I have celiac disease and follow a gluten free diet and was given the gf menu (which i ordered from) but unfortunately I received the dipping sauce for the fresh spring rolls that was not gf ~ the owner realized the mistake and was apologizing and offered me fish sauce to wash it down.... My husband and I visited Than Kieu on our way home from a 4-day stay in London. We were looking for Vietnamese food and thought the reviews sounded pretty good. We were seated immediately after we walked through the door and were given menus. I ordered the curry chicken soup with vermicelli and my husband ordered the saté beef soup. We were impressed by how quickly we were served our meals and how good they looked. The curry chicken soup was delicious with lots of chicken, noodles and potatoes in it. The flavour of the broth was just right. The saté beef soup had plenty of noodles, protein and was topped with some fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. My husband agreed that his broth also tasted great and had the right amount of spice. The washrooms were spotlessly clean and modern and the dining room was also very clean. Best pho I've had in London so far! I've been several times, the service is good and the restaurant is fairly clean. Pho is my go to when I'm craving comfort food or when I'm sick. They've changed the "red bean, mung bean, and jelly with coconut milk over ice" dessert several times over the past 6 years. Most recently I had it Sept 2022 and I won't be getting it again. They now use grass jelly instead of the typical jelly used in this dessert and I find that the texture difference is disappointing. I'd recommend 202 (vermicelli with lemongrass pork and spring rolls), 101, and 102. read more

Mediocre at best... I go a vermicelli meal and a seafood soup. Broth was bland, never had lettuce in a soup before so that was weird and soggy. In the seafood soup we got 2 of each seafood, (shrimp, squid, imitation crab) the large felt small other than the amount of bland broth I got. The vermicelli meal was just Ok. Again, no expectations. Exceeded it! Got Thai peppers with it. Naturally, I needed more. Got several more. I had their combo large pho and grilled chicken bun salad with the ice coffee. It's an average pho price. Price is cheap considering the portion. Taste is ok. I had 2 problems. 1. Service is slow. I had no utensils when the pho was brought to me, and I had to find a server to ask for it. I didn't have any napkins, and had to find them on some counter myself. 2. Wasn't planning on eating here originally, but had to duck in here for shelter from the sudden and extreme snowstorm that occurred today! I ordered a beef flank pho with beef tendon (small sized, whereas my dad ordered the large), my mom got the small bun bo hue, while my sister got a grilled pork and chicken rice. The small portion for me was just fine and perfectly filling, but my mom found hers to be overly small. Overall, I thought that the vermicelli was perfectly cooked to be al dente, but the beef flank was very roughly cut and very tough/rough as well. The broth was full of MSG flavour, causing me to be extremely thirsty afterwards, and I was also very disappointed by the fact that the advertised tendon ended up being a measly one small piece. My sister thought that her rice was a bit dry, and it was evident that her meat was very fatty - in fact, there were massive chunks of pork and chicken fat. She found the rice dish just okay, but not impressive by any means. I think that the best dish was my mom's bun hue. Unlike the typical dish that we're used to, this particular restaurant served it only with beef shank (none of the different sausage variations and pig blood pudding) and a different type of thinner noodles. We just tried a couple of their stir fried noodle dishes, and they were mediocre. They're good if you prefer a large portion size and don't mind losing out when it comes to the flavour and ingredients. The veg Pad Thai had a simple, non-traditional, orange coloured sauce and very little protein (tofu). It included a small amount of peas and mushrooms as the only vegetables, which is an odd combination for Pad Thai. The seafood fried noodles had more vegetables, but once again very little seafood. The "sauce" was a clear, corn starch substance. There was a generous volume of noodles in both dishes, but it was unsatisfying otherwise. I've heard decent things about their Vietnamese dishes so perhaps it's best to stick to that portion of the menu. read more

A nice enough restaurant at the Highbury/ Huron area, my experience was average at best. My wife and I went in on a Saturday night when they were about 2/3 full (around 8pm). We were shuffled to a cramped table for two and were largely ignored. Other servers were happily schmoozing other (later) customers or were concerned with various Uber Eats pickups (or that kind of thing). We had to flag down a server who brought us our tea, chopsticks and spoons. In what felt like fifteen minutes later, we had our order picked up at our table. No one checked in on us, and we had a struggle to get two iced waters. We ordered four appetizers:: stir fried vegetables with tofu, deep fried wontons, vegetable spring rolls, beef skewer. Our main dishes were two small bowls of beef pho (one for me, one for wife). Like I said, we were largely ignored. Had to get a server to bring us our Sriracha and hoisin sauce as our table didn't have any (though other tables did). We were given our menus and order slip. Menus, for us, were large 500 item laminated papers in curvy hard-to-read font. Nicely organized but a bit overwhelming. Appetizers came out moderately quickly though were disappointing. 1) Stir fried vegetables were mostly bean sprouts with four thinly sliced carrots, two small pieces of broccoli, a couple of mushrooms, and three thinly sliced pieces of tofu. Like something from a Chinese restaurant. Not worth the price. 2) Beef skewer was beef wrapped in seaweed-like leaf. Single skewer. About the size of half my pinky finger. 5 "portions". Barely on any shredded cabbage. Not worth the price. 3) Vegetable spring roll felt like two small spring rolls chopped up to appear more generous in portion size than actually were. Again, barely on any cabbage. Again, not worth the price. 4) Fried wontons. Got a small plate of them. Approximately six in total. Wife wasn't sure if they had shrimp (menu didn't say, and wife has allergy). So I ate them all. Came with small bowl of chili sauce. Decent. Servers, at this point, saw we had many dishes despite small table and hurriedly came over to try and take our appetizer plates even though we were not finished. Table felt cramped and timing of food felt off. I ate quickly knowing our main entrees were coming soon. Entrees came in, even though wife and I had set aside our appetizer dishes aside. They were finally picked up. We ordered pho, and were given a small handful of fresh sprouts, a small halved lime, and two small sprigs of mint to add to our pho. Pho was okay. Lots of rice noodles in bottom of bowl. Seasoning was ok. Typical pho. Meat was about three thin slices of beef and I think I had three half meatballs in mine. Not overly exciting. Portion was generous for small size, but lots of broth. No more interaction with servers for rest of night until we paid. Finished our meal. Went up to till to pay. Was offered a fortune cookie from a drawer full of fortune cookies. We politely declined. Paid. And left. Overall, it was an okay meal out. Wife and I had enjoyed Vietnamese cooking before so we kind of knew what to expect, but would have been a bit more daunting if we didn't know what we wanted. Servers were not overly helpful and seemed more preoccupied than not. Ambiance in the restaurant was a bit on the darker side with average lighting. Busy and felt a bit crowded. The special fried rice and BBQ lemongrass pork appetizer I had here was some of the best I've ever had. It's wonderful that London has great places like this! The service is excellent, the restaurant is kept well clean and the prices are quite reasonable. HUGE portions as well, even if you order the small size. Excellent service too. There was one time my takeout order took a little longer than quoted, but the staff did an excellent job of communicating to me when I would exactly receive my order. This is a great place for students to go to. You don't have to order pho from here - I think anything you get from here is all of high quality. I will definitely be back here again. TK has always been amazing. We were introduced to it several years ago and frequently had our group of 8-10 people lunch there. These last few times we ordered take out (because of COVID), it has been absolutely terrible. The food has been sub par; always burnt, tasteless dishes and just a downright sad amount of toppings. The cuts of meat are becoming grizzlier and they're practically inedible. I found a hair baked into my spring roll this time. Which is why I'm writing the review. I feel like it is also worth mentioning that the service is getting shittier. We had ordered an hour ahead of time to have our take out for 4:45PM. It was my birthday and I hadn't have had TKs in a long time. We get there at 4:45 to pick up our food and are told that it's not ready yet and to wait outside and they would call us. They said it would only take 10 minutes. No problem right? So we wait in the car out front, very very hungry, and at 5:10 we call the store to see if the food is ready yet. Apparently they still are not done and to wait a bit longer. 5:20 rolls around and a woman who had ordered for 5:30 gets her take out and leaves. We eventually got it an hour after our scheduled take out time. I'm very unimpressed and disappointed. Their excuse is "We're busy". We only ordered 2 small dishes. The food is always fresh, the menu is new and has many different dishes that are not a only appealing to a meat lover but also to vegetarians. Pho was incredibly appropriate given the freezing weather outside (we were experiencing our first official snow of the season in London). We had made a reservation earlier as we were a party of 11, and they seated us promptly. However, before we had even received our food, we were asked to move to another table inside the restaurant. It was a bit strange as we were given no explanation, but the back area was cozy with dimmer lighting and a long booth against the wall, so it wasn't a big deal. I ordered the 101 - a hearty pho with various types of beef - in a size small. The meat was especially tasty. You have the option of small, large, or extra-large, but all the sizes are quite generous. They accidentally mixed up mine and my friend's orders at the beginning, but I believe it was a newer waiter who was just getting a hang of things. Otherwise, the employees are all very friendly and welcoming, and service was quite fast. I would definitely recommend driving here, as I can't imagine how long it would take via LTC. This is probably the best vietnamese place in all of London! There are so many excellent dishes to choose from and I'm sure there is something there you will love! From the Pho to the Pad Thai, and the little more daring Curry Chicken, it all taste's amazing! Just don't judge a book by it's cover, the outside and even the inside of the restaurant aren't the most visually appealing, but I guarantee you that the taste of the food much outweighs the looks of the restaurant! Chu and the staff are super friendly, and your food is made to order and usually very quickly, In other words the service is excellent! The portions are massive as well and I'm sure you'll leave full and if not with some to take home as well. The price is also excellent, and there are no dishes over $10. I would highly recommend the Pad Thai (401), Curry Chicken (216), and the Black Bean Chicken (131), There is also an amazing meat dish that I forget the number of but it's so good as well! Wow. I rarely get to northeast London, but needed to meet in the area and chose to have lunch at Thuan Kieu. Amazing. The prices were great and the food was delicious. The spring rolls are the best I've had in London and the vegetarian vermicelli was incredible. I was there at lunchtime, on a Wednesday in July and the place was packed, which speaks to the popularity. While I would not typically choose a restaurant in a strip mall, I'm happy to have discovered Thuan Kieu which will now be in my rotation of favourite city cuisine, despite its location not being convenient for me. **EDIT** I downgraded my review from 5 to 4 stars after my third visit in three weeks. Some friends and I decided to try a different place for some vermicelli tonight and we chose Thuan Kieu. I really like the atmosphere of the restaurant, we were happily greeted and offered hand sanitizer or hand lotion which was nice! Our server was so wonderful (everyone who helped us tonight had a happy attitude and were all very helpful). She suggested the Chinese beer which was really yummy. Sadly her shift was over after she took our order and she didnt say goodbye! =( My friend was glad our server suggested the small pad thai because it was quite a large dish! Our spring rolls were rolled tightly and very crisp and fresh. The vermicelli had a ton of noodles and the pork belly was a bit grittier than I am used to but it tasted very good and had lots left over. I wish there was a bit more of the other toppings in it since there was so much noodle but it wasnt a huge deal. All in all, I really like this restaurant, the decor, the food, and the staff. Discovered this restaurant from my boyfriend, but it turned out to be owned my longtime friend's cousins family! This is a non-biased review, I promise! When I came here with my friend, we were welcomed in within a reasonable amount of time and seated. Our waitress was very friendly and gave us tea immediately. We had to wait a bit for our waitress to come back and take our order even though it wasn't that busy. Then we waited even more (~20 minutes) to get our food (bbq pork + spring roll vermicelli bowl and 101 pho)! We had ordered drinks (3 coloured drink + viet coffee) and it didn't even come until our food came at the same time. I would have preferred to have those drinks come first rather than drinking it at the same time while eating pho. The food was delicious, simply just really delicious. The portions are very filling, even for a small pho. We really enjoyed our drinks as well. The total only came up to about $30 w/ tips which is not too bad for two people. This place is much more tastier and authentic than BenThanh, but its also $1-2 more expensive (worth it!!!). Since London doesn't have too many Viet-Thai restaurants, this one would be the best for a cheap and tasty meal. The interior is also modern and nice! I have been to Thuan Kieu before, and again, and again and of course I went recently with the Yelp International Supper Club for our taste of Vietnamese food, and what a great choice this was. This was our biggest outing yet, with I believe about 16 of us. I was running a bit late because of work, but as soon as we arrived, I saw my table and sat down right away. Our server came around a took our drink orders, and then around again to take our actual orders. But they do give you an order sheet to write down which items you want and then take that. It's very simple and makes it easy to order. The menu has a huge selection of items, and although I went with the Pad Thai, looking around our table, the other items that everyone ordered also looked delicious. We started off with an appetizer or fresh veggie spring rolls, and shrimp deep fried won-tons for my boyfriend. The spring rolls are one of my favourites to order and always taste amazing with the peanut dipping sauce. The won-tons were hot and had a tasty sweet and sour sauce paired with them, and there was enough to share with everyone. Our meal had arrived and I ordered the mild vegetarian Pad Thai, and it was delicious, full of flavour and a huge portion. I was unable to finish all of it, but lucky enough to pack it up and take it home with me for my next day meal. The food came out hot, and all together. My boyfriend got the Pad Thai fried rice with shrimp and tofu, he loved it and also was unable to finish it because of the big portion size. Polite staff but food was sent out at different times and they never asked whether the food was okay. I ordered Hue's style soup with beef and vermicelli. My food came out first, even though other locations that carry bun bo hue typically have a long wait because it is authentic broth and not powder. To start, the soup was basically Chinese spicy sauce powder/something disguised as Vietnamese food. Their beef tasted like freezer burn and to top it all off, the bottom of the bowl was full of shredded iceberg lettuce. Why. If the staff at least checked on our meals and asked if the food was okay, this review would receive 2 stars. 3.5 stars. I haven't visited this place for a year, so I was really excited to visit today for lunch. The first thing I noticed was how crowded the restaurant was, but we didn't wait long. Another thing I realized is that they've changed the menu and of course, the prices have increased. I ordered a rice dish with lemongrass chicken and pork chop. The food took longer than usual to arrive, which was fine since they were so busy. But once my food arrived, it was tasty but it wasn't as good as I expected. I was disappointed to say the least that they increased prices, but decreased food quality. A few of the things that consistently occur at Thuan Kieu include: 1) The food never comes out all at once for a table. It's always scattered; one person will get their meal in 3 minutes after ordering, and 20 minutes later, the next person gets their food. This is annoying because the first person that gets their food could either wait and let their food go cold, or awkwardly eat while everyone else watches. 2) The staff system is not a waiter system, as in many people will serve each table. This makes it difficult to ask for refills, ask for the bill, or to pay since there's no centre staff. 3) Although the staff are polite, they're never really there for you when you need something. They're very busy, but I wish we could get checked on ever now and then, and have someone come and refill water regularly. For example, today, after finishing our meals, a staff member asked if the food as okay as she was taking away the dirty plates. It would've made a lot more sense to have someone check on us a few minutes after receiving our food, not half an hour later. I still like Thuan Kieu, but I must admit I don't love it as much as I used to. Would I still recommend Thuan Kieu? Yes, but not as much anymore. read more

From the moment we walked in to when we left the restaurant, the customer service was impeccable. I've been here a handful of times and the amazing customer service has been consistent every visit. Cost of the food is fair (~$10 per person if you order one dish). The portions are small compared to my favourite pho places in Toronto, however, it still fills my belly up. Both my boyfriend and I enjoy their soup noodles, the broth is delicious! I personally enjoy the beef noodle but the pad Thai isn't half bad either. Over the last two years, this place has become a staple whenever I want to go out for cheap, fresh, and tasty eats. Some things I definitely recommend on the menu: BBQ beef fresh rolls. We get these as the healthier options to spring rolls. They are consistently crunchy, meaty, and so delicious. Curry chicken with rice. This is one of my favourite things on the menu. The portion is generous, and the spice is just right. Something to keep in mind is that the price between the small and large is quite minimal. I always order the large. However, keep in mind that the rice portion doesn't increase with the size, so you may want to get two. I often order it with the one portion of rice, and take the leftovers home and make some more rice. Makes a perfect lunch the next day. Rice with chicken and pork chop. This is my boyfriend's go to dish. It's flavourful, plentiful, and is grilled, so represents some form of healthy. Special fried rice. One of the best I've ever had, and I'm from Toronto, so that's saying something. Cantonese chow mein. This is the only place I've been able to find this dish outside of Hakka restaurants in Scarborough. The perfect balance of crispy, tender, and succulent. Vegetables with cashews. This is a recent new favourite. It's an extremely filling version, extremely tasty. I'll be honest I've only once ever tried the pho again and it's the the sliced beef one. No weird things like the special beef one. It was good, not great, so we normally stick to the non pho options.
