The last time I drove past this City Heights address, a Subway sandwich shop occupied the corner suite. Thum SD is a locally owned Cambodian/Laotian eatery with a few dedicated parking spots to the west of the building. The inside had a fair amount of Asian decor reflective of the culture and cuisine. About half a dozen tables were available for seating. I arrived during their final hour of business. It appeared they were getting ready to close early as no other customers were present and clean up was taking place. Four menu screens hung behind the service counter. The far left panel showed the drinks and shaved ice offerings. The middle two screens displayed food items that were available until sold out. These ranged from salads to spring rolls to sausage. Two soup specials made up the far right screen. Luckily everything was still available despite being at the end of the day. I chose the Lao Sausage and the Chicken Glass Noodle Salad for my order. I actually wanted to dine in, but the cashier never asked so the kitchen prepared the food in takeout containers. Two non-spicy sausages stuffed with minced pork and aromatic ingredients like lemongrass and lime leaf were served with sticky rice (my choices) and a spicy dipping sauce. The sausages were very flavorful so I didn't use much sauce. The ball of sticky rice was a bit on the hard side which made it extra chewy. I did find the price to be high as this item cost more than the salad. Shredded chicken, glass noodles, cabbage, bell peppers, carrots, and herbs were the components of my salad. A sweet fish sauce was provided as a dressing which I applied to the mixture. I enjoyed the bright acidic flavor of the salad. The white meat was the perfect protein as it kept the texture on the light side. I gave a 3.5 star rating for my experience at Thum SD.

I've been praying for a Lao/Cambodian place to open up near my neighborhood so I was ecstatic to see that ThumSD is here now! I dropped by to order their Papaya Salad Lao style and oh my goodness... the best I have ever had!! The perfect amount of savoryness from the fish sauce and super limey which is how I love it, and lots of cherry tomatoes. The people taking my order were super nice and I love all the plants in the restaurant, it's a welcoming vibe. I'm excited to come back and try their other menu items, but I'm definitely hooked on their papaya salad...

The food is truly delicious, and the service is excellent. There is a great selection of dishes to choose from. The place is beautiful, with rich culture and art throughout. I highly recommend this place.

The tables well spaced out and even counter seats if you want a quick bite. Ordered one of the best sellers, Nam Khao Tod which was impressively full of flavor with crispy coconut rice, sausage, ginger, onion and scallions, holding off on the peanuts due to food allergies which they graciously accommodated. Served with plenty of lettuce. Our second dish was the Hot Basil with chicken. Very aromatic with fresh basil, onion, peppers and tender chicken, served with steamed rice. Can't wait to go back and try something new along with one of their desserts, which, unfortunately, we didn't have any room for during this visit.

I always order the papaya salad (Lao style) and add vermicelli rice noodles. I have also tried their Khao Poon, Lao Sausages, Curry, and Larb dishes -- all were absolutely perfect as if I were really dining at an auntie's house. Flavors are authentic and dishes are prepared in a way to walk guests down the journey of Lao and Thai cooking. Make sure to not underestimate spice levels for the dishes. Them hot chilli peppers these aunties harvest are not be reckoned with. Bonus, this dine in restaurant is located directly next door to a mini market selling anything you need for cooking Southeast Asian cuisine -- so you can dine and grocery shop. Everyone wins. Nothing felt rushed or basic, it was just really, really good. But what made it even better was the owner. They were so kind and welcoming, like genuinely good energy the whole time. You don't always get that kind of treatment everywhere, and it made the whole experience feel more personal. Overall, I loved it. The food, the vibe, the people--everything was on point. Definitely one of those places I'll keep going back to.

I saw a lot of people picking up to go. Since I was the only here with one other family, service was fast and my server was very nice. She had such a friendly smile. I had to order papaya salad lao style, well, bc its the only way to make papaya salad. Stinky, salty, and potent in aroma and flavor. To me, this is real food. My only disappointment was I asked for spicy level 10, or 11, or 12, and I thought I got a level 1. I thought she misheard me, but I realize my spice tolerance is just over 9000. Haha. The Lao sausage was awesome. Thats the flavor profile I've been craving and it has been quenched today! I really loved this place and its deep flavors. The curry was flavorful and not too spicy. The beef ribs were good as well, just not what we expected and was saucey. The papaya salad was decent. I felt like there was some flavor missing in it. We were both filled at the end of it. Overall not bad, a bit overpriced, and I feel like you can get more bang for your buck at a normal Vietnamese/ Lao restaurant. It was worth a try though!
