The King's Head is the pick of the bunch. It is privately owned, and run by friendly and welcoming young staff. Whilst not the smartest or most chic establishment in town, it is certainly the quirkiest, with an astonishing array of artefacts, accumulated down the years, adorning its walls and shelfs. A labyrinth of little bars, it has comfortable sitting-room type furniture and you can relax on a sofa whilst enjoying your drink. It has en-suite rooms, its own car park, and the Chef, Jose Casas, cooks meals that are a lot more than your average pub grub. Local meat and fish feature on his menus, and you need to be very hungry if you order his 'specials'. A former Gwent Pub of the Year winner, The Kings has a choice of real ales, and a very large range of wines and spirits. An excellent spot to stop and slake your thirst (just 1 mile off the M50-A449 route), or to use as a base if touring the area.

I would give them a five but they do need to do some painting and lots of updating in the rooms. The rooms were clean but need more power plugs, a new splash of paint, definitely new bathrooms with a new look, and they would do well to have split air conditioning in each of the rooms. The corridors could do with new paint, better lighting and new carpets of tiled flooring. Improvements would also allow them to up the price of the rooms. I do understand that you don't want to lose the old quaintness but you still need to stay with the clientele. I would definitely stay here again but they do need those updates, and it would certainly warrant a higher price.

The walls are adorned with mismatched plates and the fireplace is guarded my porcelain dogs. The floorboards creaky, some of the tables are wonky - and I've never felt more at home in a pub. The staff are wonderful too. Not being a beer drinker myself, my Dad has said that they serve the best Bass bitter around. Their food is top notch. I could easily recommend everything on the menu! The steaks put dedicated steak houses to shame and the lasagne is delicious. Even 'simpler' dishes like ham egg and chips are wonderful. Parking isn't usually a problem as there is a small cobbled car park opposite and parking in teh surrounding sides streets. Best to book ahead and check their opening hours to avoid disappointment.
