Worth a read before choosing AKUA…read more I left AKUA because the living situation became completely unmanageable, and I felt that my concerns were not adequately addressed until I had already decided to leave. I was placed in a shared room and, because of a seizure I had in 2022, was required to sleep with my mattress and box spring on the floor. This created an awkward sleeping setup with no convenient outlet nearby. I had to move my bed and put my white-noise machine on my luggage just so I could hear it without disturbing my roommate. My roommate did not want the fan running, did not want the white-noise machine running, and did not want the window open. At the same time, there was repeated nighttime activity in the room, including her getting up to eat snacks in her bed. My understanding was that the snacks were considered contraband under AKUA's own rules. I went several nights without getting adequate sleep. By the fifth night, I was so exhausted that I could barely keep my eyes open. I eventually went into the room, and the situation turned into an argument. Staff intervened, but from my perspective, they were responding to the argument they happened to witness rather than the several nights of sleep deprivation and the problems that led up to it. I will also be honest that I became extremely angry and made an inappropriate verbal comment to my roommate afterward. I am not going to pretend I handled every part of the situation perfectly. But I also don't believe it is fair to judge the entire situation based on one confrontation without considering what happened beforehand. While waiting for discharge, I had a panic attack and one staff member was kind enough to take me for a walk and help me calm down. I appreciated that individual staff member's kindness. What really frustrated me was that on the day I had already decided to leave, I was told my roommate would be moved upstairs and that we would no longer have to share a room. Apparently, a better solution was available after all, just not until I had reached my breaking point. I left AKUA and returned home. I am continuing my recovery through outpatient treatment. Leaving this facility was not me deciding to give up on recovery. It was me deciding that I could not continue in an environment where I was not getting adequate sleep and did not feel my concerns were being effectively resolved. If you are considering AKUA, I strongly recommend asking very specific questions beforehand about room assignments, sleeping arrangements, how roommate conflicts are handled, and what happens when a resident is unable to sleep because of a shared-room situation. My experience was extremely disappointing, and I would not return.

At a time of insecurity and frustration, it would.really help if the staff at this place had better…read morecommunication skills and we're more supportive to Jamie's trying to navigate something, like I , never had to deal with before.

Everyone is simply so caring and thoughtful during the rehabilitation process. I can't say enough positive things. If these services are ever need I would not look any further. Facilities are clean, friendly, and the food is outstanding. Every section of this facility is covered by people who truly care for the patients needs and recovery success. From the moment he arrived, I could tell this wasn't your typical treatment program, it was more like a healing retreat. He'd tell me about the amazing fresh, healthy meals, the weekly massages as well as trauma yoga, acupuncture, and even the equine therapy that really opened his eyes to new ways of connecting and growing. The gym membership with a personal trainer made a huge difference too, he's stronger and healthier than I've seen him in years. I'll be forever grateful to New Dawn for giving him the tools and support to rebuild his life.

I don't usually write reviews, but I feel compelled to write this one because Teresa has truly…read morechanged my life. When I first started working with her, I was in the middle of the hardest, darkest decision I've ever faced: leaving my narcissistic ex and all the fear of what would follow. I honestly didn't know how I was going to make it through. Teresa was the one who helped me find the strength, my voice, and my worth when I didn't believe I had any left. She is not the type of therapist who just sits there and repeats back what you've said in clinical jargon. She listens--really listens--connects the dots, identifies the patterns you're repeating, and then gives you actual tools to work with. She has this massive binder, filled with handouts and worksheets on everything you can imagine--organized by behavior, diagnosis, and pattern--and she pulls from it when something fits. She gives book recommendations, resources, and real-world strategies that I could take home and apply. Every session felt like progress, not just venting. What sets Teresa apart is her dedication. She's not lazy--she genuinely loves what she does, and it shows. She's constantly reading, learning, and keeping up with the latest research so she can bring fresh, informed perspectives to her clients. I always felt like she was giving me her best, not just "checking the box." She is warm and kind, and she remembers the smallest details--things I said months back that I had forgotten myself. But don't mistake her kindness for passivity. She isn't trying to be your "friend." She will challenge you when you're falling back into unhealthy habits or patterns, and she does it with honesty and compassion. It's never about shaming--it's about holding up a mirror so you can really see yourself, and then showing you how to change. In the past two years, I've changed more than I did in the previous four decades. Teresa has helped me understand the true meaning of co-dependency--beyond the oversimplified definition we all think we know. She helped me see that my 14-year relationship was toxic and abusive in ways I hadn't been able to name. She helped me recognize that my ex has a personality disorder, which explained so much of the distorted reality and self-blame I had been living with. She also taught me that I could rewire my own brain to undo the unhealthy patterns I thought were "just who I was." I used to label myself a people pleaser, someone who couldn't say no. Teresa helped me see the deeper issues at play and gave me the tools to start putting myself first. She's helped me quiet the inner critic that once ruled my life, and, maybe most importantly, she's taught me that I don't need to be perfect. Mistakes don't mean I'm broken--they mean I'm human. I can honestly say I would not be the person I am today without her guidance. If you're looking for a therapist who will show up, who will care, who will challenge you, and who will give you the tools to actually change your life--Teresa is that person.
