out of the place and things were winding down with our group, when a guy showed up with this girl in a hoodie and things got lame from there. We had been sitting next to the pinball machines, playing them while waiting for the Uber XL to take the group onward, when this guy rolls up and breaks the machine intentionally. This caused free games to be given to his female friend -- after we dumped like $10 into this one machine. Then, after an awkward moment with his female friend, where I patted her on the back for getting a free game -- she squealed that I was "acting weird" for touching her -- I did my best to apologize but she sicked her male friend on me, who got in my face and kept yelling "DO YOU KNOW I WORK HERE?" "I WORK HERE" and "HEY MAN I WORK HERE" to which I responded, "WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THIS INFORMATION?" I ducked the conflict, and after clearing my tab, as I made my way to the door, I made sure to verbally let the guy know he was in the wrong, and he began pushing me out with his chest like a real rube. Then the doorman bouncer who was actually working got in the middle and also pushed me out but also whispered apologies in my ear as I explained I would have left a lot faster if everyone just left me alone. Then, Angie The Bartender ran out and was like "Oh man you forgot your souvenir mug!" This was exemplary. Anyway, it was my first time there, never will return. Others may love the place or have fond memories, but the dusty decor and the insanely territorial bouncer incident turned me off forever. There was just no conflict resolution. Maybe its the stress of all the dumb shootings in the neighborhood. But, no apology was good enough for him (or the girl, afaik). My friends told me later he was very drunk and so was the girl he was with. Huh. Having read the reviews, I see they've had a history of egotistical bouncers and questionable bartenders. As a person who used to work as a restaurant manager, this guy wasn't respecting the place. He shouldn't have come in and taken over, flaunting his ability to hack the Godzilla Pinball machine, on a Thursday, just because he considered it a throw-away day. It's only because of activities like that that people end up having a bad time and not coming back. It has that attitude of "we don't need customers" which translates to less customers overall. Tiki Lounge is an amazing little spot on E. Carson Street in the south side flats. It is so cool! There are little nooks and crannies to relax and sip on your delicious Polynesian cocktails! The spot is happening on the weekends- I prefer a more chill atmosphere during the week. The drinks are over the top & put a smile on your face. We came here for a birthday bar crawl and were met with the rudest bartenders of all the bars we went to that night. Ignored our whole party, said they couldn't serve their SIGNATURE volcano drink after 9pm despite it being for 4 people because of "how much alcohol is in it." We felt unwelcome and like a burden the whole time. With how cool the vibe looks online, I would have never expected the bartenders to be so awful. A tiki bar is a must whenever I'm traveling and this place has been up there for best decorated. What kept me to only one drink was the bartender. He was honest and said he doesn't drink nothing in the menu, which had us skeptical of ordering. When we did, mostly everything was pre made, which came out fine but not as good as comparison to authentic tiki bars. Tiki lounge is a stop we make every time we visit Pittsburgh. To start with the interior of the place is intriguing. you enter by wandering from a typical urban streetscape through the gaping mouth of a tropical deity, overhead to the right you will notice amazing water features behind glass. As. You move through the place you will see hundreds of mysterious details of tiki culture. Waterfalls, fountains, carvings of head hunters! a month in this joint and you couldn't take it all in. This said, Tiki Lounge is not your oh so snooty hipster craft cocktail joint, it is much much better. How can you beat the great combination of neighborhood bar that morphs into a dance club in the evenings with the enchanted charm of a slightly shabby vintage tropical paradise? As always a place is no better than the folks who run it. Lucky for us on the several times we have visited we have been taken care of by the manager Michelle who is often behind the bar. It is great to be met with her smile and genuine charisma, she makes you feel like Norm at Cheers. While juggling other patrons she took time to visit with us, give a history of the place and a brief tour. read more

Went last night, and security told my friend that the bartender said she wasn't allowed in. We asked why and the security guard, equally confused as us, said that she just said that "the girl in the white shirt" wasn't allowed in. He tried to ask her why and she just rolled her eyes and said "absolutely not". Mind you, we have never been there and have never seen this woman in our lives. Today I posted about it on their facebook and they told me that "they don't let intoxicated people into the building." First, we were completely sober. GREAT TIKI DIVE BAR. James the bartender is an old school Rockabilly Punk Rocker with some great stories and connections to my hometown, Detroit. This is my kind of place. If you reviewed it and gave it one star, you didn't get it and probably never will. Good bartenders don't jump and cater to your every whim. If you want that go to f#cking Applebee's. I go to a bar for atmosphere and good stories from a good bartender and this place has it in spades. Also, you can judge a truly good bar by it's regulars. Cindy carries a freakin can of soup and she'll knock your ass out with it if you mess with her! But if you do, chances are I'd take care of you before she ever reached into her purse. For 20-somethings it's probably a great "whoot whoot" bar on the weekends, for 30-somethings and up it's a great day drinking bar with plenty of good stories. This review is based primarily on the building itself. I don't usually write negative reviews but I think this one needs written. On a Saturday, we walked in only to be greeted by a cloud of cigarette smoke from a customer and the place smells musty(maybe even moldy). They have waterfall features that perhaps are contributing to this smell. The air quality was suffocating overall and did not feel safe enough to stay for a drink. I was really looking forward to coming here and was sadly disappointed. I hope management will look into this problem because this place has a lot of potential. read more

I wanted to like this place, I really did - especially after seeing a 2' x 2' advertisement for this place in Pittsburgh magazine, upon which after seeing I was hoping to come to some sort of tropical paradise with a volcano, some fire dancers, and maybe some strong pain in the ass drinks. Instead, my friend and I narrowly side stepped a huge mess of vomit to get into Tiki Lounge. We were slightly comforted by getting lei'd immediately upon arrival, but we weren't fans of the lounge in general. It's super small, and had to squeeze our way all the way to the back of the bar/lounge - which led to an equally small dance floor which reminded me of a dark room in a smoky frathouse (wouldn't be surprised if Molly's were being passed around). The whole scene just made my friend and i feel uncomfortable so we took the advice of some other Tiki Lounger's who declared, we're going to Diesel. Went to Pittsburgh to celebrate me and my SO's anniversary. We went to a local comedy club and Dave n Buster's, had a great time! After the show we decided to walk down E Carson because it was near our hotel to see what bars were busy on that Friday night. This Tiki Lounge was a blessing in disguise, so fun, and the bar staff was very friendly and attentive. Such a cool venue and much bigger than appears, super fun to just walk around and explore the building. Only reason it's not 5 stars is because there didn't seem to be a ton a seating and was very poorly lit but that isn't a super huge deal. Tiki gets a lot of mixed reviews and I'm one of those people who've always dug this joint. Love when Todd (one of my oldest and closest friends) is there spinning punk/rock tunes. I like going to tiki bars in different cities and have always considered Tiki Lounge to be up there with some of the best. The interior is fantastic with with molded lava like seating, water feature and more. They have the cutest tiki drink trinkets (big selection) and plastic leis. One of the finest mixologists in the city is responsible for the incredibly authentic drinks being served. Many bars like this limit the number of drinks they will serve because of the alcohol content. No exception here. They make a stiff drink that's not for the weak. Honestly think they make one of the best Zombies around. When they opened back in '02 I remember thinking it was the greatest thing to happen to Pittsburgh. Beware of the tiki lounge. You will first be lured in by the bamboo structures, moist rocks, and moldy waterfall. This tiki lounge in the center of Pittsburgh features a dance floor brought to you by Lotrimin Antifungal Cream, as it is shoes optional. The crumbs on the floor will feel just like sand! One of the weirdest but coolest bars I have ever visited. They have an incredibly tacky tiki theme, complete with complimentary leis at the door. So, I was amazed when we went in to find the dance floor in back was bumping with energy. Great crowd. Probably the best I've seen on Carson Street, period. They had an eclectic and fun mix of music, too. It's also cool that they have a basement bar with a slightly more chill vibe. Between the top and basement floors is a little alcove partially hidden behind a wall with a long padded booth where you can relax and get some privacy - I like being able to move around and get different experiences in one bar, and Tiki comes through great on that front. There is a dracula themed pin ball machine in here, as well. Can't beat that. Drink selection is standard but reasonably priced. Definitely the most memorable stop in this neighborhood, it shouldn't be missed. read more

This is one of the decent bars on Carson street, they charged us a 1$ cover which is okay and they have a full bar on the first floor and in the basement they have a bar but you don't get the cocktails. They don't have table service so you need to order at the bar ... This is a late night kind of place so crowd gets bigger almost around midnight ...they also have a dance floor inside, the music is pretty cool . This place is soooo cool! My boyfriend had visited here years back while living in the city so he took me to visit while we were in town over the weekend. I had no idea what to expect since I'm not really the kind of demographic they are trying to attract but it was actually really fun. You can tell this place is a late night spot where people get super drunk and act stupid, the amount of security can attest to that, which is why we got there early before all that started. The decor is just so unique for something in the middle of Pittsburgh, the drinks are cheap, and the fact that you can buy the tiki-themed glasses is just so cool! We didn't stay long but we walked around to all the different levels and checked out the empty dance floor and I can totally see this place getting packed around 11PM. read more

I cut my hand trying get glass out of my shoe, and then proceeded to inform not one but four employees of this establishment. No one did anything to fix the problem.
