I saw Dr. Chew for the first time about a month ago, and after just the first session I felt immensely better. I had an arthritic hip, and was trying to avoid (or forestall) hip-replacement surgery. Dr. Chew's vast knowledge of how the body works worked in my favor. He worked not only on widening the range of motion of the hip, but also worked on the muscles in the legs and back that affect the hip as well. In addition, he is one of the nicest people I have had as a health practitioner. Friendly, warm, gracious, generous. I felt immediately at ease with him. And not to overlook the fact that--in this day of technology and machinery-dependence--he did 99% of the chiropractic work on me with his own hands (other than about 5 minutes with some kind of a roller). I've had chronic pain in my low back for years. I started seeing Tom about 6 months ago, and not long after that, the pain was gone. Cures from chiropractic treatments take time, but if the treatment is right, the idea is that the cure will last. I see Tom for my adjustment every 3 weeks, and I appreciate his willingness to work with my schedule. Tom's approach is a whole-mind-body approach. Last time I was at his office, he asked me what hurts, anywhere on my body, then asked me what hurts the most (since I have several areas of pain). And even though it wasn't my back, he shifted his attention to my other body parts to see how he could help. As most of you know, if you're reading this post, when we have pain in one part of our body, it's often because of a problem in another. Tom understands this. Beginning about a year ago, I developed pains in my neck, my shoulders, and my upper legs - in addition to my lower back. Let me start off by saying I've seen several chiropractors over the years. Some relied a lot on placebo effects (e.g. essential oils, positive thoughts etc). Some treated me like a wallet (in and out adjustments without any follow up or tailoring adjustments). Some were good but very expensive, not very personable and also had no follow up. No one I've seen is like Dr. Chew. Dr. Chew is amazing. I'm a dentist and I came in barely able to move my shoulder. My pain was to the point that I couldn't sleep, couldn't open doors and I was in constant pain. Dr. Chew made every effort to see me, even scheduling me during off hours to get me out of pain. He listened to my symptoms, did a full assessment of my situation and tailored my adjustments expertly. I also work with a physical therapist and he altered my adjustments to conform with my physical therapist's advice. He's helped me learn and use stretches and other home care devices/techniques to help get me out of pain. When I came to Dr. Chew I was in 9/10 pain. Today after just a month and half (about 4 visits). I'm down to about 2/10 and every day I get better. It takes work and a lot of it relies on home care after adjustments but Dr. Chew will put you on the right track and help steer you in the right direction. I don't have insurance and his fees are VERY reasonable for private uninsured patients. Health is wealth and he is definitely worth the investment. Thank you Dr. Chew for your amazing care. I started running about a year ago (see Big Sur Half and Wharf to Wharf reviews) and have gradually started to increase the distance of my weekday runs. Along with the increases, have come some fun popping noises in my knee and a little bit of pain. After a couple visits to Dr. Chew, while the popping is still there from time to time, it's definitely not as bad. The biggest thing I've noticed is my recovery time has greatly decreased and I feel like it has a lot to do with having good alignment. After 2 weeks of therapy, I also feel significantly more flexible (Watch out yoga class! Here I come!). I wish I had taken Daphne's advice and started seeing Dr. Chew *before* I ran my first half! Dr. Chew is very well versed in sports medicine. I feel like I walk out of his office with new nuggets of information each time. Great doc! I have been seeing Dr. Chew of and on over the past 20 years. He is a very competent practitioner and a great person. I call when I have a problem and he always gets me in quickly, assesses my newest issue, initiates a treatment plan, and arms me with exercises that continue the healing process between visits. I have been seeing Dr. Chew for a couple of years now as needed for my aging neck and back. First, his personality is totally endearing and I felt relaxed right away. What I really like is the information he gives me about my body as to why it's not behaving the way it should. He has made several suggestions on how to deal with the kinks and knots I experience, suggesting that I use a lacrosse ball for instance in the neck area where I carry most of my stress, and it works! I am a fellow chiropractor from another neighborhood and see Dr. Tom Chew as my own chiropractor. Tom has been working on my frame since the 1980's. We trained for athletic events together before I ever even considered chiropractic as my career. First of all, I think it's important that you pick a chiropractor who is involved in his own conditioning and health outside of his office. Tom has always been a serious athlete and semi-professional coach...water polo, cycling, running. He knows his body and understands yours. Following that advice, I will add that his diagnostic skills and his adjusting technique are superlative. He understands how to rehabilitate an injury as well. Tom is a great chiropractor. Where to begin? Dr. Chew is amazing practitioner. He has a little something for everyone. His approach is conservative and he treats every visit almost as if it is your first and tries to assess how your back is doing each day you come in. He is very educational if you inquire about what he is doing, and provides stretches and massages you can do at home to help speed your recovery. His bed side manner is really where it is at. While he is doing adjustments, providing therapeutic massage or mobilizing your joints, he'll casually chat with you about whatever the subject of the day might be and before you know it, he has loosened you up and your treatments are over and it is time to get on with your day. To sum things up, Dr. Chew is a great Chiropractor with a comforting personality. I've been to quite a few chiropractors in my life and Thomas Chew is, in my opinion, the best of the best. Over the years he has helped my husband and me quite a few times. Right now he's working on my husband's frozen shoulder and my back injuries from a fall and we think our problems will be solved after a couple more visits.
