Once we were already sitting at our table, I received a text saying I had been added to the waitlist, which was very odd. I ordered a cosmopolitan, and our server initially told me they were out. I asked if they were out of cranberry juice, and he had to go ask the bar. He came back and explained that they were actually out of their premade Cosmos, but that the bar could make me a fresh one. That was already a bit of a red flag to me. I appreciated that he checked, but unfortunately, the drink was just okay and definitely didn't taste like a Cosmo. We decided to order the coconut shrimp, which is listed on the menu as one of their favorite items and comes with their signature citrus sauce. When the appetizer arrived, it came with two packets of Ken's bang bang sauce instead. Our server dropped the food off and walked away without explaining anything. I completely understand if an establishment is out of something, but I would have expected to be notified rather than simply being given something completely different. I eventually had to go find him at the bar, where he was on his phone, and asked for the citrus sauce that was advertised on the menu. He told me he had looked for cocktail sauce, which is not what is advertised and not what I had asked for, but couldn't find any. He then came back with a horseradish aioli instead. Again, that wasn't the sauce I had asked for. I asked a third time for the citrus sauce, and it took about another 10 minutes for him to finally come back with a different sauce. By that point, there was only one shrimp left. The server seemed very new and not particularly well trained, and I don't necessarily blame him for that. To me, that is a management and training issue. Someone should have been available to properly guide him, especially when he was clearly unsure about something as simple as the sauces being served with an item on the menu. For a $22 appetizer, I really don't think it's unreasonable to expect to receive the sauce that is actually listed on the menu without having to ask three separate times. It's a shame because The Getaway has such a beautiful waterfront location, and I've been there several times in the past. Unfortunately, this visit felt like the place has really gone downhill. Between the strange waitlist situation, the disappointing cocktail, and the issues with a very simple appetizer, the whole experience was a hot mess. I'd still go for the view and maybe a beer or wine if you're already in the area, but I'd keep your expectations low.

After far too long, I finally got a drink and sat near the regulars. They were great, actually. They even asked, "What took you so long?" and joked that next time they'd get my drink because they watched the staff hand out free refills to their friends while I stood there waiting. Then I went to watch the band at halftime of the game I came for. And let me say -- I book bands for events, and this band was fantastic. I took a quick video to send to my team. Suddenly the manager walks right in front of my camera. Fine, whatever. I stop recording. I try again later just to see if she was targeting me -- and yep, she steps in again. Here's the ironic, hypocritical part: moments later, one of her friends sees two couples taking a photo at a table and the manager watched as her friend happily walks over to offer to take the picture for them. So I stepped up and said, "No, wait -- shouldn't you ask everyone in the background for permission first?" Because that was her whole issue with me filming the band. Meanwhile her buddies are taking photos and getting free drinks like it's nothing. When I went back to close my tab, I stood at the bar AGAIN while the staff ignored me all over again. What a joke. I thought this to be a part of MCG's way to give back to the community so I researched it. I found the programs to Be called Superhero's on Parade through Southeastern Guide Dogs. I believe it may have been the Havana Ballroom. There was plenty of food, drinks, and mingling. The Cuba Libre Restaurant staff were great, and the venue was well laid out and worked for this event very well. When we arrived around 6:30 PM on a Saturday evening for our event, we first mingled around the tables and near the cash bar. There were a bunch of large tables that we began to fill out. As our program began and announces made and awards given out, appetizers were passed out. We were offered Guacamole Cubano, Mama Amelia's Empanadas, and Shrimp Cocktail which we passed around to the entire table. Personally, I skipped the guacamole and shrimp dishes but absolutely loved the empanadas. Yum! Then, an individual Cuban House Salad was passed out with red wine vinaigrette. This was also quite tasty. Next came the entrees including a choice of Salmon Paradiso, Ropa Vieja, Citrus Chicken, or Paella Vegetariana. I was trying to decide between the Ropa Vieja (beef brisket) and the Citrus Chicken. While the Citrus Chicken sounded perfect, I asked the serving staff their advice, and they recommended the Ropa Vieja for a true taste of Cuba. I was happy that I did even though it may have been more heavy and with a kick than I was expecting. I'm still glad I ordered it though. It was wonderfully prepared! And then, everyone received Cuban Flan for dessert. The Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar celebrates Cuban heritage and explores Cuban flavors, music, art, and traditions. The mission of the restaurant is to provide an "escape" to Havana through exciting food and beverages and entertainment experiences to celebrate the Cuban people and their culture.
