I know I know. Who writes a review for a gas station. Unfortunately gas stations on the water are…read morenot quite as ubiquitous as their counterparts on land. First off, with a car you just pull into the gas station without having to consider current or winds. No one needs to put out rubber bumpers so that you don't ding up your car. You never need assistance in launching your car after the fueling is done. You almost never have to worry about how long the fuel has been sitting at the station because the turn over is so fast. And finally unless you drive an 18 wheeler, you likely don't fuel up hundreds of gallons at a time. All these however are considerations when fueling up a boat, and makes selection of a marine fuel station difficult. Old Lyme Dock is the best fueling station on the Connecticut River mouth, and given it's central location on the long island sound, a really good station to know. For me it's a local station and the place where we almost exclusively fill up. Here are the reasons why I think this place deserves 5 stars. Location and Ease of Docking: First off this dock is perfectly positioned just upstream of the railroad bridge, and downstream of the railroad bridge. It is in a protected no wake zone, so no matter how bad the waves are out there, it's very calm in here. There is a huge American flag flying that lets you know the wind direction. The main fuel dock is in line with the current so you can find an easy approach against the current every time (either come one way or another). The fuel dock is very long and has a higher are lower section that are well protected with abundant fenders. Fuel Quality: The fuel they use is Shell, and turn over is fast since its a pretty busy dock. Most Marina fuel you have no idea what brand it is. Shell is a reputable fuel brand and my preferred fuel in cars Service: This is the real reason why they earn 5 stars. The service here is unbelievable. Dock hands are always ready to guide you into a spot, and put out more fenders or adjust existing ones as you pull up. When you ask for a particular amount of gas, the attendant watches the gauge for you and calls out the numbers as they get close. Most of all the accessibility is unbelievable. They have been willing to come out to the fuel station even on national holidays when they and everyone else is closed. I can't think of any other business willing to do that to get you out on the water. This place realizes that a large purchase of 200+ gallons of fuel could approach 1000 dollars, and treats you like a customer buying something worth 1000 dollars. This place will continue to get my business, and it should get yours too.
