As we walked inside to the bar to order our first drinks we encountered staff challenging a chap of much advanced years, dressed like a drab Quentin Crisp, who attempted to use his mobile phone in the pub. I later spotted him outside, drink in one hand and mobile phone against his ear, he was chatting, leaning against the wall trying unsuccessfully to look nonchalant. They describe themselves as a 'digital detox pub'. The chief rule is no mobile phones as they want customers to talk to each other. How novel, quirky and eccentric in the 21st century. No swearing and no music either. Them rules are strictly enforced and you will be evicted if them rules ain't followed promptly. If I'm ever in York again I'll be sure to return for the stout and the insults.

But as a drop in lunch time pub it isn't all bad. Take their pies, oh how I love their pies, they make their own fillings and proper home made short crust pastry, none of this frozen rolled out teeny tiny cut out excuses plopped on the top of the filling nonsense that is so frequently used these days! I know my pies, and I know my pastry, I'm a self confessed pie connoisseur what can I say? But today I rang the changes with Fish and Chips, which although looked amazing (photo duly uploaded), a full 10/10 for presentation, sadly the batter was grossly undercooked, and although the fish was ok, the accompanying teeny tiny ramekin of 'marrow fat' peas were well, dismally disappointing. If you're going to have a guiltily dirty portion of F&C surely a Yorkshire size dollop of proper vibrant green mushy peas is part of the dirty food deal, right? You can't knock their home made chips which are fabulous, it's a tad tough to manage a full portion but that's the only problem you'll have in general here. My colleague demolished the Chorizo burger with Wookey Hole cheese and judging by the lack of left overs there were no complaints there. It would be nice to see something on the menu leaning slightly less towards a cardiac arrest but this is a pub not a health food shop after all. If the Deramore lets itself down on areas of its menu it truly comes into its own with its spectacular and generously portioned Ploughman's and Cheese Board's. It's worth the wait for the warmer months when you can sit in their beer garden, squinting in the sun with a cheeky naughty lunchtime half. Failing that their Monday night pub quiz is a riot of fun though keep your expectations for winning in check, there are some seriously large student brains that will give you a run for your £1 entry fee.

Best find on holiday ever!!…read more Set in a beautiful little village with a huge village green with loads of parking round and about (although im sure that on a mid summer sunny day parking may be somewhat difficult!). The pub has a bar area and a restaurant area - we only ever went into the bar as you could eat int here and it was really cosy (dogs are also allowed!). The staff were incredibly friendly and chatty (lets face it, Yorkshire, particularly North Yorkshire folk are possibly the most friendly on the planet - i challenge you to disprove this!). The food was INCREDIBLE. Nothing fancy pants, just really good food, VERY big portions (trust me on this, you dont need three courses - choose your weapon of starter or dessert to go alongside your main - we made the mistake one night and 1) couldnt eat it all and 2)pretty much rolled home). We spent an evening in the pub, had a meal and then sat playing card games - we felt incredibly welcome. So welcome that we ended up visiting three times in a week long holiday. You cant really get a better recommendation than that can you??
