During the weeks before we moved my grandmother into her new home, my mother and I visited Cottonwood/Westmont many times, at different times of the day and evening. We were always welcomed, but more importantly saw the amazing staff interacting with the residents with respect and genuine caring. In the weeks since her move, I have seen my grandmother come to truly enjoy all the members of the Cottonwood/Westmont team. My grandmother was hesitant to move to assisted living, but I'm happy to say, she loves her new home. Cottonwood/Westmont is a thoughtfully planned, person-centric, secure and welcoming HOME.

I wish I could give Westmont of Fresno a higher rating, but unfortunately I had a very…read moredisappointing experience. The two stars are solely for the facility itself. The building is beautiful, very well maintained, and clearly cared for with attention to detail. The grounds are lovely, and their memory care unit offers a generous amount of space for residents. If my review were based on appearance alone, it would be five stars. However, that is where my compliments end. We have been searching for a memory care facility for my father, and with his discharge from a skilled nursing facility approaching, we were feeling the pressure to secure a placement. My first visit to Westmont was discouraging. No one was available to give a tour, and the front desk staff was extremely unfriendly. I was told that tours only happen on weekdays between 9am-5pm and that "most people take the day off work" to do them. When I asked for a pamphlet or business card, they had nothing to give me. On our second visit, midday on a Thursday, we again encountered unprofessional front desk staff. Two receptionists were chatting, and one was practically laying across the counter, barely acknowledging me. They seemed annoyed that I needed help. Again, the person responsible for tours was not there despite it being within the hours they had previously insisted on. The maintenance director ultimately met with us, and while that was unexpected, he was great, very kind, informative, and gave a great tour. The memory care unit itself looked well-kept, so we decided to move forward. I spoke with their Community Relations Director, completed paperwork, and provided our credit card for the refundable $500 deposit to reserve a spot. We were told there were two spots available and four families trying to secure them, so we pushed hard to get everything done quickly. The skilled nursing facility's social services manager moved mountains to complete the necessary documentation within days, and Westmont even came out to do the care assessment. And then...nothing. No updates, returned calls, or responses to emails. Eventually, the social services manager was told that Westmont would not be accepting my father. She requested a reevaluation because the notes did not match his diagnosis, suggesting there had been a mix-up, but Westmont ignored her as well. I made MULTIPLE attempts to contact their Community Relations Director and never received a single reply. Not even a courtesy call after taking our deposit (which they stated was refundable, but no one communicated the process for that either). Regardless of the reason, whether the spot went to someone else or they determined he wasn't a fit, the professional and compassionate thing to do would have been to communicate that directly to us. Being ignored after we completed all the steps they asked of us was incredibly unprofessional and disheartening. For a facility of this size, I truly hope this was an isolated incident. This experience made it very clear that Westmont is not a place I could ever trust with my father's care. That said, I believe things worked out exactly as they were meant to. The next place we toured was Paintbrush Assisted Living and Memory Care, and it has been the perfect home for my father. Their Community Relations Director, Reuben, was warm and helpful from the start, and their Memory Care Director, Traci, is an absolute angel. They treat us like family, and I feel my father is in the best hands.

As a backstory, my dad has Lewy Body dementia and can unfortunately get very aggressive. He is 61 years old and strong- not at all your average dementia patient. Care staff was more than patient with him and I can't express how grateful I am for them. There does seem to be lots of miscommunication between care staff and management about resident behavior, as I would hear that he was doing better from management but care staff would give me the real story of how his aggression was not getting any better. I made the obvious decision to move my dad because Cedarbrook was just too big for him and he kept having issues with his aggression. It just was not working and that's not fair to put on anyone. I received a call the day before he was set to move that he was out of a certain medication and they were having trouble getting it filled. He had been out for a few days and they waited until him moving to let me know. The reason his medication couldn't be filled was because it's a narcotic (Ativan) that can only be filled every 30 days- the length of his prescription. Long story short, almost half of the bottle was unaccounted for. I reviewed the medication log with the director of nursing and she stated my father refused to take the medication and it was discarded each time. Sounds reasonable, but why wasn't that documented? Especially with a narcotic that is extremely monitored and will not be refilled early. During this, a staff member (I believe her name was Bao) also admitted that since my dad was out of this medication, they had been borrowing some from another resident. Again, my dad is extremely difficult, but that makes me upset for the other resident and their family. I should have been notified immediately and been given the opportunity to reach out to his doctor for assistance. No residents should be sharing a medication, EVER. Please be mindful of bringing your loved one here. Nursing staff on the floor is great, but they need better management and a stronger set of policies and procedures in place.

I have never…read morefelt more taken care of and have had this much peace of mind over my dad's condition due to the incredible level of care he has received here. Last year my dad entered Paintbrush after a hospital stint and within two months, he was so happy and doing so well. He decided to check himself out of Paintbrush because he thought he was healed, but Paintbrush was actually keeping him alive and healthy. Six months later, my dad had a severe brain bleed and was in the hospital for a month and then put on Hospice. I contacted Paintbrush in complete distress and Rueban remembered all the little details about my dad and who he is as a person and even visited him in the hospital multiple times. He completely took care of the situation and recommended the best Hospice team. When my dad entered Paintbrush he was unable to speak or stand. I was told he was not going to make it for another month but at the rate my dad is going he might go on for a very long time. He's so happy and he's talking and laughing with the med techs. They remember all the details about him, including what he likes and how he takes his medication and just monitor his overall well-being and mood. Visitor hours are at any time, which is so helpful for me because I live out of town and often will come see him very late at night. The food is like a four star restaurant, every time I see my dad eat dinner I am blown away by his meals. Everything is kept really clean, and my dad is on the highest level of care, so they check in on him constantly. They directly communicate with the Hospice team when anything goes wrong... my dad has fallen a few times and has had other issues and right away they communicate. I live in Los Angeles and I had no idea what to expect with care in Fresno and I would send absolutely anyone's parents here or loved ones. It's hard for me to be in town all the time so it's very important for me to know he's taken care of and treated with dignity. Thank you so much, Paintbrush. Your work makes a difference in so many people's lives and saves lives including my Dad's. Oh and interior! It almost reminds me of a Disneyland resort when you walk in. It's SO NICE and happy.

As soon as we met Traci, the Memory Care Director, we knew our search was done and that we found a place where our dad would be in excellent hands and cared for like family. Reuben was incredible as well and made the onboarding process so smooth during an already difficult time. When we shared how important it was to have our dad moved before the holidays, their team went above and beyond to make it happen. Every visit since, they take the time to check in on us and give us updates on how he's doing. It means so much to see how genuinely they get to know not only my dad, but all of us. There's such a feeling of kindness and investment in every interaction. Memory care isn't easy, and we know this journey only gets harder, but we feel so much comfort knowing that Traci and her team will be there to walk alongside us through it all. We are deeply grateful for the compassion, communication, and care they show every single day. Paintbrush deserves every one of these five stars.
