Although I've been to the Catonsville Y before, I was mostly swimming at the time to prepare for triathlon. Now, I'm preparing for Hyrox so I see the gym with a different perspective. I like that they have a ski erg machine that's comparable to that used at the event. My favorite Y is the Weinberg location, and that one is different. They also have a rope, which is useful for training the shoulders/arms. It's just in an awkward place. When the roped is pulled out to full lenght for use I felt like I was in the way. I tried two different angles and both were the same. Oh well. Sorry, not sorry. It's a big Y! They've got several sections of weights, machines, cycling rooms and the..... I guess I'll call it, Crossfit room (which is small and a bit awkward, but it works). They have weighted bags for the lunges up to 40lbs. They also have plenty of (matching) kettlebells. AND, they have weighted balls for the ball toss. The only thing missing is the sled. You can go to the Weinberg Y for that. I like this Y as well. There's plenty of room, which is good because it's much more crowded (even mid-day) than my other Y's. I was also glad to see the staff cleaning the weight rack. I mean, not just wiping it down. They removed the weights, wiped down the rack where the weights were sitting, and place the weights back. They were also removing the scuffs from the wall with the magic eraser. No wonder it looks so clean. And of course I can always count on the fireplace to chill at after my workout. Come check it out. read more

I am writing to share feedback regarding my recent experience at the Catonsville Y related to Stay and Play hours. On a BCPS delayed start day, the facility did not clearly communicate any adjusted Stay and Play hours. The posted signage did not reflect the delayed schedule, and while staff observed me arriving with my child, this information was not proactively shared. I only learned of the adjusted hours after specifically asking. Clear and visible communication--especially on delayed start days--would help prevent confusion for families and improve the overall member experience. I appreciate your attention to this matter and hope it can be considered for future operations. read more

Update: I've started coming here regularly, doing my own circuit using cardio and weight machines. I bumped up my rating a star because I've spent more time and have been able to notice a lot more. Everything is in working order in the women's locker room, and it is always spotless. It's also spacious and at least when I come (admittedly not peak hours) I never took notice of the climbing wall before. I paid closer attention to the free weights, because when I get back to a further level of fitness, I'll be moving to those and not using the machines. There is a good selection and they all look to be in excellent shape. The pool looks inviting, so I am looking at times for an aqua aerobics class for next week. In short, this Y is now my home Y! Worth the extra miles to get here. read more

The rudest, most unprofessional staff I have ever encountered. They have regularly threatened to lock customers in the building, which seems to have temporarily stopped after I submitted a complaint. However, just tonight, Ryan turned the lights off on me while I was discussing the pool schedule with another staff member, disrespecting both me and his coworker. The staff treats you like you're wasting their time. They're obsessed with not having to stay a single second past closing to the point of mistreating everyone who comes in late (which you HAVE to do to use the pool, because almost the entire pool is reserved for lessons from 5:00-8:00). It's more of a daycare than a gym, especially in the summer. Unless you come very early or very late, expect the Y to be swarmed with screaming toddlers. With a few exceptions (namely Mary Grace and the lifeguard whose name I unfortunately didn't catch), the staff are either rude, incompetent middle-aged folks or underpaid and overworked teenagers. If you have the option, go to the Elliott City location instead. This YMCA has caused me so much stress, and it's not worth it. I deserve better and so do you. Maybe if you just wanted to use the gym equipment, you'd have a better experience, but trying to use the pool here has been truly awful. It's negatively impacting my life. read more

I love the staff and the facilities. Everyone is always friendly. The instructors are always high energy, and the place is always clean. I never have any issues with the equipment and I really enjoy their seasonal touches. The only drawback is that it's smaller and the class offerings aren't as robust as other locations. read more

Good spot to hit the gym up at. My favorite amenity is that there are two big rooms where they host work out classes at, that when not in use, you can work out in. They have free weights (up to 20lbs in one room) and barbells to add weights on. It really helps when the two squat racks are taken up, and sometimes when I'm just trying to get through a work out fast, there's everything I need there in one space. Plenty of cardio machines and pretty much double of all the strength machines. I also appreciate there's 5 areas to use the cable machines at. I usually come here during lunch and it varies from day to day if crowded or not, but usually a similar crowd every day. Parking: plenty! Cost: really not bad. 39 for the month. If you follow me, then you know over past several years I have belonged to several gyms. I moved 3 times in about 5 years. But lasts years catastrophic experience with LA Fitness on Washington Blvd(read my several updated reviews) . I needed to find another gym in my area. Enter The Y. I won't sugar coat, The Y is a bite more expensive. Which runs about 20.00 more dollars a month for a single membership than my last 2 gyms (LA Fitness & Gold's Gym) . And it's much smaller than the other. However, the extra $20.00 is completely worth it. It was recently updated it has an indoor pool. Decent size cardio department including ellipticals, treadmills, recumbent bikes, regular bikes, arc trainers, 2 row machines and 1 stair climber. Free weight room, and decent section of weight machines. 2 group exercise rooms (an awesome selection of classes and great instructors) A shake counter which they recently extended their hours to accommodate the members. A lounge area for 13 and older Mountain climbing wall. And let's not forget all of the extra programs for kids, swimming, karate, dance and more (extra cost with the membership) Here's the most important thing..... Its extremely clean. They just converted to sanitizer wipes, from the spray & towel. Wipes make it there is no, not spraying enough to kill the germs. And when I'm here in there morning. There is a fabulous young lady who goes around after the crazy rush of people have left and wipes all of the cardio equipment down. I've never felt like this gym's Staff doesn't care. Any complaints, comments or suggestions get heard and taken note of. Not five stars, simply because as I have come few times in the evening now.. It really does need to be bigger. I will stick with my 6 am time. read more

It's a really nice facility, I only use the gym portion of the building but the staff are friendly and knowledgeable about whatever concerns you may have. It can get a little crowded on evenings/nights but that's to be expected. I do wish they had a few more machines but because of the space that they're working with it's not possible at the moment. read more

If you're looking for an affordable gym in the area, look no further! With the new renovations they now have everything...two group exercise rooms, a cycling room, a separate weight room, a rock climbing wall, a pool, tons of exercise equipment, a fireplace, a smoothie bar, and kids club and a room with computers in case you need to catch up on work in between sets! The parking lot has even been expanded so that you can usually find parking without any issues though prime time hours are still crowded! They also have a great inclement weather policy so you don't have to feel rushed when there is a school delay...they truly believe in safety first for all members and employees!! read more

Really nice renovations! Stopped in to check it out and left with a lot of information and 5 day pass for the a future visit. The place is a lot bigger and offers a lot of nice modern amenities. When I came pack for class with my 5 day pass I had to issues coming in and trying it out. Used a few machines and had no wait and got to my zumba class early. The class was great, the room bright, large, and good fans to keep us cool! I am excited to join this YMCA in the next week. read more

Today is actually my husband and I 26th year of living in Maryland and my 17th year of retirement, and my second time signing up as a Y member. In retrospect as a child I was a member of the YWCA in my home state of New Jersey. So today's registering again felt like coming back home. The experience was pleasant, the atmosphere is friendly, every thing is neat, clean, and easily accessible. My husband and I registered together and our Fit Quest meeting starts next week although we can come in anytime before then and explore. We are very excited and looking forward to the pleasant experience I already know we are going to enjoy! I believe the decision and the timing ($1 join fee) is a perfect way to start the new year! I love this gym and the folks who work there. Friendly and knowledgeable. I can't recommend any specific trainer because they're all good. (Ok...Zack and Avery are really good. Avery had my son gassed during one workout) The gym is small but efficient. Although there are few to zero muscleheads, there is a decent amount of heavy lifting equipment; squat tracks, incline and decline benches. There are lots of classes for just about everybody; yoga, spinning. There is also a decent sized pool that is always crowded on the weekends. The Y provides day care services too. The Y is a good place to work out for everyone. It's a little more than some places, but it's worth it if you can afford it. read more

This place is the best deal you're gonna get on a gym membership. Most classes are included with the monthly membership fee and personal training is offered for an additional fee. There is a swimming pool, showers, and lockers available. There is even a daycare center on site for busy parents who need to get a workout in! This is a great community center. You will often find a wide variety of people of all ages here at all times. I love the Y!!! read more

What a great place! They just did renovations, and it's like new. Now, this isn't a big as some other Y's, but it more than does the job. The staff is friendly and always willing to help out. The place includes a pool, cardio machines, two rooms for classes, a shake/ smoothie bar, a pool, a climbing wall, and two nice places to hang out if you're waiting for someone. Staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is much nicer than a commercial gym. There's never any pressure to pay for anything extra, Cancelling membership is simple and the facility is clean. However, for the premium price the Y charges the equipment is poorly maintained. Equipment is broken for weeks, several treadmills are very loud, 20% of the TVs have no sound, missing channels, a bad picture, no picture or some other issue. At least a couple of classes are cancelled each week, pool is closed for some amount of time every week. I sent an email to the executive director once telling her about the broken TVs. She replied that all of the TVs had been tested and found working. The next morning I had to try five treadmills before I found a TV with working sound. Three days ago I sent an email to the facilities manager about an elliptical that has been broken for almost a month. The sign on it says to expect it to be fixed by July 7. I have yet to receive a reply to that email. It's still broken. read more

What is going on with the pool at the Catonsville location? During the summer it seems to be closed a lot!! Most of the closures come with no explanation as to why until last week when there was a "fecal accident" . My concern is that for this admitted accident, the pool was closed until the next morning, however, other closures are handled and the pool reopens within hours! It leaves me wondering how clean and sanitzed the pool really is. read more

My boyfriend and I had a membership with the Y in Randallstown for a few months. We were not satisfied at all with the staff or the cleanliness of the locker rooms. However, the Y in Catonsville was completely opposite. The staff greeted us as soon as we came in, we were given Information pamphlets on the membership and activities that were happening that month. The staff at the center front desk walked us around willingly to each area of the Y and answered questions with ease. The pool is nice and the locker rooms were under construction at the time but weren't bad at all. I can't wait to start my membership at the Y in Catonsville. I give the 4-5 stars as I haven't been a member at this location to give it a 5 star but I know I'll enjoy the Y. read more

'Not for anyone over 50 years old. The new fitness system (Fitquest?) is an abomination. Instead of learning a routine with the help of the, formerly, great staff you are now faced with variations of 26 different machines on a daily basis. It's called a "routine" for a reason. The computerized systems reduces the workload of staff, who now sit and stare at their Iphones or start doing their stretches beside their desks before their shift ends. Gone, too, is the point system that refected our years of work to get to the higher levels. Now all postings are about what you did in the past month. We were assured that our Fitlinxx points would be preserved. Another lie. Good news is no one seems to be using the new system at my Y (Catonsville). read more

before choosing YMCA in Cationsville ask about the personal trainers references. I not stating that they are all negligence in their futies.But if you pay for a 30 minute session.and they only have you do three machines you won't see much improvement.Then you have one trainer there that rushes your session.so he go be at the Ellicott City YMCA. It Sometimes you would feel that you didn't even.getba work out. Also if you ask some of the other staff that work there how to use certain.machines they acted like they were deaf.Look for information.about other gyms nearby read more

Wonderful gym and looks great after the renovations. My gripe is there are not enough bars for all of the benches, there is always one bench without a bar because there aren't enough. I cannot, will not, give 5 stars until there are more barbells. One for every bench and one extra as well like other locations have. Still a good gym. read more

The renovations helped but this gym is still SERIOUSLY lacking. They finally do have 4 benches (2 flat, and 2 incline) which has helped tremendously. However, where is the second or third squat/multipurpose rack? On average people are waiting around 15-30 minutes for the squat rack, which is insane. Only reason I go here is because its the only decent gym in Catonsville. Once they get more squat/multipurpose racks I would rate this gym about 4 stars. Also, membership prices are extremely high for the lack of equipment. When comparing the price I pay here to Gold's gym, Gold's is actually cheaper, however it is further which is why I do not belong there. read more
