I finally decided I needed help to understand my feelings and to see if there were a way to pull myself out of the deep grinding morass in which I found myself. I wasn't sure there was. Dr. Pedersen showed me otherwise. I started seeing him at Kaiser where he was the head of his area and followed him into his private practice. I am so glad I did. Dr. Pedersen has an ability to understand one's suffering and to link it to a way out. He can allow one to understand the impact of the emotional shells exploding around one's head; how to protect from further issues, to the extent possible; and how to begin the process of repairing the damage. His extensive knowledge of therapy, as well as his knowledge of other avenues of treatment, permitted me to understand myself much better. I could see the destructive nature of certain actions I was allowing to be inflicted upon me, and I was armed with a defense mechanism. I've never taken so many notes since I was in school. And, he has the ability to convey his knowledge in a way that is understandable and can be applied in one's daily life. He gave me guidance that I applied regularly; things I never would have thought of. His therapy just works, at least it did for me. I am a much changed person. I am happy and joyful most of the time now. He got me out of some dark places. Was it easy? No. Was it worth it? Definitely. If you have issues, you need a therapist who can take you through them and show you the way out. Dr. Pedersen did it for me. From a personality side, he has a great sense of humor, he is never mean or derogatory, and he truly has a desire to help his patients. He is bright, funny, and caring. I only have the highest of respect and gratefulness for Dr. Pedersen. I don't even want to think where I might be without him. I highly recommend him.

Like the others, I wish I could give this place a zero star. I live next door to one of their…read morefacilities in San Martin. Last night, a young child ran over to our house from the street barefoot, (we have a 5 acre lot, mind you), balling their eyes out, shaking, and desperate for help. The child expressed that they ran away because they were SA'd. The child had not showered or eaten in days. The child shared more horrific details about their treatment at the facility, but I don't think it's necessary to disclose more. We took the child inside and took care of them. The sheriffs office came over to our house, but the organization did not report the child missing until 2 hours after we had called the sheriff!! There are ONLY 6 KIDS there at a time!! IT SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN 2 HOURS TO REALIZE SOMEONE IS MISSING. Unfortunately, about 5 hour after she had been at our home, it was decided that they had to send the child back, despite the fact that the child didn't feel safe and had been SA'd. (Please note, we strongly question whether the sheriffs enacted the correct protocol regarding the SA.) We were resistant to send the child back after hearing how they were treated but there was nothing we could do because of the legal restrictions. When we walked the child back, the staff treated the child, us, and EVEN THE SHERIFF with a cold, unwelcoming, and annoyed attitude. BOTTOM LINE: DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE. This is not the first time incidents like this have happened and we fully intend to report this to CPS to investigate the facility.

We live out of state and embark kept giving us different dates for discharge and could not communicate to each other about getting us a correct date. I got a flight the day of her discharge because, again, they wouldn't give us a consistent date. I got there the next day and had to pay for a hotel. - they were supposed to send referrals to several day treatments in our network the day we left. Which in itself is ridiculous to wait until a kid is discharged to send a referral that usually has several weeks of a wait list. turns out, they never sent the referrals, and the ones that they were supposed to send to weren't even in our network. - I emailed several times after she was discharged to ask about the referral and never got a response other that an initial response saying they were cc'ing the therapist. With me trying to follow up on this, still no response. - there was a staff member that told my daughter that her life goes against his (the staff member) beliefs. This was not relayed to me until after her discharge. My daughter was told that the staff member was fired, which I don't believe. I am sure he was just moved to another location to continue the trauma he causes to at-risk youth.

*READ THIS BEFORE YOU DECIDE WHETHER THIS PLACE IS FOR YOU*…read more I'm a recent client. I stayed at California Mental Health for 5 weeks. This was my experience. There was multiple instances in which HIPAA guidelines have been violated by Jeannie, the executive director. It's concerning to know that someone who has the authority to hold someone accountable for violating HIPAA guidelines is setting the example that it's something that is acceptable. I was in the kitchen cooking along with the chef, and clients/staff walking in and out. She admitted that she was at fault for taking a personal call at the dining room table and confirmed that she did in fact see that there were other people in the room while she disclosed a patient's medical history, including their full name. The HIPAA guidelines have continued to be violated even after I expressed their concern. There have also been microaggressions stated by this individual like assuming a client doesn't speak English because they speak multiple languages and stating they dont look like their ethnicity and specifying what ethnicity they "look like". More than often she is not updated on the patient's progress. There's a level of professionalism that is not being met. I don't believe it's appropriate to comment on one's progress without doing their due diligence to have the most updated information before inserting her opinion/suggestions. There is also a lack of communication when changes are happening. For example, when Norma, the in person therapist was no longer with California Mental Health it was never something clients were made aware of. All the clients were in the dark waiting for her return. Clients were told by the director that there was additional support coming in so that we would have more support. It was worded as if Norma would be coming back. The fact that she was gone was not acknowledged. There hasn't been a therapist in California Mental Health for six weeks. The accommodations and support on the website do not provide a realistic expectation of what it's like to stay here. Unfortunately, not every insurance covers clients to stay here so potential clients should make an informed decision before paying an insane amount to basically live in what felt like an Airbnb with roommates. Most of my stay consisted of no groups and down time. With that being said, the website should describe a more realistic expectation. Groups don't happen most of the time. There is a lot of down time to the point where you are better off renting out an airbnb at a more affordable cost. There is a lack of communication by both Jeanne and the program director, Josh. The staff is often unaware of changes and left in the dark about daily client activities. Josh is not reliable with client requests. It typically takes about a week of constantly asking before there are any art supplies approved/delivered. Example #2 Instead of fixing the master bathroom California Mental Health thought it would be appropriate to provide pliers to turn on/off the bathtub. Its interesting that they will confiscate any "sharp" objects including tweezers, but find giving clients pliers acceptable. This ended up causing a massive water spill which a client ended up fixing temporarily while the plumber came to the house. Example #3 Clients were also put in an uncomfortable living situation due to a new client consistently banging their head on the walls. Both the staff and clients expressed their concerns which were completely brushed off. We were all forced to deal with outbursts. It did not feel like a safe environment. Example #4 I was uncomfortable sharing a room with my roommate due to very intense outbursts and was put in a position to address the room change directly with the roommate even after expressed my concern. This led to a lot of tension in the house. The other client turned very passive aggressive towards me even after moving rooms. It is unfortunate that a place one goes to find peace there is an overwhelming amount of added stress. This is not a residential home I would recommend to anyone. I would like to take a moment to express my deepest appreciation to the A.M/P .M/NOC staff. They were all angels! If it wasn't for their kindness and genuine personalities I would have left. They went above beyond in all aspects.

I worked with the counselor for a while and it was ok but I feel like it was a waste of time. She would constantly tell me next week we'll do an exercise but we would never do an exercise. She would email me worksheets and we'd never go over them so I just stopped reading those emails. Eventually she was leaving community solutions and I was told I would get a new counselor. My case manager kept reaching out saying we will meet during this time before the new therapist starts but then she kept canceling on me each week or she wouldn't show up. I ended up not responding to her text messages anymore because I was annoyed and it was pointless. I never did get a new counselor either even though I was told one was already scheduled for me. Services just ended on their own, I didn't feel like the quality of care was there for me to try reaching out again.
