I really wanted something sweet but it had to be vegan so went to this spot. I have been to the restaurant next door several times but never came here. I walked in and was served right after the person in front was done. The server explained each dessert and I was going to go with the brownie and blueberry donut. Then when I got to the counter I seen this beautifully made chocolate cake and I was sold. He told me it was a peanut butter chocolate cake and it cost $12 plus tax. Vegan food especially in this and the restaurant next door is expensive. I never paid $12 for dessert but really wanted it. The server cut a big slice so I was happy with that. He was really nice about putting the other desserts that I was going to get back. I paid with credit card and left. When I got home I waited a bit to try it because it was cold and I prefered to have it room temperature. When I finally dug in, I was pleased. It was very good. Such a cute place on central ave in Newark. Very unexpected but I'm glad I stopped in. Browsed in here with a friend to see what they had and needed up trying the fennel bean tacos. When I tell you I've been thinking of these tacos ever since!! Soooo good. My friend was looking for a substitute taco to make for her kids that was healthy and I think this will be it. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I did not checks out the upstairs but from what I saw there is seating there. There is also some tables set up outside to sit and have your food. Last Friday I went to the Zucchini Bar/ Blueberry Cafe for a good friend's birthday. I called the day before to let them know about my friend's birthday and if they could incorporate something special for the day. I spoke to Jessica over the phone who was more then accommodating. She told me about their special Friday night activities which included "Open Mic Night" and "Jazz Night" every Friday....alternating Fridays for each activity. Last Friday was "open mic night" in which they had a wonderful host who told some jokes, sang a little and even did some other entertainment. It was a nice crowd of about 12 people which was perfect for me. We sat outside on this somewhat humid but...slightly cool Friday and ordered a bunch of vegan *electric* food. The host invited audience members to come out of their seats and participate on the microphone. He even took song requests to play. I'm old school so I chose Diana Ross' song "The Boss". The host was awesome! Jessica arranged a very special night for my friend. She brought out a slice of strawberry shortcake with a lighted candle on it and the staff came out singing "happy birthday" while beating on bongo drums. We ate so much food. Everything we ordered from the mushroom burger to the zucchini fries to the tacos and kale salad was amazing! We had an awesome time at The Zucchini Bar enjoying wonderful food, dancing to good music and hanging out with some pretty cool people. The night was magical!! This review is made genuinely and constructively. The food here is great. The consistency in the availability of said food is non existent. I placed 2 orders through Door Dash/ Uber Eats and both were canceled on two separate days. Two days later "third time's the charm" I think, when calling ahead to place the order. Person who answers the phone says, that that particular menu item (Buffalo Gyro) will be available after 1pm. I ask for clarity if I should place the order after 1pm and it won't be canceled. He says yes. I place the order at 2:45 and nope... the order wasn't canceled. After placing it in my cart, I received a message that the restaurant was closed. I can't make this up. So, I decide to call (days later) and place an order for pick up. I was REALLY in the mood for this gyro. It's good yall. The person who answered didn't take my name or anything, just hung up after I said what I wanted. I called back just to make sure my order would be ready and was assured that it would be. Because I am becoming keen to this place and the wait time (as the first time I had thos Gyro was in person and it took 40 minutes before we ate), I waited 1 hour before leaving my house to get my order... and guess what? It wasn't even made. The girl who answered the phone and the food preparer were playfully discussing WHY it was not made. There was clearly some miscommunication. My order was hurriedly made and provided to me. No compensation or free dessert for my troubles... just my food I guess. It was still delicious but it will be some time until I return. I have to restore my patience. The food is expensive (over $18 for the gyro alone, no sides, no chips) but what food isn't nowadays? 3 stars is for the 5 star food and the -2 service. read more

I went to the Zucchini Bar for the first time yesterday while waiting for my smoothie to be made at their sister store, Blueberry Cafe. At the Zucchini Bar there was a young lady taking her time to assist an elder customer. She did not bother to greet me when I entered which was not a huge deal since that gave me a little time to review the chalk board menu by the door. I was standing 6 feet behind the older woman placing her order when another woman came in with a stack of papers covering her mouth and nose. I was uncomfortable by her inefficient face covering so I moved further into the store. The young lady's coworker stepped into the corner by the menu to take a personal call with his mask pulled down below his chin. The young employee eventually addressed me and asked what I would like to order I asked if she still had donuts she said no they are sold out so I told her I would like a slice of blueberry cheese cake and mango cheese cake. I waited about 10 minutes for her to finish helping the older lady. While I waited the woman with the paper cover her mouth opened the door to cough outside. I should have left then but I stayed. When I got to the counter I added a Kale salad to my order and the young lady told me just so you know we stop serving food at 4pm. I told her it would've been nice had she mentioned that when I came in the door and was studying the menu. She proceeded to go back and forth with me and say well since I initially asked about pastries she didnt think it was necessary to mention any other food items. CUSTOMER SERVICE NOTE: If you greet your customers as soon as the enter your establishment and ask is this your first time here? You open an opportunity to engage and educate your customers on your menu and policies. Back to the review...I also asked the young lady was her coworker suppose to be working while he was taking a personal call in the corner with his mask down? She said yea but it's okay. I said no it's not okay because he could've been helping me while I was waiting for you help the older lady. I also mentioned the woman with the paper over her face and the young lady said that was the owner. Which then totally made sense as to why the customer service was so poor. The owner did not present as an owner and was not even following state law to protect herself, her employees and customers by wearing proper face coverings. She was in the store trying to order food for herself and acting confused that so many items she wanted were sold out. I paid $33.13 for 2 slices of cheese cake and a Kale salad. The blueberry cheese cake was the last and I should have left it there. There was no graham cracker crust, the blueberry gel was nasty and the cake was dry. The kale salad was basic. The mango cheese cake was the best - fresh, moist, perfectly sweet graham cracker crust. Overall Im very disappointed that I spent $60 between these two establishments. The Zucchini Bar has an even larger selection of fresh herbs so I will likely go back to continue to support black owned business and have a source for the herbs that I use, however it's not likely that I'll ever buy food from Zucchini Bar again. read more

Where to begin? I love everything about this place. It feels like Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, Bob Marley, and Charlie Wilson opened a cafe. It's a balm for the soul as well as the spirit. I'm not vegan but have been dying to try this place. I came in just for a tea, and not only did they have the perfect wellness tea for me, I ended having a delicious lunch (quinoa bowl with buffalo mushrooms ) and then dessert and mushroom coffee. They all blew my mind!!!! How is mushroom coffee even possible? And how can it taste so good? Run don't walk to support this fabulous business. I came home for the weekend to check on my Mother. I heard about this place and the restaurant next door through someone I follow on Instagram. I was really happy to hear that such healthy options were now located in Newark, and not too far from where my Mother lives. I vowed to stop in while home and they were my first stop. I ordered the zucchini pancakes and hash. I then went next door for a smoothie. The guys here are very nice and have a great energy about them. But watch out for the sweet case right there at the register. If your flesh is weak, you will likely walk out of there with one of their vegan treats. They look so good! I have to tell you that I ate off those pancakes and hash the ENTIRE DAY! Breakfast, lunch and dinner! I reheated them at one point and at another, I ate it cold. WHATEVER! The pancakes were so moist and although the fat girl in me wanted to pour more syrup on them, the healthy sista told her HELLZ NO! Seriously, no extra syrup was needed, they really are that moist and flavorful. The hash was equally as great. If no one told me, I would've thought I was eating meat. I love this place!! Was craving something sweet and decided to see what treats they had today! I'm vegan, so it's not always easy to find things around me, so my gratitude for this place & their sister store Blueberry Cafe is immense! Anyway, today they had Mango cheesecake, & Walnut vanilla cake! I got the Walnut vanilla cake & its sooo good! The pictures do do it justice! It's soft, moist, sweet but not overly sweet. So I have been visiting Blueberry Cafe on and off for about 2 years. I remember when Zucchini Bar first opened because I was extremely excited to see a vegan bakery/cafe open up around my school/home. I abruptly stopped coming to the place for reasons that I will elude to. As time went on, I slowly started to realize that I was giving this place too much slack. I love supporting vegan business and especially black owned ones, in Newark. Although the food is SLAMMING, I can't keep supporting a business that is so poorly managed. Today I came back to Zucchini Bar for the first time and I see nothing has changed. I walk in and there is TWO slices of cake available. TWO. I asked the girl at the counter where everything was and she said, "we were full before but we aren't getting another shipment till Tuesday." TUESDAY and it was Saturday. Imagine walking into a bakery and seeing two slices of cake available. Not only that, they were both priced at around $8-10/slice. This is straight disrespectful to the community. You're in one of the lowest socioeconomic cities in the state and you're charging people that kind of money for a healthier alternative. You wonder why our own people call veganism a "white people thing". I decided to get the cake because I really just wanted to satisfy my sweet tooth. After I told someone at the counter what I wanted it, it took them like 10 minutes for them to cut it and give it to me. I see the menu and the prices haven't changed. $16 for a sausage sandwich? You have people in your community pinching pennies ordering off the Dollar Menu, but you can't supply them with an inexpensive healthy route? I have been to many vegan places and nobody has every asked me to pay $16 for a sandwich. Even in Blueberry I've spent upwards to $20 for a good meal. This is why I stopped visiting Blueberry and Zucchini as a whole. The prices, ridiculous. The service, unresponsive. Inventory, irresponsible. The potential, untapped. I am a proud vegan that loves seeing our restaurants flourish. But this place doesn't make any sense to me. Whoever is the owner, please step it up. Lower prices, train your employees, and keep up with your inventory. I wouldn't be writing this review if at least one of those three things are satisfied. It's a good cafe. Seemed newly opened and they were trying to get their act together. Their empanadas were not that great. But truly kudos for trying. And because it is close to brook branch park, I recommend it for vegans who need takeaways for a picnic at the park. Also, their sister establishment is right next door selling soups and salads. So I will just have to give this place another shot again to update my review. For now, it was a very underwhelming and chaotic experience, as they took forever to get to us and even if there were only 3 of us in the queue, it really took like 20 minutes to get to us! The Zucchini Bar is a deep, cleansing breath of EPA certified air! This dessert bar is the perfect compliment to its vegan neighbor, the Blueberry Café. There's no limit to the vegan desserts which are offered here. The cakes, cookies, puddings, pies, ice creams, & sorbets are DELICIOUS AND 100% vegan. My personal favorites are the cookies and cream "cheese"cake and the coconut sorbet. My son's favorite is the vanilla nice cream in a chocolate cone (he had 2) and the strawberry shortcake. This place makes me sad. I want to love it. I want it to be my go to vegan spot but it just keeps failing at that. I'm not sure about these other reviews, apparently I'm missing the rave. Just ordered a vegan fish sandwich with chips. The best part was the chips, which seemed store bought with a little nooch sprinkled on them. The sandwich was cold and salty. I supppose it was salty from the so called tartar sauce. The oyster mushrooms were like re-cooked pieces of some sort of mushrooms. They were pretty damn woody actually. I hate to write a negative review because I do like the idea of a vegan restaurant in the neighborhood but this place is OVERPRICED!!!!! I think it's quite sad and unfair, don't get me wrong I get it, some of the ingredients they claim they use are a bit more expensive, but even with that put into consideration, the prices are unreasonable. I'm not saying sell $5 plates but this is ridiculous. Overall the food is tasty, the bake goods are a gamble, why are you selling dry, old stale cakes and for what you charge you should be embarrassed. Don't be fooled by the area of town! Walk in to this place and you are in a different world. The service was remarkable from everyone. Music was bumpin. Food was stellar! As a LONG TIME supporter/customer of this establishment I will no longer be referring anyone here or purchasing anything from this restaurant. I received one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had in life. I've spent a lot of money between here & Blueberry Café (sister restaurant next door). I arrived at the establishment about 12'ish with my girlfriend to have lunch one day and I decided to make sure she tasted the Buffalo Oyster Mushroom Gyro since I had it the day before and it was really good. We placed the order for 2 Buffalo Oyster Mushroom gyros and One Nacho Bowl w| Fennell Sausage. At that moment they also received a big phone order so I asked how long did she think it will take to prepare (because on a regular day with no other customers it takes a while). I insinuated if it would take about an hour to be done and she calmly replied "No, it should be way less than that". I decided not to wait inside for the food because being a regular customer here I know the food takes a while to be prepared as most things are made to order. The cashier/server and I came to an agreement that I would write my order and phone number down on their note pad and she would call me when it was ready to be picked up, because they were short staffed (per usual). This is where things went left... I went home and received a call back from them about an hour later asking me to re-iterate my order for assurance and how she was going to start working on it immediately. Mind you this was an hour after I had already left the store. 2 hours in now, I called back to find out what exactly was going on. I was then told the Buffalo Oyster Mushroom Gyro's were almost done but she forgot that I had a Nacho Bowl with Fennell Sausage and she was going to start working on that right away. 3 HOURS had now passed and I called back the establishment before driving there to assure that my food would be ready because realistically I've NEVER EVER in my life had to wait 3 hours for food and that alone is ridiculous to begin with. She answers the phone and states that the sandwiches were ready but the nachos need another 10 minutes. Her response to me asking if it was ready was very shady; so I decided to go up there and see what was really going on with my order. I get to the restaurant and now the Owner is behind the counter preparing orders. I told her about the situation and how long we been waiting for the food after being lied to over the phone for 3 HOURS. The response given was 1,000% unprofessional. She blamed us for not coming back earlier to check on the order (but yet, we were in contact with her employee the whole time after it was suggested for me to write it down in the first place). Not only that, there was no more of the specific bread needed for the Gyro's and there was no more Sausage for the Nacho Bowl and none of the items were even ready after 3 hours+ of waiting. I never expected this establishment to move that way with a long time customer. Lastly; stop advertising the Lakewood brand fresh pressed juice from the grocery store as Cold Pressed juices on your menu. It's false advertisement at its finest. I say all of this to say; Treat your customers as you would like to be treated. Customer's keep the doors open! read more

I've been looking for my new vegan spot ince I moved and I think I found it. I am spoiled. The food is whole foods.i had the loaded nachos. Those nachos is nothing like a diner type nachos. Oh no. These were gourmet sautéd onions and peppers and nutritional yeast/cashew cheese sprinkled on top. It was filling and fulfilling and everything in between. There are very few vegan-friendly restaurants in regards to deserts in Newark; needless to say, my girlfriend and I were excited when we heard about Zucchini Bar had opened a month ago. We went today: the staff were really nice and the owner Rashena was really knowledgeable. I had vegan butter pecan ice cream (tasted like Klein's, which is awesome) with a birthday cake cone in a bowl. It was perfect! My girlfriend had the chocolate strawberry cheesecake. Hello :) We went here a few weeks ago for a special occasion when we happened to be in the area, and searched for a vegan restaurant. We happened to mention our special occasion to the owner, who remembered around dessert time and happened to bring us a dessert that is very special to us, on the house. I went to school for nutrition, and the owner's passion and knowledge is incredible. They have such a variety of herbs for teas, which I have never heard of and she does not use any processed forms of protein. They answered SO many questions and were incredible helpful. I got the kale salad which was amazing!! The dressing for the complementary chips which she made in house, I could have drank it. It was so good! My husband's zucchini pizza was literally amazing. It was a cute quaint atmosphere, the staff was beyond helpful, to answer questions, they were really kind, and accommodating. The dessert they brought with a candle which was for our special occasion, was absolutely delicious. The tiramisu was a little strong (just how I like it) creamy, and it had a hint of coconut which was beyond delicious. Just like my dad made it!
