When I last dined here I had a lovely home made steak pie with chips and veg, the menu has all the usual pub favourites plus an interesting specials board adds variety. We were slightly annoyed on our last visit because the young waiter was very pushy with the check at the end of meal almost to the extent that we didn't feel like we were trusted. Hopefully that was just a one off experience though. There's a lot of competition on the pub front in Garstang, probably as a result of its long history as a thriving market town (it is also the world's first fairtrade town) but the Royal Oak certainly holds its own and is one of my favourites without a doubt. There are loads of posters behind the bar advertising cheap house doubles, bottles of cheap wine etc. etc. The staff were friendly enough and the karaoke was fun to watch but unfortunately my husband's Theakston's beer was virtually undrinkable, vinegary and decidedly 'off'. On this occasion I'd opted for a lager which you can't really go wrong with, my beer drinker's instinct had kicked in and told me that it probably wasn't the best pub for a beer :-) The lager was fine, but my husband left three quarters of his pint. I know he could have taken it back and they'd have replaced it and so on and so forth, but it just wasn't worth the effort really. All in all, to be honest, the pub is basically a bit rough and ready and is definitely my least favourite Garstang pub.

The bar billiards table has long since gone, replaced by a pool table, and the pub now serves food, but it still retains a quirky uniqueness as a result of being privately owned and run. There is a pile of board games in the corner of one room and newspapers and magazines are available to browse, novelty teapots adorn the walls and you can buy chocolate from behind the bar or jelly beans and sweets from a vending machine. There is a children's play area outside and it is also a hotel with a few rooms at reasonable rates. The food is inexpensive, we didn't dine but the menu included standard pub fare; steak pie, roast dinners, burgers, steak etc. A couple of cask beers were on including one from the local Bowland Brewery which was very pleasant. It is a big imposing building seemingly in the middle of nowhere, in fact it was kind of well known for being difficult to find in the days before satellite navigation :-) It is also close to the canal and there is a visitor mooring for a couple of boats by the bridge ( Bridge 54) or alternatively it is possible to moor on the towpath although it can be a little overgrown at times.

However, they do one thing that many pubs do which I don't like, they lay the tables out with cutlery and it's just left there all day. It's a personal thing but I just don't think it's very hygienic, why not just bring you your cutlery once you've ordered your meal? Still, that aside, it's basically a fairly typical pub, nothing special but pleasant enough if you're passing by.

There's a pool table, and football on the TV, and a board on the bar advertises Sandwiches £2, Hot Pies £1.50 :-) Garstang is a great little town for a pub crawl and the Crown is pretty typical of the pubs dotted along the High street really. Worth popping into for a pint of Wainwright's if you're in town :-)

It is a '2 for 1' style pub meaning that when two adults order a main course the cheaper of the two meals is free. The food does reflect this though, frozen chips and frozen onion rings accompanied my husband's steak and my beer battered cod was a disaster on the evening we dined, a small piece of fish surrounded by a mass of batter which had been fried to a crisp. The portions are small too. However they do have the service side of the business off to a tee. Attentive, friendly and cheerful staff take both food and drink orders at the table, unusual for a pub food venue. For beer lover's there is a selection of five or six cask beers including Jenning's, Pedigree, Cocker Hoop and Hobgoblin. On the Friday night that we visited they were doing a roaring trade with lots of family groups, in fact there were only a few free tables, and it is a very big pub so I may be in the minority in my opinion of the food :-) Basically I would describe it as a spacious, family friendly pub with cheap but unremarkable pub food. I'll certainly visit again for a beer but I probably wouldn't dine there again.

It's a bar you could quite happily go into for a drink without feeling self conscious that you were on your own. Always a buzz and friendly atmosphere with friends and families meeting up. Standard pub decoration and always clean. It has a large pub menu with good pub fayre. The homemade soup of any flavour is always special, tasty and worth ordering.
