At…read morepresent the store has a lovely christmas display in their window, which caught my eye, so I went in to have a look. The first thing to hit me was the lovely cinnamon smell as I entered. On browsing I discovered all kinds of different items for sale, ceramics, cards, hello kitty brand items and many other knick-knack type items. On deeper investigation I noticed that the prices weren't as competitive as their neighbours'. The glassware was quite expensive for what it was and they had some button earrings on sale - which were literally buttons attached to earrings - that cost £10, which i thought was pretty high for what they were. Still, it's always worth having a look in these shops as everyone has different taste, and invariably there will be some little treat that you might find. All in all a nice little shop with a few cool things to see.

I had…read morepopped into this one for a card and decided to check out the other one, mentioned to me as I was making my purchase. They both sell cards and gifts but the range here seems to aimed at different customers. There are gifts and stationary items from the Hello Kitty brand and a range I had not come across before - Momiji dolls. They seem quite a cult thing when I looked them up on the internet later on but something that might appeal to teenage girls. There was also a 'Top Model' range. Something else I hadn't come across before either, probably due to my age (mid-twenties, too old to be interested but to young to have children that are). So you can find many gift items here and will probably be drawn in by the colourful window display that currently involves a gothic christmas tree.

In the window there is usually a selection of fine art paintings. On entering there are a a number of card stands with beautiful individual cards on sale, from hand made to equisite prints and more. There are a few gift items too, including some hand made jewellery, which must be made in store as when I was browsing I managed to sneak a peak at the workshop area since the curtain was open! As a fellow crafter I can certainly vouch for the quality of the materials and the items - very nice! All in all this shop is one of the nicer places for cards and gifts in Chapel Allerton. If you're in the vicinity go and take a browse!

This one has a real personal feel - when I asked what time they were open on the weekend the lady behind the till light heartedly said they didn't believe in opening on a Sunday and mentioned there was another 'Angel' shop up the road, with Radio 2 playing unobtrusively in the background Whilst the other sells wrapping paper, this one sells mostly cards but also jewelry that looked unique and hand made. Some of it that I really liked looked well made and of good quality whilst other pieces were not so interesting. There were a couple of very large teddy bears, possibly the largest I have ever seen! I'm not sure if they are hugely tasteful but someone must buy them. Perhaps for people with children? More unusually, this gift shop sells paintings - not just bog standard wall-covering ones but some that I could really imagine having in my home for aesthetic pleasure! I also noticed some ceramic figures, which aren't really my thing but these were lovely, very sensitively made.

A…read morelarge quantity of twee sentimentality has been injected into this shop and although the style does not comply with my own, The Card Room does provide a more intimate, local setting in which to purchase this style of card. Alongside the vast array of aforementioned cards, there is a random miscellany of gifts. Ranging from handmade jewellery to calendars, umbrellas to clocks, and photo frames to keepsakes, The Card Room has the bagatelle market covered. There is an entire baby section at the rear of the shop, and whilst I was there recently, a staff member was expertly guiding a gentleman around the selection of photo memory books for babies. The man in question did not take much encouragement to proudly announce that he had just become a Grandfather for the first time, regaling his assistant with her name and weight. It was a touching moment to overhear! If you were wondering, the baby was called Amber. The Card Room is a perfectly adequate shop in which to purchase a fairly conservative range of cards and knickknacks. Although I doubt I would make the detour from the city centre to visit the shop, for certain recipients, I would consider the trek.

The art supplies section is also pretty good and is somewhere that I do think The Works does tend to shine, as a company. There wasn't much to tempt me in terms of fiction, although if you're a big fan of romance or crime novels there's probably something here for you. The sections about gardening and cookery are a little more extensive. Really, though, I suspect the best way to shop her is to go in with an open mind rather than looking for a specific book.

Part book shop, part toy shop and part craft supplies store, the Works is cheaper than many of its rivals but rather haphazardly stocked, so there's no guarantee of an item that was there last week being there again. Because of this, however, there's always something new to look at, and you can never predict what you might find. Some of the books are great value for money too, with mind and body items like tarot card sets and hot stone massage kits being popular, so its a good place to come for presents, and the art supplies section is particularly good for beginners. Prices are bargain basement, so if you fancy trying your hand at watercolour or oil painting this is the place to start.

Had I have known this place was here I wouldn't of taken him anywhere near it as predictably he spent nearly an hour here gawping. After much resistance I finally gave in and allowed him to get something that looked half alien half wolf. He did try to explain to me what it was but I wasn't really listening. The best part though was that he had been a grumpy teenager for most of the trip but after a little while in this shops he was positively cheery.
