In my short time there, I met some largely decent parents and enjoyed being able to serve. Principal Linda Kaye-Crowder, however, is a duplicitous bureaucrat. Don't take anything she says at face value because she has two of them. She presents herself as a compassionate individual, but she is working for the system, not for your kid. She mocked one child's gender expression when she thought no one was listening. (But I was.) She would gossip about parents behind their backs. Part of this is owing to her age, the other is that she has zero leadership ability whatsoever. It's a STEM school where the principal doesn't do email, apparently. She only sometimes wore her surgical mask in 2021, so she didn't even conform to the rules set forth by the county of Los Angeles or LAUSD. There is no school security (which is more of an LAUSD issue). A rear fence was only sometimes secured. There was also asbestos in the walls as late as 2022.

The combination of academic standards and sense of community is second to none. The emphasis on compassion and kindness is seen across all aspects of the school: administrators, teachers, students, and support staff. After taking a tour, I could tell that the campus and amenities were top notch but it wasn't until we got to hear 6th graders speak first-hand about their experience at Brawerman that we were convinced this is the best place for our children to attend school. These 6th graders spoke with confidence and shared their experiences at Brawerman. They have a buddy system were older students are buddies and mentors to younger students, giving them all an opportunity to be mentors and mentees. Finally, I would not overlook the school's diversity which may not be obvious at first sight. Our family is from El Salvador and we have formed friendships with other families from Mexico, Argentina, Israel and Europe that attend the school. We are blessed to be part of this community and encourage prospective parents to take a tour and see for yourself what Brawerman can offer.

There were a handful of great teachers who presented as what anyone would want in a teacher for their kid. The parent center is incredible and the woman who runs this program is awesome along with the families who are very relatable, kind and welcoming- made leaving this school mid year a devastating but necessary choice. We left because of my son's Kindergarten teacher, Ms. King. How this woman is a teacher is still a perplexing issue for me. Her tone with children is beyond intolerable. My kid was so happy to go to school, excited for learning, being dropped off by the Garden, his friends, then things started to change very quickly. There are several examples I can give that let us know he was not doing well. But this one sums it up pretty well, one day on our walk home from school he asked "Mom, do you think my teacher is mean to me because I'm not smart?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing, but also not surprised he picked that undertone up from her. After his pre-school years, going into her classroom was hugely difficult for our family. Witnessing her consistently rude, patronizing and sarcastic personality towards kids- I had no choice but to unenroll him from the school. It was barely 6 months into the school year. In addition, on the field trip, I sat behind her in the bus and heard her gossiping to a parent about another child's parent. The kid of the parent being gossiped about happened to be sitting right next to me and I wondered, did he know who she was talking about? Well, the kid said "you're talking about my Mom". He knew!! Ms. King then gaslights this 5 year old, telling him she wasn't, that he should "mind his own business". This is when I also figured out why my kid asked me that question about being smart. Her tone with certain children, who happened to know how to read, was clearly much kinder and softer, in her way of being those things. Children can read a room pretty well, they in fact are incredibly perceptive which I suppose could be called "smart". I literally walked to the office and un-enrolled him from this absolutely toxic learning environment after that field trip. My issue with the school is I know everyone knew what was going on with her. You'd have to be completely checked out not to notice. Everyone can hear Ms. King's voice, her tone and rudeness throughout the hall with her door shut, at the fence during drop off... and for this, I felt there was no need to discuss her behavior, which is obviously negligent and inappropriate for a classroom of ANY grade. In addition to this, she never took the kids to the Garden (at least during our 6 months there) for learning. Which I was told would be an extensive part of their sciences and environmental learning. After unenrolling my kid, I saw a parent, who was not from the same classroom but saw every morning at drop off- I was visibly sad. I let her know we were leaving. I said "it's just not the right fit" and she said "does not the right fit really mean Ms. King is unhinged?" So. Yeah, people know... My kid is finishing 1st grade now at another school. We are on still recovering from those 6 months.

Also, I'm not a typical parent,really not. I happen to have a child. There are mom's, and people who have had a child; sorry I'm the latter. So what makes this place so special? They completely make up for my short comings. Manners, order, education, art, conscientiousness, naps, you get it. Taylor Tots is the mom. oh my god, I don't know if I want my child goes somewhere where a mom is so strange and uncaring.. good, because the rest of them aren't like that at all. The other parents are hands on, lovely, caring hard working people who demonstrate their love of their children, of parenthood, and the community that is Taylor Tots, fantastic parents. The teachers, wow. I love them, all grandmas, all kind, but you really don't want to cross them. You will end up on the bench for talking in class, thinking about talking in class, not asking for permission. Obedience is simple, consistent and required. You might think this is horrible, but I say better now then 1st grade. It helps then learn, and they really learn. The kinder-gardeners pass into 2nd grade. Not my thing, but that right you kid can skip a grade here. They get art, STEM programs, and summer school. Don't get the wrong idea, these women love, hug and listen to children (they are after all grandmothers who have taught children for 30+ years). They are sweet intelligent, wise and really, don't cross them. So what's the feel? Taylor Tots was started in the 50's not much has changed, small furniture, little water fountains, giant tree, merry go round, slides clean and orderly. Snacks, naps, finger paint, thick blue pencils and brown lined paper. Traditional reading-writing-'rithmatic studies, with a little prayer thrown in. wha..what? ya I said it, they say grace before lunch and recite the pledge of allegiance, grandma's remember? So all this can be yours for the price of $110 a week, but wait there's more, that includes lunch and snacks. Not enough? They are open from 7:30 - 6pm, and if you are late (please, don't be late, Mrs. Joyce is tired and wants to go upstairs, yes the caretakers live there), anyways it's a nominal fee, and a sigh from Mrs. Joyce, I always feel a little bad, and try not to do it again. We all learn something at Taylor Tots, and if you are lucky, like I am.. you will learn a lot, and so will your kid.

It had a 8/9 GreatSchools rating at the time. Pros: The families are diverse, welcoming and open-minded. As a person of color and an immigrant, I appreciate that the families at this school represent the diversity of Los Angeles. There is also a lot of socio-economic diversity. 2) Another great aspect is the community events that the kids love, like Halloween Carnival, Glow Dance, MonsterWalk, etc. The kids look forward to these school events every year and creates fun opportunities for families to get together outside of school. 3) The Friends of Gardner parent organization is a small but mighty group that does all of the fundraising for the arts/music/gardening program and runs a lot of the school events. They truly "fill in the gaps" when it comes to the quality of educational experience our kids get at Gardner. Here are some NEUTRALS: Gardner is a No Homework policy which means that all the way up until 5th grade, your kid will get no homework. If they do, it's completely optional. Some families appreciate the freedom and philosophy. Other families have noted a very hard transition when their child goes into middle school and they now have 1-2 hours of homework every night. Cons: Every year, we have a handful of students in the class who need more support, whether that is just behavioral issues or a learning disability that requires IEP, and the teachers, school, administration, has little to no resources to adequately meet these needs. This means major disruptions during classroom learning time and students falling behind grade level. (This is not particular to Gardner, but likely district-wide for LAUSD schools). 2) Most of our classes were 30+ kids in each grade, which is also not specific to Gardner. Final thoughts: We've been at Gardner for 4 years, and every year, many families leave for neighboring schools. I think Gardner, 10 years ago, was an amazing school, but now I would say it is average/above average. And if you're curious, their GreatSchools rating is now a 4/5.

That was only One of the red flags from this school but unfortunately I went ahead and enrolled my 4yr because of the convenient location. I wouldn't recommend this school to anyone! The office manager acts like she runs a military school. There is zero communication among the staff and they have TOO many kids enrolled. My kid went here for two weeks and we could not do it any longer. The drop off at 8am is insane with cars piled up next to each other and you still have to wait in line to sign your child in and leave them at the door. The principal of Wilton EEC talks down to parents and lacks communication. I luckily found a better school where they are welcoming, care about students and parents and have fun performances and spirit weeks. The principal at my son's new school commutators either parents daily via an app. I don't have much feedback on the teachers at Wilton as I met them once and my kid never mentioned anything negative of them. Boys and girls share a bathroom - which is odd. There should be boy girl bathrooms for kids their age. This school also feeds the kids sugary snacks and drinks from what my son told me. Cookies and milk everyday is not OK. I now drive 20 min to and from a new school vs the 2 min it took to Wilton. I'll take a better education over a convenient location any day.
