I scheduled appointments for my husband and I 2 weeks ahead of time on Zocdoc. Filled out paperwork, confirmed, and everything. I called to let them know I was running 5 minutes late and they had no idea we had appointments and said they don't know when they're booked on ZocDoc unless you call them. They then let me know that they actually don't take my insurance even though on Zocdoc they say they do. I was trying to Tello their really rude receptionist that they should really not be using Zocdoc if they don't aren't on top of their presence there and she kept interrupting me and seemingly accused me of trying to get my care covered without insurance or something? If she would have just quit interrupting me and not just put me on hold/transferred me to her manager's voicemail every two seconds, then maybe they could have benefited from my feedback. Literally one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a Dr. Run from this horribly unprofessional and disorganized mess of a business. read more

Office staff is horrible! Answer the phone and immediately put me on hold for twenty minutes and than disconnect the call! This happened 3 times! So i already know not to bother making first appointment! This is the first hint about this business. Poor customer service! read more

Dr. John does not check his emergency messages after hours. He performed cataract surgery on my mom on a Friday, and over the course of Monday her vision greatly deteriorated to only light perception. We called Monday afternoon/evening and got no response. It turns out the eye became infected and the best visual outcome is immediate treatment. Dr. John's office cannot be relied upon in an emergency. I'm sure he's fine for an unremarkable cataract surgery, but my mom has lost vision in that eye, and quicker action could have possibly saved it. read more

Expect to wait an average of 2 hours per visit even though visit time is confirmed 30 minutes prior to appointment time. Dr. John spends on average 1 minute and 58 seconds per patient ( I timed him). I would give 0 stars if I could. read more

Most unprofessional doctor's office I have ever seen and that is saying a lot. Patients beware! Don't fall for the medals, articles, and newspapers clippings litter every wall space available. This doctor might be useful IF you had steel stuck in your eye and needed emergency surgery. But other than that, he has zero business taking people's money as a general eye doctor. I gave him several chances, and he failed me...every time. My first appointment I showed up early to, and after my waiting for an hour PAST my scheduled time...I was notified that he wouldn't be coming in due to something unforeseen. OK...I'll come back. My second time there, his (horrible) staff starts letting people into the exam rooms despite my being there an hour before them! I call them out, they get lippy with me, then basically admit they made a mistake. I finally get in to see this guy, and he tells me I have 20/20 vision.....which I know is bull cause I can't see my hand in front of my face. Totally bum rushes me out. He has an assembly line practice. I go back months later for an ongoing eye issue, and he starts having me come back repeatedly for eye plug insertions. Said plugs then cause me a major eye infection, which he of course denies, and I have to go elsewhere. My new eye doctor has basically admitted this guy caused me unwarranted grief and an eye issue which could be very dangerous, and gets my eyes back on track. A year later, I bump into a neighbor who turns out has been seeing Dr. John for the SAME issue and also got the SAME eye infection from him due to plug insertion. This guy literally does not give a damn about the patient. Waited in the waiting room for about 2 hours while listening to his wife verbally abusing the secretaries. Then, when i finally got called in the waiting room, the doctor wouldnt even listen to anything I said and just dismissed them. His entire exam took 3 minutes and then he rushed me out and ignored me trying to tell him whats actually wrong with my eyes. The receptionist either has to be the Dr's wife or mother, because she is the rudest person I've ever had to deal with. One lady was very polite and professional and was being bullied by the wife or mother. Is was hard to watch as I know personally how it feels to be bullied. The office is a bit ran down, rude receptionist spent most of her time fixing food to eat, constantly walking past my seat which each time she bumped me and never once ask to be excused. Horrible place and if my loved one didn't need the Dr's help I would never go back to location even though the dr is said to be the best. read more

PATIENT BEWARE!!!! Run as fast as you can from this physician and his office staff! My experience with them has been excruciating! I have never written a negative review before and I also work in healthcare so I am very aware that things can sometimes go astray. However, it is how you handle these situations that determines your quality as a provider. I have also waited to write this review and have given Dr. John and his office staff multiple opportunities to address my concerns. All to no avail They have barely responded. If my review saves 1 patient, then all this was worth it. My experience started in May of 2017. I went to see Dr. John in his Tinley office. I was advised to have a simple procedure similar to Lasik. Only 4 days recovery no need to worry about pain measures etc... I travel extensively for work so I needed to plan around this. We looked ahead and scheduled the surgery date for 4 weeks ahead to plan accordingly. I asked multiple times for insurance confirmation. This should have been a red flag! Every time I called the office I went to a voice mail with no return call. I explained on the voice mail I was calling to confirm insurance benefits. No call. Then I finally got ahold of someone in the office staff who told me, "Please don't worry we confirm everything closer to the surgery date." I explained I work in healthcare and understand how these things can go astray and that I would like to confirm benefits. I called the insurance myself, but I needed the procedure code which this lady said she didn't know but would call me back with it so I could call myself and get it confirmed. She never called back and again I went to numerous voice mail messages. Two days before the surgery they call with a 9am surgery time. Great! The day before the surgery at 11am they call to tell me that there is a problem with my insurance covering the surgical site and we need to reschedule. First of all, I have 2 insurances so how can this be and what is each covering? The office assistant then explains they didn't know about the other insurance? Well, I gave all the info and you took copies of this over 4 weeks ago. She was extremely rude and just stated," well sometimes these things happen." Again, it should have been a red flag but I felt desperate and could not rearrange my work schedule so I went into turbo mode to get everything straightened out. Bottom line it was going to cost my $1,000 more to have it at an out of network surgical site or I would have to postpone for another few months. I elected to pay the additional money to not have it disrupt my job. Then the next day all hell broke loose. I went in for this procedure and as soon as I came out I explained I had pain. My eye was all bandaged and NO ONE thought it would be a good idea to take it off to see if something was going wrong. They sent me home with a prescription of Motrin. Within 4 hours I was in agony. I called the office again at 4pm on a Wednesday evening to only get a voice mail. After no call back ( No surprises there) I went to the Emergency Room. Where the ER doctor continued to call all night with no response from Dr. John or his staff. The ER doctors didn't want to make it worse and needed to know things from Dr. John. Dr. John finally called at 8 am the following morning to only say that I had a follow up appointment for him in his office at 11:30 and to come in then. Seriously???? I am in the hospital on IV pain medication. So anyway I went in for him to take out the covering contact that had slipped off in surgery and floating around in my eye. After he did that I still continued to experience problems and having immense pain. I couldn't even open my eyes. I went back a few days later for him only to not numb my eye totally before removing my stitches. Again immense pain. I ran out of his office and went immediately to Rush Hospital where their cornea specialists have been wonderful getting me back on my feet. I should have gone there from the start! Long story short, I have spent over $2,000 out of pocket and over 2 weeks off work, many hours of frustration and aggravation, and my vision is worse than it was when I first went to Dr. John. Its a complete sham. This dr essentially just wants your money. I made an appointment and upon arrival, discovered they were closed. I called and was let in to reschedule for later that day. Upon my second time going, i enter a PACKED waiting room. Okay fine, resigned myself to the fact i would be there forever. The office itself it dilapidated. I noticed as i was called back for the basic exam and history. Went back to the waiting room and sat for another 45 minutes. Yay! I get to see the doctor, who specializes in cornea surgery (important fact as i have a cornea disease hence why i selected him). He spent literally one minute with me. He looked at my eyes and said "id like to see you back in a month". I asked about my disease and that i need to be fitted for special contacts - they dont do it there. A cornea specialist does not accommodate the needs of someone with a cornea disease. Thats when i knew the whole thing is a sham. You can also tell the money goes directly into his pocket as opposed to updating his practice. Everything about the office was dilapidated. I should have looked at reviews before i booked appt. I wish I could give 0 stars. This has nothing to do with the quality of the doctor (whom I never saw), it has to do with the disorganization of the business, and hence my major frustration. I made an appointment online through ZocDoc and got there at the scheduled time, only to find out they had no record of the appointment, AND they didn't take my insurance (which they would have seen had they checked my appointment). What a waste of a 45min car drive and a vacation day. They told me they were training new people and that's why they didn't know about my appointment. Horrible experience at Thomas John Vision Institute. It does not deserve this name. The entire experience was unprofessional and horrible. The so-called eye exam was incomplete especially compared to other eye exams I received in the past. It was unsanitary, there were no tissues used on the eye equipment. When I walked in, a customer was screaming about his care and demanding that his insurance company not be billed. After receiving my care, I understand why. I felt so sorry for the patients who did know know any better. This office should be put out of business. Another woman walked out saying, "I don't like this office." read more

I just had an appointment with this doctor and have been seeing him for over a decade. I understand why his reviews are so terrible. The real problem in that office is the doctor and the wretched terrible and unprofessional woman (she must be a relative or a lover) that he lets run around the office screaming at people. I am not sure what her title is, but she talks so loudly I can hear her yell on the phone or make personal calls. The rest of his office staff usually never stays long enough to get to know who any of them are. There are 2 employees that have been there a while: the other doctor Abdul and the girl with the long blonde hair, Lauren and they are nice. Abdul is nice and explains a lot of things to you. You can see that Abdul does a lot for the doctor. Lauren knows what she is doing, seems smart and efficiently runs the office, which is not easy because I usually see her working alone, and he sees ALOT of patients. I was impressed with her professionalism, but she is also very personable. I was about to switch doctors over the summer because I was fed up with everything at that office but when I came to get my records and saw Lauren was back with his office, I decided to stay because you can really see how much she cares for her patients and how hard she works. She goes above and beyond to deliver for both the doctor and patients, making up for what Dr. John and that other woman lack. I was talking to other patients while waiting to be seen (and we all seem to agree) we are still trying to figure out how she does it all. Since they probably get crappy (if any) Christmas bonuses, I will be bringing Abdul and Lauren something special this holiday season for the wonderful care those 2 have gone out of their way to provide to myself and my husband. Those two are the only bright spots in a really gloomy office. The building is old and falling apart, the office needs updating because the paint and carpets are atrocious. There is hardly enough parking. It is a very depressing establishment. read more
