Revisited We spent one Valentine's weekend in the town of Tiburon [Feb 2014]. We drove in the city and took the ferry to Angel Island State Park that morning and spent most of the day exploring the island through a guided tour. We've been meaning to do that for sometime. Fast forward to today with a beautiful spring-like weather in the low 70's. We revisited the town of Tiburon to have a late lunch here. We ate at the same place we did 4 years ago... wait, whoa, didn't realize that it was within days from four years ago since we were here. The memories were just like yesterday. We had lunch at Lily Kai Chinese Cuisine inside the Point Tiburon Plaza. We were able to walk through the town since we had more time to spend this time around. Folks were riding their bikes, hanging out and sitting by the dock of the Bay, people just out and about dining out, having ice cream. Such a relaxing place, nice and slow-paced. Also, I did not know that Tiburon has one of the shortest Main Streets in America. There are a few eateries along Main Street but there are also unoccupied spaces with no businesses in place. I'm always sad to see an empty space along a shopping area. Many of the restaurants are located on the waterfront and they have beautiful views of the bay and downtown San Francisco. Well, come to think of it, as it turned out, totally random that there was a lot of Robin Williams in our activities today including visiting the Mrs Doubtfire house on Pacific Heights in San Francisco then we went through the Robin Williams Tunnel, formerly the Waldo tunnel connecting the Golden Gate bridge to Marin County, then lunch at Robin Williams' hometown of Tiburon. Six months after our 2014 visit Robin Williams committed suicide [08.11.14]. R.I.P. Robin Williams. Review #0956

So you'd think in the summer the shops would be open past 6PM during any day but you'd be wrong. Week nights folks go to bed early around here I'm guessing. Made me sleepy just being there. We enjoyed a quiet walk around town. Parking was an issue since there were lots of people. How much money was lost that night.....? Town of Tiburon! Wake Up!

As a non-resident and a less-than-frequent visitor my impression is purely based on the few times when I made it all the way up to Tiburon - luckily during the "Indian Summer" which makes for perfect pictures and nice, warm Sunday afternoons on the water front. You'll get great views of the Bay and a little of SF skyline. Sam's Anchor Cafe is probably the most famous bar/restaurant over there with some other drinking and dining options on Main Street. Expectedly, parking can is tough but there are a bunch of (paid) parking lots around the Downtown area. The drive is also nice so turn your camera on for some amazing Bay views.

Beautiful dynamic fountain located in the town center of Tiburon, CA just north of San Francisco in Marin County.

The Town of Tiburon is a spectacular little northern California hideaway, located north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County, and down towards the end of Tiburon Boulevard. This feels like a very exclusive neighborhood with it's gorgeous homes perched on the hilltops, overlooking San Francisco Bay and the City of San Francisco. We had made dinner reservations at a nearby Italian restaurant, and just by coincidence we found ourselves parking right next to the ferry terminal, which shuttled commuters back and forth to downtown San Francisco on a quick 30 minute ride. Since we were a few minutes early (and the weather was spectacular), we wandered around the little town, enjoying the beautiful hanging flower baskets on each light pole. In the center of town is a really neat dynamic sculpture / fountain which is a 'must see' if you're in the area. Tiburon means 'Shark' in Spanish, and the sculpture is a series of aluminum panels shaped like a shark's dorsal fin, which seem to twist and turn in the sunlight. We watched the little kids laughing and pointing as the shark's fin seemed to pivot on it's axis, with the flowing water of the fountain underneath. All of the action can be found along Main Street, which sits at right angles to Tiburon Boulevard, down by the ferry docks. As a result, most of the restaurants and bars have wonderful views of the Bay and downtown San Francisco. The homes and condos in this area are all built on the sides of the hills with incredible views, and I can only guess at the value of the real estate. I'll move here after I make my second million as a world-famous travel writer.

    Sunset was beautiful.

The most basic is to park at the end of Vistazo Street and take the fire road to the church and back. This is an easy 1 mile walk which is good for people that aren't looking to go hiking but want to take an easy walk in nature. Another way to get to the church is from downtown which is only about 15-minute walk and has some elevation but still easy. I think that's a good idea for ferry day trippers to Tiburon looking for something more to do than just hanging out downtown. It's worth seeing Old Saint Hilary's Church because it's so historic but the open hours are extremely limited, I've never been in because it never seems to be open. Currently I think it's only open Sundays from 1-4pm. There are a few different trails in the preserve but nothing is super long, it's more about the amazing views of the city, bay, Angel Island, and beyond. It's quite breathtaking, especially in the spring with the wildflowers. A sign sits on the top saying Private Property and No Trespassing and looks like there are some more trails beyond but they don't look too maintained or stable. To make this a longer hike there is the loop that goes down to Tiburon Uplands Nature Preserve from one of the trails. This loops down to Paradise drive and adds about an extra mile.

It is less than one square mile in size, surrounded on three sides by the waters of the San Francisco Bay and composed of Belvedere Island, the Belvedere Lagoon and Corinthian Island. From Belvedere Island you can enjoy magnificent views of San Francisco, Mt. Tamalpais, Angel Island, Sausalito and the Golden Gate Bridge. The Stairways are called Belvedere Lanes consisting of a network of stairs and paths that connect the roadways on the island. In a bygone era, residents arrived at the island from San Francisco by boat and used the stairways to get to their summer houses. These days the lanes provide access to areas that may otherwise be difficult to reach by car as well as providing a means of escape in emergencies such as earthquakes or fire. Many local residents enjoy hiking the island through the passageways of the lanes. A different hand painted wooden sign marks each end of the lanes. The charming signs were the brainchild of artist and long-time Belvedere resident, Diana Bradley, who came up with the idea of using wood for the signs and presented the idea to the Belvedere City Council. She then contacted local artists and the first "painting party" was born. Ms. Bradley spearheaded the first two painting parties and Belvedere resident and artist, Virginia Doyle continued to recruit local artist for existing painted signs for the lanes. While enjoying Belvedere Island you may encounter raccoons, squirrels, skunks, birds and other wild animals. Enjoy climbing the stairs to your good health and happiness.

I ordered fish, and it was the smallest piece I've ever had. My husband had pasta with shrimp; unfortunately, they used the smallest and cheapest shrimp available. The Caesar salad was nothing special, no flavor, and we had to ask for extra dressing. The calamari appetizer didn't look appealing and lacked a fresh, vibrant color. Nothing was included with my $44 fish dish, so I had to order a side of roasted potatoes for extra $8, which were not fresh at all. When I asked our waiter, he said they make them daily, which likely means they were made anytime in the morning. Overall, it was not worth the $198 we spent on a tasteless dinner. Very disappointed that we chose Luna Blu for our special day, and we will definitely not be going back. Basically, you're paying for the view.

I believe it represents sails, and when the wind hits it, and there is always a breeze here since it's next to the water, it makes a clapping type sound. How come we don't have the art? Where are the dollars going? I was pleased to see the new fountain sculpture - COMING ABOUT - installed in the downtown Plaza of Tiburon in October of 2006. But it gives me mixed feelings. It really is quite beautiful, but OMG did it cost us way too much. Titled "COMING ABOUT," it is a set of steel sails coming out of a fountain. Steel sails that move "with the wind." (Actually they are mechanical, but don't tell anyone. It took an extra 3 months to get the underground wiring and transformer installed and upgraded to make "Coming About" perform properly.) Some folks say it represents a REGATTA; some say it is a SHARK'S FIN; some say it represents a BIRD'S WING. Me? Oh, I am sure. It represents the SAILS from the many local Bay area sailboats. Stand back, take a look. See if you don't agree with me. Especially when they start to change position. You can almost feel the wind as it whips through the sails! Designers and installers were the husband and wife team of Jeff Reed and Jennifer Madden. They spent the better part of a year of their lives on this Public Art. http://video.aol.com/video-detail/tiburon-fountain-plaza-installation-4/680382034 It is beautiful. No question about it. It does brighten up the Plaza area. Come down and have your holiday photos taken here. There's a Christmas tree in the background. Installed at a final cost around 1/2 a million dollars. Yikes! Think of all the hunger kids in the world we could have fed! Houses we could have built to replace the ones lost in Katrina! Or southern California? Health care options for children who don't have any! Medicine for folks in Africa with AIDS . . . . or San Francisco! 1/2 a million dollars! I do love Pubic Art, but I sure wish it didn't cost so much. There are so many better ways to spend our money. Ways that will truly make our world more livable. I would sleep better at night knowing that we helped more children go to bed with full tummies and warm blankies and the medicines they need, rather than Public Art that costs so damn much. And yet all we could do was squabble over what kind of benches to put in the Plaza.
