After hearing positive feedback from some of her previous associates through online networking, I had actually reached out to her with interest over a year prior to joining her practice. The stars aligned just when I was struggling from burnout in a public health setting. Dr. Kwan is warm, genuine, empathetic, and knowledgeable. I appreciate the thoughtful ways in which she inquires, draws connections, and reflects her understanding. More than just demonstrating her keen listening, but also her astuteness. She has depth and breadth of experience, not only in clinical practice and current trends in mental health and society, but also in the business and ethical aspects of private practice. I think it's important to mention that she provides an ethical compensation structure, which not all private practices engage in. I feel privileged in having Dr. Kwan's clinical and professional guidance as I navigate the transition to private practice!

Over the course of that year, Esther truly helped me gain back the self-confidence and self-respect that I had lost. She also helped me see the origin of many of my actions and behaviors that contributed to my problems and develop healthier and more productive responses to anxiety. Esther would start our sessions with a discussion of my prior week and what was troubling me, and give both insights and helpful suggestions for deciding on the path forward. After that, we usually worked on getting to the root causes of my anxiety or exercises to immediately provide some relief (many of which I could then use on my own). As I regained my self-confidence, the focus shifted to everything from work stresses to the most effective ways for me to reach my goals for the future. I am leaving therapy in such a better place than I started, and I couldn't thank Esther enough for the compassion, strength, and knowledge that she showed me. I highly recommend her for anyone going through a tough time in their lives, or just anyone who wants to get some great techniques and guidance towards achieving their goals!

It's been 11 years since the last time I wrote a review. What could possibly inspire me to want to…read morewrite a review after such a long hiatus? One word: therapy. I still remember the day I reached out to Esther requesting for her psychotherapy service. I had just ordered all these self-help books via Amazon that were piling up on my nightstand, but my mind was all over the place and I couldn't find a way to focus on where to begin. If you googled the phrase "woe is me", the top result would probably be a photo of me. I needed someone to help navigate me through my anxious thoughts, someone to provide me with the right tools that would let me better articulate my feelings, someone to boost my confidence, but most importantly someone to just help me get a grip on my entire mental wellbeing. Fortunately shortly after reaching out to Esther, she was able to take me in. I remember feeling wary coming into our first session. I had worked with a few other therapists prior to her, but I didn't feel like I got to where I needed to be with them. I remember during that very first session I was experiencing so much anxiety and overthinking so many events in my life. The simple question of "how are you doing/what is going on in your life?" sent me into a spiral and I remember just crying and pouring out so many bottled up emotions. By the end of our first session, we practiced a cognitive diffusion exercise together and I remember immediately feeling a sense of relief. I felt so much more hopeful than at the beginning of our session and that if I gave it more time I could overcome the mental obstacles that were holding me back. What really solidified my decision to stick with Esther was her hands on approach. With other therapists, we would have a full session of chatting, maybe do an exercise or two, and then pick up again the following week with nothing to hold me accountable with what we practiced. But with Esther, she would assign me homework that would consist of more than just reading. Her assignments would really challenge me to get out of my scared little comfort zone. Then the following week she would always follow up to make sure I really completed that homework. Six months later of consistent therapy with Esther, I can confidently say I am in a much better head space. She's provided me with so many tools that really helped build my confidence and foster a better relationship with myself through emphasizing the importance of self care and just really speaking more kindly to myself. It sounds so simple, but it honestly is a lot of work. I'm so glad I got through it with Esther. She has such a kind, compassionate, and most importantly a nonjudgmental demeanor. I always felt safe during our sessions and that I could speak my mind no matter how silly I thought I might sound. She really helped boost my confidence and made me believe in myself and that under all this "woe is me" there truly is an amazing lovable confident person.

I was looking for a sense of community and a way to feel I was contributing with purpose and not just floating through life. I had done a career coaching seminar with some success, but I was looking for something deeper, but didn't think traditional therapy was the answer. While searching for life coaches on Yelp, I found Abigail. After reading her website I was really excited. She had the perfect blend of education in many modalities and lived experience while also incorporating etheric, astral, mental and causal energy practices. While I don't consider myself a follower or of any of the major religions (i.e. Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.), I was raised with Buddhism and Hinduism in my house, so I consider myself spiritual and can't deny their influences on who I am. In my sessions with Abigail we talk about how things are going, how I'd like things to be, how they are going to get done and what's standing in the way. She gives me exercises to spark inspiration and to keep me on track. She's there as a sounding board, idea generator and cheerleader, but she also holds me accountable to get the work done. She keeps the whole body (physical, mental, spiritual) in mind in her practice. We talk about the past, present and future, but we also talk about exercise, vitamin deficiencies and spirit guides. Our sessions always leave me feeling inspired, listened to, cared about and ready to charge into the next day and weeks with purpose and vigor. Working with Abigail doesn't end with a session. She's there for you if you need anything outside of a session, she offers wonderful experiences like Winter Solstice Ceremonies and she sends me inspirational emails with links to books and TED talks to keep me on track, curious and motivated. With Abigail you are able to tap into uncharted areas of who you are. You get to try new things out. She gives you the tools, and you see where you want to run. While she would say it was no accident I found her, I'm grateful I did. I consider my work with Abigail to be an investment in myself, to better myself, which in turn, hopefully, inspires those around me.

I leveraged her support again about 4 years ago while I was in a different set of struggles, and it brought me to a brighter place. Now I am in a position of needing to make some incredibly positive changes, and there's no one I would trust more to help me achieve what she has helped me understand is possible. She teaches lessons of caring for myself in ways that really resonate. When I think of typical support for mental health, it's so sterile and disconnected. But with Abigail, I feel like I'm more in tune with the world instead of alone in my own head. I see myself as part of a greater whole, and feel inspired to connect with both myself and my loved ones in meaningful ways. She doesn't hide her humanity to help those under her care, but lets it shine forth and inspire. I highly recommend those in need of guidance and support to connect with Abigail.
