An absolute gem of a "dive" bar…read more I dropped by The Vat yesterday after being away from the city for 5 years - it hasn't changed a lick, and that's a good thing. One of the funkiest live music venues/dive bars I've ever been to, The Vat is funky, eclectic and altogether charming and welcoming. No wonder it's a hit with diverse people ranging from college students to old regulars. I wish I could pick it up and take it with me, up north to Edmonton. The server was friendly, the beer (house draught) was ultra-cheap and cold, and even though there were only a couple of rub-a-dubs around on a Sunday afternoon at 2, it was a blast. Definitely drop by if you've never been. A great way to break up the long drive from Edmonton to Calgary, or vice versa.

I rarely have a problem finding a preferred table- I like booths over chairs and low tables over taller ones. Plus, they won Red Deer Wing Fest people's choice award this past summer. The rest of their menu is pretty good too- I'd recommend the Murph's chips both loaded and not loaded. Only real downside is sometimes the karaoke music gets a little loud to have conversations and service is intermittent sometimes, depending on who is your server. All in all, Murph's a great place to go for wings or a drink with friends!

There are 4 inhabitants of the little town but every last Saturday of the month, the place comes alive. And I mean it really comes alive. Every last Saturday a team of local volunteers put on a pizza night at the saloon. Starts at 5 pm and runs till late. The saloon is a licensed establishment but children are welcome. Creeky uneven floors in a building well past the "condemned" status (but way fun!) Take a group or go by yourself. Remember, only open once a month

We had been here once before years ago and I remember liking the wings so I thought I would give my mission one last kick at the can. So glad I did! I spoke to a very nice lady (Hailey) during the day and she told me she would call me back after speaking to her Management Team. Sure enough, she called me 5 minutes later with an affirmative. When we arrived I noticed the pub had been totally renovated from the last time we were there. It still looks like a dive from outside (in a strip mall), but it is totally refurbished inside and looks great. The wings? Every order came out correctly, hot and with enough seasoning and sauce. They have an extensive list of flavours and the wings are huge! The service? Poor gal was on her own serving the entire pub on wing night. She was super friendly and kept everything coming, but she ran her butt off doing it. Better yet, no screaming children in the bar! And indeed. Delicious, unique beautiful creations in every glass. I also left having enhanced my liquor IQ despite killing a few brain cells :-). What took me pleasantly by surprise was the food. Holly Crap it was incredible. I had a burger that tasted as if it was homemade. Such fresh ingredients, all prepared with level of skill I would expect in a fine dining establishment. My Hubs loves a fresh burger but our Server advised us the burgers were frozen but still a popular choice so he decided to try the Xtreme Burger anyway and quite enjoyed it.
