On our drive from Atlanta to Alabama, we stopped at the Thumbs Up Diner in Douglasville for a late breakfast. The restaurant is located in a strip mall. Service was very friendly. I'm used to Jersey diners, which are the best, but the food here was pretty good. The Denver omelette was well made, the biscuit with it was so so. I liked the diner feel and that was all. I was hoping to get biscuits and sausage gravy. The waitress told me they had it but then brought me a biscuit with a chicken strip on it. When I complain, they just say they're not doing the sausage gravy anymore, but she didn't come back and ask me if I wanted the chicken she just gave me chicken. I'm diabetic and I was coming close to my sugar crashing so I didn't have time to wait for her to make me another breakfast. The gravy was nasty, the biscuit was some weird flavor. The the grits were the old-fashioned stone ground, but they were still pretty firm and I asked for eggs scramble, medium, and they were scrambled really hard. The coffee almost taste like it has chicory in it, which I don't like. I gave it one star because that's what I had. That's the minimum I could do, but I would like to give it a -3 or 4 at best. Thumbs Up Diners are unique to Atlanta. There are several in the Atlanta metro area. My first experience was at their East Point location when we lived a few blocks away back in 2016. 3 things I loved about this location...1) everything tastes homemade, 2) the excellent (and friendly) service, and 3) the cleanliness. For my money Thumbs Up has the best breakfast or lunch around. I love their breakfast sandwiches on a toasted bagel. The skillets are amazing. The pancakes, french toast and waffles are all delicious and massive in size...one will fill you up...but be sure to ask for warm syrup and butter. I'm always a sucker for their grits...cheesy or with shrimp or fish...it's a southern thing. You gotta try them. Their lunch fare is also good. All of their sandwiches are delicious. For the sake of honesty...in 2025...after tax and tip...expect to pay at least $20/pp for breakfast. The breakfast items were tasty overall, but I wouldn't order the Rachel sandwich again. The Swiss cheese tasted like salty processed cheese, and the turkey was dry. I can get a bag of spuds with way more bell peppers, and onions in it for the microwave.. overall the people were nice. The atmosphere is good. I think they need to upgrade the colors in there. Excellent "hole-in-the-wall!" No it's literally a gem in a random shopping plaza in Douglasville. I ordered the shrimp and grits with a side of French toast. Both were delicious. My boyfriend ordered an egg biscuit while helping me eat the food I ordered. The serving sizes are definitely sharable, in my opinion. They were understaffed and made it know with a handwritten note on the glass window. As we finished eating more employees can in just in time for their Sunday morning rush. I will say it did take us a little while to get seated even though it didn't seem very busy in the restaurant. I am assuming they could have been short staffed the day we came. Other than that it was amazing. I had the Marie's omelet which was not in the menu but a side board on the wall. The server suggested I get the biscuit so I did. It was amazing, definitely a little different then other biscuits I have had but it was incredible and came with some peach jelly (I believe). Nice little hole in the wall! Definitely worth checking out. Located in a semi-abandoned looking shopping mall. Location doesn't really do them any favors for foot or street traffic, but has lots of parking! They open at 7am and we stopped in around 8 on a Friday. Obviously people are headed to work, so there weren't many customers inside already. From what I can remember, we chose our own seats, but that might be different when they get busy! This place has a fairly extensive menu and lots of specials on the board, so be on the lookout. They also make their own jams, which I thought was cool! Hubby got the French toast with bacon, I built my own breakfast-- eggs, toast, and bacon. No complaints from us! I actually wish I would have gotten something a little more adventurous. Coffee was hot and good! I read other reviews saying to try a specific drink (I think it was hot chocolate mixed with espresso or something) which I'll be sure to check out next time. I definitely want to come back. All in all, facility was well maintained and clean. Bathrooms were nice and even decorated to go along with the restaurant theme. My family and I literally googled a place to go and found this place. It was on the way to where we were going. They were fairly busy, so I took that as a good sign. It was a typical diner feel. Our server was inattentive to the people in her section, but would care for to-go orders and ignore the customers in store. It took over an hour to just get our food because she put in all of the to-go orders before she put in our order. The food almost made it worth it. The folks cooking in the back are doing a good job. But then, I had to go stand in the to-go line to just get service again. There was another young lady that had her section that did come over and help us several times. If the tip was not already included in the ticket, I would have made sure that she got the tip and not the lady in my section. So my hubby and I have been going here for over a year. Finding out today that our favorite server Vickie, who we knew was sick had passed away. Our visit today was bittersweet but to our surprise as a party of 2 they had charged a 20% gratuity to our check, no notification placed anywhere in the restaurant. 6 years in Atlanta and this was my first time dining at a Thumbs Up Diner. I was really looking forward to Sunday breakfast at this spot based on the awesome reviews. Maybe because it was a busy Sunday, I'm not sure why but I didn't enjoy my food or the experience. I waited a few minutes for a seat because I was told to sign in for a party of 1 although I wanted to sit at the bar. I was told the bar wasn't open seating and then a few minutes later a man walks in and takes a seat at the bar ‍. I didn't make a big deal and just patiently waited i was then taken to the bar and had to clean my own seat and move trash from the area in front of me as well as wait longer than expected for my order to be taken. Everything was just really off and it appeared the staff was exhausted or just didn't want to be there. I know it's a hard industry to work in so I decided to go with the flow and not get frustrated or upset by the lack of service. I had to ask for napkins, silverware, coffee refill, and my biscuit. Once my meal finally arrived I thought ok, this was worth it, everything looked good but it was just so-so. No flavor and fish tasted very strange, I left about 90% of it on my plate.
