The sad thing about many tea-houses in Ireland is, you can get the more sophisticated stuff but there's a very definite move away from the Irishness of the experience. Whereas here in Cupán Tae, not only can you get a wide selection of fancy tea, you can also get a good pot of Irish tea (black, rough, needs boiling water to draw the flavour out properly) AND get a rasher sandwich. The service was lovely, really friendly and efficient. I wish it wasn't so far away from where I live...but if I'm in Kerry, I will certainly be making a detour to Kenmare for a cuppa and a sandwich.

Since there are only six rooms situated on the west wing of an entire castle we pretty much had the run of the place. We never saw another guest. Julie and Sam are the sibling proprietors (also direct descendants of the original 17 century royal family that built the castle). Both were gracious and lovely. Since it was our anniversary we stayed up late listening to old jazz records in the castle library that resembled a hall at the Louvre. When we departed this morning we realized the only electronic device we picked up during our stay was a camera. Thank you Julie and Sam for a wonderful escape. We will never forget it.
