My first time to the University of California, Santa Barbara was for the 3rd Summit on Diversity in…read morethe Minerals, Metals, and Materials Professions in July 2018. I arrived the night before the start of the diversity summit. The campus was well marked on the streets, though I did get lost trying to find my lodging accommodations. Slowing down as I drove my car, I eventually spotted a building matching the description I had. The workers were friendly and clearly directed me to where parking was for those of us attending the summit. I had signed up for the conference of my own initiative following attending a conference for the corresponding professions in March 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. Finding parking that first night was my first sigh of relief I had made it. Then, walking my small suitcase towards the lodging building, I noticed a tunnel with lights running parallel to the tunnel entrances/exits up the sides and across the top of the tunnel. Pausing to take a look, someone on a bicycle rode through the tunnel and the lights blinked as they passed each strand. So cool. My lodging was comfortable, I was happy I had chosen to pay for everything myself in addition to choosing the summit myself. It helped build my confidence that I could call the shots in my own career. Summit sessions were held across the following two days in multiple on-campus buildings. Talent brought in spanned academia, national laboratory researchers, and people in industry. A few talk highlights included a presentation by a man from a company that had decided to pull his slides at the last minute for proprietary (intellectual property) reasons - he had to improv his entire talk. Another man, from my university (University of California, Berkeley) and a different department (Materials Science and Engineering) commented on how he hoped some day a Nobel Prize (corresponding disciplines: Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry) would be awarded to someone who cared enough about diversity to attend this diversity summit in advance of being awarded the prize. I enjoyed the on-campus meals (catered) we shared together as well. The weather was beautiful and we could watch an on-campus lagoon for wildlife. A birdwatching guide and binoculars had been provided in my room. All around, I had a lovely time.

This college campus has intrigued me for a while. I read an article in Forbes last year that had…read morethe 25 colleges with the most bang for your buck, and Cal State Channel Islands made that list. I think the average student debt upon graduation was a few thousand dollars? I have since been trying to convince my high school age daughter, subtly of course, that this is the college for her! I came here once to see a play that was in the black box theater. That was at night time so I didn't get to check out the campus very much. But it was really pretty at night- there are a lot of strung lights around the small streets. Makes it seem very intimate and inviting. Another time, I came during the day just to drive around and check out the various buildings/layout. I believe this site was an old state hospital? You can still see some of the old buildings versus the new ones. It all comes together really nicely I think. I came for another visit last weekend & walked around the campus with my daughter. It was a Sunday and we were looking for a non-crowded place to get outdoors, as we are trying to practice social distancing while getting some fresh air. I'm happy to say my daughter really enjoyed walking around this campus. It's really open and there's plenty of parking, plenty of visibility for sure. My review doesn't include anything about the academia of the school from personal experience, although I have read great things about it and know a few people that have gone here and enjoyed their experience (they were all gainfully employed, as well). I'm glad to have this lovely campus near us to visit and enjoy walking around. Oh, and my pup loved her walk here as well. Keeping fingered crossed that my daughter gives it a deeper look come college time!

The section of the school that we visited was a little outdated, but much has been done near the center of campus to welcome new and prospective students. Walk around sometime and you'll notice that you'll get a much larger percent that don't return even a smile. Most of these kids are only Christian by affiliation. I know not much can be done about the way the student body is so this is really just a warning for those who may struggle fitting in and want to make new friends. You will most likely feel like an outcast, if you insist on attending the school, there will be some good teaching and classes but there will be a tons of hypocrisy so you have to gird up and take it and constantly remind yourself why you are there and press on. There will be racism and holier-than-though peeps and you won't make the cut to join their groups, but hopefully you'll find a friend or two that are truly trying to walk in Him as you press on in your studies. For those that are naturally likable, you'll be just fine. There's some truth for you... You decide.

Some of the classrooms are in the same funky 1970s buildings, but the art/design classroom has updated computers and huge monitors. The library building has cool architecture and a vast seating area with computers. The online registration process is challenging (you need a Master's degree to figure it out), but after an hour and a call to the helpline which confirmed that the error glitch would require me to re-input all my data again, I was able to register. The open hours for the store and registration are tricky too, so check online before venturing over. The teachers are as cool as I remembered them, so it has been rather fun revisiting some of my college memories. I even find parking spots on Loma Vista like I used to, and they will still ticket you in the permit parking lots too.

While VC offers affordable and convenient classes, it falls short in every other department. In addition, the teachers are highly unmoving and do not even allow a late assignment when an immediate family member has been in the hospital or even passed away. Most recently, a teacher stated that it would not be equitable to treat students differently in such circumstances. Equality and equity are not the same thing; equity is giving people what they need, versus equality which is giving everyone the same thing. The fact that she did not understand that concept was especially frustrating and alarming considering it was a COMMUNICATIONS CLASS. I strongly urge any and all attendees to research the teacher's name and history on MULTIPLE sources, not just the college's. This institution depends on the ignorance of students in order to pass themselves off as "experts." I use the term "teacher" rather than "professor" since they are clearly not at that caliber. In this particular case, the teacher is Stacy Sloan Graham. We are required to take multiple courses in equity to obtain our degrees. However, this college does not seem to require their educators to practice it.

I personally know how stressful testing is, and this facility is the best place to take one. First off, it's not jam packed like most Pearson centers are and you may have only a handful or less people in the same room. Secondly, the climate is wonderfully controlled and they run it at a nice 69 or 70 degrees in there. Lastly, it is clean, easy to locate, and again, the staff is so wonderful, I would only recommend coming here for any professional testing.

Attended PGI 2006-2009 aiming for PhD in Depth Psychology. Wound up taking a medical leave final…read moreyear, having to make up a class in 2010; never got on track with Dissertation so settled for an MA. I'll be clear: I came to Pacifica for the experience more than the degree and was not disappointed. There was a range of scholarship within my cohort ranging from the very studious and conscientious to those who invested minimal effort. I was in the middle and struggled to meet the workload while fully employed at a demanding job. 12 years following matriculation, I believe 4 students in my cohort of 20 finished their dissertation. (That may be well under the rate of the other cohort running concurrently with ours that was rumored to be more studious.) 6 people dropped out of my cohort during or after year one, a few more at year two. 11 or 12 finished the three years of study prior to dissertation time. Pacifica is not for everyone and mistakenly is too inclusive. I believe that has fueled problems for the University and some of its students. But I like that there is a quality program that works hard to be accessible to people who would be marginalized in nearly any other academic setting. I have read some very inflammatory statements from unhappy people who attribute dishonesty to the administration and faculty. That was never my experience. I was asked directly by a faculty member about 2008 if I had ever been told program completion would lead equate to licensure and I could honestly say I was never led or misled to believe anything like that. I believe some people may have had their own ideas. My belief is that Pacifica - then and now - markets to and caters to mature adults who want the transformative experience of engagement with other mature adults answering the creative call of Depth Psychology pioneers like Jung and Joseph Campbell. During my time there I had hands on guidance from faculty I respected --with an exception or two--and additional lectures and personal engagement with thought leaders like James Hillman and Marion Woodman. In these exchanges, I felt as though I could go directly to the source of contemporary writers on subjects important to me. Also, during my time then and subsequently I have seen Pacifica faculty deal patiently and kindly with students who had meltdowns over perceived failure to meet narcissistic or childish demands, and students who would not have gained entry to many other universities. And there are students I have know who received scholarship assistance from the University. Money makes the wheels turn, yes, but it is not all about money, either. It is true that PGI is for-profit; mostly it is run, as I understand it, as an employee profit sharing plan so that PGI continues to invest in its people. I believe that is quantitatively different from publicly traded for-profit universities that have an eye on short term gains. Even though I did not complete the degree I sought, and even though I paid full price of about 70K tuition and an additional 25 K in travel, I believe I received a valuable experience. After a 3-year break, I have returned for public programs, certificate programs, and other gatherings over the past five years. I would not say that I "drank the kool-ade", as another reviewer suggested; I would assert I have a different and more confident view of the integrity of staff and administration of PGI.

I have found the professors, administration and staff to be exceptionally mature and patient. It is a place for serious scholarship in the Depth field- a field of study that can be very challenging. But for those who feel the call to this challenge, this institute can hold you.
