La Campana absolutely lives up to the hype. I tried both the bocadillo de chorizo and the bocadillo…read morede calamares, and at only 4.50€ each, you really cannot beat the value. The chorizo was solid, but the bocadillo de calamares was on another level. Fried to perfection, served on soft bread, and the lemon aioli really set it off. We kept hearing from people all over Madrid that La Campana was the place to go, and I even overheard multiple walking tours throughout the week calling this THE spot for a bocadillo de calamares. After going myself, I completely get it. It is conveniently located right in Plaza Mayor where there are several bocadillo shops, but this is THE one you want. They move fast too. I was in and out of line and already eating in less than 5 minutes. Perfect spot if you want a quick but filling Spanish classic. Next time I am definitely sitting inside and trying more off the menu.

You also have the option to purchase aioli which pairs really well with it. The bread was warm and fresh and everything together makes it clear why this is their most popular item. At under 5 euros, it is an incredible value. The service is straightforward. The employees do not really speak much English, but they are nice and get you taken care of quickly. The shop is located right next to another nearly identical spot that sells the same thing, but La Campana is definitely the more popular one. It gets crowded very fast so it helps to arrive early or be ready to squeeze in. The interior is pretty bare bones with small tables and chairs that fit about 25 people, but it serves its purpose and keeps the focus on the food.

We made our way there only to be rudely denied service or help of any kind! Heart broken and stewing in our shock we stumbled across BOCADILLO DE JAMON Y CHAMPAN and boy are we glad we did!!! Our server Boris is an absolute charming, warm friendly person who was so accommodating. He offered us some suggestions from the menu as well as explained all the Champs they offered. We settled on a couple of bottles of our favorite Veuve. The olives and Jamon are so fresh and tasty. The meat and cheese platter is heavenly! Any of the sandwiches made on the light, airy crusty bread are divine. Usually, bread on a rustic sandwich is overwhelmingly doughy, hard and chewy. Bocadillo's is light and airy with a tad of crunch. Boris informed us that the bread is made daily by a bakery and one of the best. They also serve a pureed roasted pepper sauce topped with Spanish olive oil (cold) for dipping your chips or sandwich in or simply eat as a cold soup. The desserts are just as amazing. Cheese cake and chocolate were top notch. If you are American and your Spanish is so-so, Boris can help you out. He speaks both languages fluently. He is so interesting and makes everything about Bocadillo that much more. He is very knowledgeable about the food they offer, how it is made, what it is made with and as far as the Champs he is full of knowledge as well. Prices are so reasonable as well. We made it back a few times to this place as Boris and the chef on duty made it that special for us. So if ever in Madrid stop by and ask for Boris! Have a few glasses of Champs (Spanish Rose great too)you will not be disappointed.
