I have gone to this liquor store twice in the past month because it was in the vicinity and convenient at the time. BOTH times the guy at the check out was talking/listening on his earbuds and I had no idea if he was talking to me or what at first. Totally did not give a shit about the customer (me) . Finally says after I tap my card, "bla bal bla" to whomever he was talking to and waves me away! What an ass! Twice rude and I will never go there again. One of the employees not only showed us where the item was that we were looking for, but offered us some tips by way of a few new concoctions! I finally got to stop by Wine Merchants after having driven by this location several times. I was pleasantly surprised as I walked in with the volume of the type of drinks and how neatly they were organized. The store is very spacious and highly organized in aisles. They have a separate walk-in freezer for beers over 12 pcks (AWESOME)!! Great selection of bourbons and scotches as well. This is my new favorite place for alcohol. I'm a bartender and like to go out to get my own liquors to mix with at my own home. I go to this place for convenience only. They barely have any liquor you want-but always have liquor nobody will buy and there's always empty shelves in this place. It's really sad that every time I go in here, I have to think "okay how can I substitute this in the drink". When asking for nips, it's almost like playing on a game show or playing Go Fish. "Do you have this back there" or "what about this? Do you have this back there?" I truly don't feel bad asking because the way it's set up, you cannot read half the nips they have behind the counter. Speaking of, when asking if they have a certain nip back there, fully expect some eye rolls and sighs from the teller. I'm so sorry that your life is that bad that you have to stand behind a counter all day and finally when someone asks you about the nips behind you, you have to turn around, look for the bottle, take the (maybe) 5 steps to grab the bottle and walk back to the counter. But even then, they still come back to the counter and say that they don't have it. My final straw with this store was that I went there last night after a long day of work and then a bad shift of bartending-just not a good day overall. As you can see from the picture, they should have been open till 10:00pm. It was 8:59pm-an hour before they closed. Their entrance door does not work-fine. Not sure why that has not been fixed yet, but not my store so it's not my decision. The sign said to go through the exit door. I walked to the exit door and did not open for me. 5 minutes later, someone came to the door and opened it asking if it was an emergency. I responded no and that I thought they were open. It should also be noted that their store hours are not posted anywhere on the windows. I was sent away an hour before they apparently close and from what I could see, the person who sent me away was the cashier who then decided to sit on their phone behind the counter. So after typing all of this, looking back on how I said that this place is convenient to go to? It would be more convenient to go to the local Walmart because they will have at least some of what I'm looking for rather than go here and look for substitutes. Not only do I have a degree in management, but also took classes in business management, as well as owning my own small business. And as for this liquor store? Well, if I was the owner, I would be disgusted with not only my employees, but the lack of effort I see in the store and would be absolutely embarrassed. As an owner, knowing everything that's going on, keeping up with your duties, and maintaining a store is quite that hassle and sometimes one might slip a little or even fall so I do not want to insult the owner(s) with this review, but I truly hope this is an eye opener that a licensed bartender would rather go to their local Walmart to purchase their liquor than you-an actual liquor store. read more

This place has the biggest selection and the best prices ever. The bottles that I usually buy are half-price here and I'm definitely going to be a repeat customer.The girl at the front counter was very polite and helpful. You could always find what you're looking for here! From a grand selection of wines to a even bigger selection of IPA beers you can find what your looking for . Great selection and competitive prices for the area. Unfortunately, the lower rating is due to the staff and service, or lack there of. I was extremely disappointed to hear of my father's latest experience. He is not the youngest man on the block, he won't admit it of course, but was having some difficulty finding a gift for a party he was attending. When he asked for assistance from the gentleman working, he proceeded to bark directions at him while staring at down into his phone. This continued when he asked if he could bring him to the appropriate section that he was having trouble finding. Wine Merchants has taken over the former Chef's building on the Berlin Turnpike. Thank goodness for the taxpayers of Berlin, CT! Even though I enjoy going to Berlin Spirits in town, for wine lovers and snobs, Wine Merchants beats them in selection and price. Many of the wines are priced $9.99 and BELOW! This makes wine tasting more affordable and plentiful! There are fruit-infused white wine like orange and pear. There are even combo deals; like the Covey Run 2010 red wine and merlot priced at three bottles for $12. Some Moscatos are priced $9.99. The young ladies who work there are very friendly. This is a very nice new liquor store, conveniently located, clean, brightly lit, solid selection. I've seen greater selections at other stores, but since this one is relatively new, I'd say "give 'em a chance" to round out their arsenal. An EXCELLENT Mix-a-six shelf. That's almost a requirement these days for larger beer purveyors. What with the explosion of the craft beer industry and the thirst for imports, I am impressed that nearly a full half aisle (I know, oxymoron) is dedicated to many different individual bottle selections, perhaps 150 or so, just guesstimating. I decided to go for one to try out new stuff, and my total was $13 and change. One should expect higher per-bottle prices when buying individual bottles, so I consider this a reasonable markup. I found the gentleman working the register to be very nice - certainly not the type of person who would ignore people and bark out orders while clinging to his phone. Overall, it's a pleasant alternative to the several other liquor stores on the ol' Pike. read more

Purchased some beer Saturday night. The labels on the bottles said Best By 5.10.2017. yes over 2 1/2 years old and they were still selling them. I drove an hour to my event and then we opened 4 bottles and the didn't taste right so we looked at the labels and noticed the date. I immediately called the store to let them know and they said to bring back the remaining bottles and they would give me a full refund for ALL the bottles I bought. I went back to the store the next day and the cashier had to call his boss Jenny to see how to process refund. She told him to only give me money back for 12 out of the 16 bottles I purchased because state laws say they can't give refund for opened alcohol. I told them I was not paying for old beer that I didn't drink. I asked to speak to the manager and she told the cashier she refuses to talk to me. I was told if I gave them my number they would call me back. That hasn't happened yet. That was a horrible customer experience and unprofessional of that manager. She should have given me full refund and then went after her distributor to refund her. DO NOT GO THERE!! I have contacted the manufacturer and the distributor to let them know about this situation. read more

I have thought about this all night I don't like to ever give a place a bad review however after what I witnessed last night I feel that I need to. As I go in this place regularly there's a new lady with in the course of seeing her two times she picked up on what my items are so as soon as she sees me coming they are on the counter ready. She is very polite always has a smile and goes that little extra mile for customers. So I happen to go in there last night, there was a good amount of customers some seem to be in there for the first time and others are regulars and I witnessed Angela yelling at the new lady. When the lady asked her to please not yell there are customers in there Angela raised her voice continue to yell walked over to the manager and proceeded to discuss the situation. Anyone in management knows you don't yell at an employee in front of anyone let alone customers! Angela carried herself and a very poor manner the work ethics flew right out the window I feel is very poor management and because of it I will no longer do business there nor will I recommend to anybody to go to the establishment . No one should ever yell at another employee in that manner I was very embarrassed for her. Very poor management read more

This place is terrible. I went in last night to buy a "nip" bottle for an elderly neighbor. These are kept behind the counter. I walked to the end and leaned over so I could see. The idiot behind the counter barked " you can't come behind the counter" . (Which I wasn't) I must have looked like a shoplifter. I know I'll be going to a better place because I just chose to walk out. Never to return. Suggest you do the same. read more
