I was fortunate that there was an opening to see him the following week. The office is quaint and cozy. I was checked in by the nice lady at the front counter. Wait room was small and every chair was filled. Took about 30 minutes to be called into one of the exam rooms. Another 15 minutes before the doctor came in. Dr. Thomas D Nelson is one Cool doctor! He immediately made me feel at ease. He took his time to answer all my questions and concerns. It was worth the wait. Been feeling much better since he took care of my foot issues. Funny guy, who talks a mile a minute. He might seem a little goofy, but this guy knows what he's talking about. Also, he actually spends TIME with you, instead of trying to shoo you out the door like most practitioners. He will relate to you, and also order tests to get to the bottom of any pain or issues. My only issue was that he did interrupt me on multiple occasions without listening to everything I had to say. Yes, he did seem to read my mind so I didn't necessarily HAVE to finish my sentence, but all the same, it's a bit disconcerting. A great example of how helpful he is: I saw him on Wednesday for bad left foot pain. I had a half-marathon on Sunday. That day, I had labs ordered; by Thursday night, I had two stat MRIs done on my ankle and foot. By Friday, we had the results back- a bone contusion and mild tendinosis. Definitely something to be careful with, but not a fracture... so I was cleared to do the half-marathon! :) read more

It seems a month has passed since I've visted and let me tell you my toe healed from my ingrown. So far i havent felt any pain nor see any ingrown trying to grow. This is not a review for the doctor this is a review for the receptionist/office manager. She is very rude. She is not sympathetic and cuts people off on the phone. She hung up on me! Very unprofessional. This doctor's office sent me to collections for an injection I didn't receive on a day I can prove I was 2.5 hours away. I tried explaining it to her and she said she had my signature and it matched my signature. This was after calling 3 different times and her saying that since I'm sent to collections my file is sealed. She told me It could be unsealed and Information could be given to me after 48 hours. I called on a Wednesday and she didn't call me as promised. I called back on Tuesday the following week and she was again rude and again said it was sealed. She told me to talk to the insurance. I don't have that insurance anymore. I had another job and was already on a different insurance for the time they said I had these so called injections. She then all of a sudden gave me she information from my supposed sealed file and then hung up on me. This is fraud. I reported them(I wanted to work it out w them but she wouldn't let me) and I hope everyone makes sure to check your charges and if you don't go to them then don't...unless he changes receptionists. The doctor I remember (from 5 years ago) being very friendly. It's sad that he has such terrible staff. read more

I have had ingrown toenails (yuck) for 10 years now and have seen two doctors for them. Neither doctors took me seriously and I have lived in pain for 10 years because of it. Most recently, my doctor told me they weren't that bad, soak them and put some cotton underneath the nail. Well after months of trying that and still being in a lot of pain (I couldn't get cotton underneath them because they were so far into my toe), I finally decided to see a podiatrist. I am so glad I chose Dr. Nelson. He just glanced at my toes and said they were badly ingrown all the way down to the base. He drew diagrams and educated me on the anatomy of a normal toe versus my toe and explained why I was in so much pain. He described exactly what he was going to do before he did it and made sure I was comfortable with everything before we started. He numbed me up, cut them out, put que tips with medicine in them for a few minutes and wrapped them up for me. He checked on me several times throughout the procedure and made sure I wasn't in any pain. The whole procedure took about 20 minutes and he took my mind off of it by talking with me about his family, asking questions about my family etc... It really wasn't bad, he eased my fears and I didn't feel a thing after I was numbed. Dr. Nelson is very friendly and knowledgeable. He even said if I ever need them redone he would do it for free! I will definitely go back to him for any other foot problems and I won't be scared next time! read more

I've had an ingrown toenail for almost two months. After reading the other comments I decided to call Dr. Thomas' office and they were able to schedule me in that same day! The Dr. is super friendly and very knowledgeable. He explains exactly what he will be doing very clearly and is willing to answer any concerns you have. The removal of the ingrown took around 10min. Make sure if you have your ingrown removed to ask for the acid treatment on it. That way it will never grow back. My other toe also gets ingrown toenails and I will definitely be going back to have him take care of it next time i get one. This is one of the easiest reviews. I read Yelp reviews prior to making an appointment with a podiatrist for a third opinion. Dr. Nelson talks to you, educates you on what the problem is and how you got there. I very pleased with Dr. Nelson. He said I don't need surgery but a certain exercise to cure the archilles tendonistic. I had to pay out of my pocket to see Dr. Nelson because I have Kaiser. The two doctors at Kaiset. Dr. Hartman and Dr. Ho did not take the time yo review an xray or examine the leg and were quick to be gone. Dr. Ho was condescending and suggested multiple solutions including surgery my choice. This guy needs to be fired. I'm stuck at Kaiser for a year. It's all true what they say about Kaiser. Very few good doctors at Kaiser, the rest are still in school at your expense. I had to pay 5 co-pays($25 each visit) to see Kaiser's podiatrist two times. Go to Dr. Nelson. By the way, Dr. Nelson receptionist said they get a lot of Kaiser patients, who are paying out of pocket to see him. read more

He took out an ingrown toenail and explained to me how i got it by drawing a diagram he also gave me a free apt to show me how to cut my nails properly. I had two ingrown toenails removed some another foot doctor here in Bakersfield because Dr. Nelson couldn't see me for 3 weeks. I ended up going to Dr. Nelson after the ingrown nails were removed as they were still hurting. Turns out, pieces of the nail were left in the nail bed and Dr. Nelson removed them. I will NEVER EVER EVER go to another foot doctor again!! Dr. Nelson always takes him time to explain everything to me and what the best course of action will be.
