Before going on with this review, I have to admit that I have very little knowledge on how successful it is at what it is supposed to predominantly be, a bookshop. Their stock, without delving too far into it, seems to have the larger names you'd find in a small W.HSmiths, but with a friendlier price tag attached to it, but I'd never rely on it to stock something I desperately wanted to read.
Having spent 3 years as an Art student in Leeds, I am very familiar with using The Works as a place to stock up on very reasonably priced arts and crafts materials, ranging from canvases, to cheap paintbrushes, to acryllic paint, to PVA glue. The quality of their art materials are by no means professional, but as a struggling student, they were perfectly reasonable in my eyes. The one thing I absolutely have to praise in The Works, that I will forever use, is their "Pick n' Mix" £5-a-box stuff-in-as-much-as-you-can paper selection. Yes, for a fiver, they have a selection of different coloured and textured pieces of paper that you can mix and match. As a huge fan of all things stationary/arts and craftsy, it doesn't get much more exciting than getting paper from The Works. Sad, but honest. I just wish there was more of an atmosphere in the shop. read more
