The entire trail is actually 33 miles long. I didn't walk all of it, not even close, but I got enough of a flavor on my last wintry morning in Pittsburgh when I walked the sections on the North Shore and around Point State Park. It's a fully paved, ten-foot wide promenade that follows both banks of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, which unite to form the Ohio River. Except for the occasional jogger, there was barely a soul out when I was walking because the weather was bitterly cold. At the same time, the scenic views were constant and unique to the area. Near the PNC park, The 24-mile-long path connects the downtown area to the surrounding neighborhoods and makes it easy for people to travel across the city without getting in a car or on a bus. it lines the banks of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio waterways of course, we can't cover it all on foot, we just explored the area near PNC park. when we were including the Duquesne cable car, we could see this trail surrounding many neighborhoods. perfect scenic recreation spot: You'll find people walking, running, biking, and rollerblading down the trail nearly every day. the trail is well-groomed and consistently cleaned. There are several bathrooms, parking areas, and water fountains along the trail. read more

Ride on it weekly to or from town. Rest stop is clean with picnic benches and a pleasant atmosphere. Water pumps would be the only thing I would recommend. This location is the 26th-Street / Portal-Place pedestrian access point to the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, a 24-mile or so riverside trackside hiking and biking trail, mostly paved with some gravel sections. Farther southeast, there are many places to access the trail without crossing railroad tracks. This access has no parking. It's about 500-feet north of a couple of paid self-parking garages at 26th St and Sidney St, and about the same distance west of a couple of well known restaurants with bars, with others nearby around the Southside Works area. The Trail is quite active, varying by time and day. We saw a bald eagle over the Monongahela River southeast of here! This part of The Trail is probably fine into the evening. We set our limit by the nearby restaurants' hours :-), until 10pm Sun-Tue, until midnight or 1am Thu-Sat, more or less. read more

This is an amazing trail system. The parts on the North Shore near the stadiums are really nice and open. I've run north past the casino and science museum once and some parts of that trail are a little isolated. Also a lot of gnats! On the other side of the river, the section from Smithfield Bridge to Hot Metal Bridge is pretty nice, but again, there are some sketchy sections where you are very isolated and it looks like some people live there by the river. On the Eliza Furnace portion between Hot Metal Bridge and 2nd Avenue, there are some portions where you are close to the highway so the noise and the fumes are not awesome but it's great that this trail exists. You can literally run miles and miles along the rivers in Pittsburgh, across bridges and through the heart of the city. The city is lucky to have such a wonderful asset and I try to run these trails whenever I'm in town. read more

Visiting the trail has become one of my favorite things to do in the burg. It does not matter which season either. Walking on the trail really makes my day!! Along the river yet it is so peaceful I love listening to the water hit the shoreline. I dont have a favorite entry way .. Haven't been on a bike in years. My husband and youngest daughter convinced me to go with them - promising a low-key ride. It was wonderful! Great views! Lots of shade! Very flat. You have to watch when passing by other people, bikes, dogs, children. Some spots can get congested. Lots of places to start and parking. Lots of places to stop as well to sit on a bench and have a snack. Paved the whole way that we went. read more

What a fabulous trail that runs along the rivers. Such a peaceful and pleasant way to walk or bike while enjoying the beautiful sites the city has to offer. Very picturesque for a walk, run or bike. I try to spend a little time here each year just to stroll and watch the river traffic go by. I find it very relaxing compared to the busy streets all around it. The traffic is slower, the people passing you by are much nicer and there can be allot to see. The city has done a nice job adding flowers in spots and keeping it clean. Make it a fun day and rent a bike for a pleasant ride. read more

Love this trail! I recently started training for a marathon, and I use this trail for many of my mid-length runs. I like that it's scenic and flat, and it's usually not too crowded. I also love that there's multiple small parking lots along the trail so that you can easily get from your car to the trail. I knocked off one star because I avoid this trail at off-hours because parts of it can be a little sketchy (I don't like to run here in the early mornings when it's not totally daylight, for example). But it's great in daylight and also with friends! read more

You know, I felt sorry for all the poor suckers who had to work today. I mean here it was, the last nice day in October (and possibly for all of 2012) and I had the day off. What, am I supposed to do housework on a beautiful, 75F degree like today? So I donned my bike gear and took my road bike out for probably the last time this season. As I've mentioned before, the Three Rivers Heritage Trail System is the collective name for several trails including the Eliza Furnace Trail, the South Side Trail, and the North Shore Trail. I was determined to ride at least a portion of each. I hit the road, working my way from Squirrel Hill thru Schenley Park before heading down via the Panther Hollow and Junction Hollow Trails towards Irvine Street and Greenfield Avenue. I picked up the Eliza Furnace Trail, which now extends between Downtown and Hazelwood. I rode on this segment for less than a mile before veering off onto the Hot Metal Bridge. The Hot Metal Bridge connects with South Side Trail, which will one day be linked up with the Great Allegheny Passage Trail. The South Side Trail extends west to Station Square, paralleling the Monongahela River on one side and the CSX Rail Line on the other. Station Square itself is a good place to stop and take a break. The South Side Trail goes past the Gateway Clipper Fleet and the (insert Nom Du Jour) Amphitheater. Here I began the climb up to Fort Pitt Bridge and over to the North Shore. After winding around the North Shore, I reached the west end of the trail system at Westhall Street. Heading east again, I passed Heinz Field and PNC Park. Once past the North Shore area, I noticed the trail became much less used. It actually made for a more peaceful ride along the Allegheny River. The North Shore Trail then crosses over to Herr's Island and I rode in a loop around the island, past the tennis courts and Washington's Landing. I took another short break before leaving the island and heading back Downtown. Sure I've covered all of this ground before, but it was a great way to close out the 2012 bike riding season. I have run and rode bikes along this trail and overall it is very nice. The trail is well maintained as far as I have seen with clear pathways and no overgrowth. There are some homeless people's belongings and a tent or two at some places on the trail but that certainly doesn't bother me. There is usually a good mix of people around which has always kept me from feeling unsafe. One thing that sucks is that during certain times of the year there can be some hoards of gnats right at face level...I've definitely swallowed a bug once or twice. I usually park at the South Side riverfront park that can be accessed from south 18th street. There is plenty of parking, a few picnic tables, and port-a-potties there. Very happy to have this trail in Pittsburgh overall. read more

I absolutely love this trail, and run on it at least once a week and more during the summer. I pick it up in Millvale, and typically run to the West End Bridge and back. It is a beautiful run, spending most time along the Allegheny River and then passing by the stadiums and the Ohio River. Even when it is a nice day and lots of people are out running, biking, and walking, the trail is wide enough for all to share. My husband uses it for biking (he hates running) and finds it equally as enjoyable. You can take a detour through Washington's Landing, or cross one of the bridges to get to Point State Park for a run around the fountain. Overall a lovely place to run and easy to get in a long distance run! read more
