I continued hiring him for more than two years and paid approximately $6,000 for his services. Unfortunately, my experience changed significantly after an accident in June. On June 3, a rock thrown while Tony was weed eating shattered my sliding glass door. Tony told me he would "do what it takes to get it right" and filed an insurance claim. His insurer covered the damage, less his $250 deductible. He later told me it was "only fair" that I pay his deductible. I disagreed. After the accident, the reliable biweekly service changed dramatically. Tony mowed only twice over the next 10 weeks, both times after repeated follow-up, and reduced the work he performed. The grass became badly overgrown and we had to step in and maintain the property ourselves. We also left work early four separate times to handle the insurance and glass-repair process. When the glass was installed, the invoice was in Tony's name, but he told the glass company that I would pay his $250 deductible, despite my having told him in writing that I would not. When I reiterated that the deductible was his responsibility, he responded with profanity and personal insults and terminated our working relationship. I later followed up with the glass company to confirm the account had been settled. They had to contact Tony four times regarding the outstanding balance, and the deductible remained unpaid for several weeks after the glass was installed before he ultimately paid it. Accidents happen. My 2-star rating isn't because he broke the glass; it's because of how the accident, subsequent service, and a long-term customer relationship were handled afterward.
