I wish I could give Westmont of Fresno a higher rating, but unfortunately I had a very…read moredisappointing experience. The two stars are solely for the facility itself. The building is beautiful, very well maintained, and clearly cared for with attention to detail. The grounds are lovely, and their memory care unit offers a generous amount of space for residents. If my review were based on appearance alone, it would be five stars. However, that is where my compliments end. We have been searching for a memory care facility for my father, and with his discharge from a skilled nursing facility approaching, we were feeling the pressure to secure a placement. My first visit to Westmont was discouraging. No one was available to give a tour, and the front desk staff was extremely unfriendly. I was told that tours only happen on weekdays between 9am-5pm and that "most people take the day off work" to do them. When I asked for a pamphlet or business card, they had nothing to give me. On our second visit, midday on a Thursday, we again encountered unprofessional front desk staff. Two receptionists were chatting, and one was practically laying across the counter, barely acknowledging me. They seemed annoyed that I needed help. Again, the person responsible for tours was not there despite it being within the hours they had previously insisted on. The maintenance director ultimately met with us, and while that was unexpected, he was great, very kind, informative, and gave a great tour. The memory care unit itself looked well-kept, so we decided to move forward. I spoke with their Community Relations Director, completed paperwork, and provided our credit card for the refundable $500 deposit to reserve a spot. We were told there were two spots available and four families trying to secure them, so we pushed hard to get everything done quickly. The skilled nursing facility's social services manager moved mountains to complete the necessary documentation within days, and Westmont even came out to do the care assessment. And then...nothing. No updates, returned calls, or responses to emails. Eventually, the social services manager was told that Westmont would not be accepting my father. She requested a reevaluation because the notes did not match his diagnosis, suggesting there had been a mix-up, but Westmont ignored her as well. I made MULTIPLE attempts to contact their Community Relations Director and never received a single reply. Not even a courtesy call after taking our deposit (which they stated was refundable, but no one communicated the process for that either). Regardless of the reason, whether the spot went to someone else or they determined he wasn't a fit, the professional and compassionate thing to do would have been to communicate that directly to us. Being ignored after we completed all the steps they asked of us was incredibly unprofessional and disheartening. For a facility of this size, I truly hope this was an isolated incident. This experience made it very clear that Westmont is not a place I could ever trust with my father's care. That said, I believe things worked out exactly as they were meant to. The next place we toured was Paintbrush Assisted Living and Memory Care, and it has been the perfect home for my father. Their Community Relations Director, Reuben, was warm and helpful from the start, and their Memory Care Director, Traci, is an absolute angel. They treat us like family, and I feel my father is in the best hands.

It has been necessary to hide phone number to get them to answer. The care team has a high turnover rate and some are not properly trained and behave unprofessionally. They are not licensed to administer a simple blood pressure reading or test a patient's insulin levels. The facility is very beautiful and clean and there are staff who are very kind and knowledgeable but improvement is needed. This review is not intended to reflect that all staff need to improve but to advise newcomers to address some of these issues prior to making your decision to place your loved one in the facility. I am more than willing to update my review when improvements are made.

As a backstory, my dad has Lewy Body dementia and can unfortunately get very aggressive. He is 61 years old and strong- not at all your average dementia patient. Care staff was more than patient with him and I can't express how grateful I am for them. There does seem to be lots of miscommunication between care staff and management about resident behavior, as I would hear that he was doing better from management but care staff would give me the real story of how his aggression was not getting any better. I made the obvious decision to move my dad because Cedarbrook was just too big for him and he kept having issues with his aggression. It just was not working and that's not fair to put on anyone. I received a call the day before he was set to move that he was out of a certain medication and they were having trouble getting it filled. He had been out for a few days and they waited until him moving to let me know. The reason his medication couldn't be filled was because it's a narcotic (Ativan) that can only be filled every 30 days- the length of his prescription. Long story short, almost half of the bottle was unaccounted for. I reviewed the medication log with the director of nursing and she stated my father refused to take the medication and it was discarded each time. Sounds reasonable, but why wasn't that documented? Especially with a narcotic that is extremely monitored and will not be refilled early. During this, a staff member (I believe her name was Bao) also admitted that since my dad was out of this medication, they had been borrowing some from another resident. Again, my dad is extremely difficult, but that makes me upset for the other resident and their family. I should have been notified immediately and been given the opportunity to reach out to his doctor for assistance. No residents should be sharing a medication, EVER. Please be mindful of bringing your loved one here. Nursing staff on the floor is great, but they need better management and a stronger set of policies and procedures in place.

As soon as we met Traci, the Memory Care Director, we knew our search was done and that we found a place where our dad would be in excellent hands and cared for like family. When we shared how important it was to have our dad moved before the holidays, their team went above and beyond to make it happen. Every visit since, they take the time to check in on us and give us updates on how he's doing. It means so much to see how genuinely they get to know not only my dad, but all of us. I have only one complaint and it's a big one. The food is terrible. It is inconsistent as though a bunch of unqualified staff are helping out in kitchen. The mashed potatoes or whatever are too salty, too spicy, to eat? Chef says, "sorry, "they" get carried away sometimes." For the amount we pay, I don't expect a restaurant meal every day but very close to it. The cheapest frozen cuts of meat are used, the meatloaf, Salisbury steak texture is that of dry cardboard. One time Salisbury steak was served. It was a 4x4 less than 1/4 quarter inch slice of something. Vegetables all seem to be frozen and is always squash and carrots w/onions or broccoli, cauliflower and carrots, either under or over cooked green beans. We must'nt forget the corn! The menus rarely change, seems to alternate between 2 or 3 standard menus. On weekends there is a lot of hot dogs (chicken), sloppy joes, etc. My biggest concern other than not enjoying food anymore is the nutritional values. I'm diabetic, never had a problem with keeping in control with diet. However when served a meal of 4 baby back ribs (little actual edible protein) with sides of Mac and Cheese, Potato salad and Corn, keeping diabetes in control becomes a chore. My solution is to prepare as much as possible in my microwave and feed myself. That isn't working. I've been dealing with horrible diabetes symptoms and am in process of working with my doctor to fix it. Another major problem with my use of the dining room is I'll be fine at start of mealtime, however, they're so short staffed that sometimes it takes almost an hour to get food by that time, I'm in diabetic hell. I don't require special food or services. Just better. TruWood by Merrill Family needs to loosen their pocketbook and buy better quality, perhaps more qualified kitchen staff, more serving staff and try a little food diversity. Just cause we're old doesn't mean we're stupid. We know when things should be better. Furthermore, they have a monthly meeting with Chef and facility general manager for residents to air their complaints. I've attended and spoken out. All we get are excuses and platitudes. I'm not the only resident to complain about the food. Admittedly it's better than having to do it yourself, however, it needs to be done consistently well, served quickly, salad should be fresh, soup should be hot. If you're gonna do it do it properly. Other than the food quality and inconsistency, shortness of staff in kitchen and serving there are no reasons to hesitate to put yourself or family member here. It's a welcoming place with interesting activities.

There's coffee and water and cookies that never run out. There's comfortable chairs and couches. We had 3 nurses who were kind enough, gentle to an extent, and caring. I wish I got their names. However, Sue was the most appallingly abrasive, verbally abusive, insensitive nurse I've ever experienced, and I'm a nurse myself. I've never received care or witnessed care as careless and cold as Sue, and that's not even in hospice. And, in hospice, the nurses are known to be extra special, extra caring, extra soothing and gentle. Comforting, reassuring, soft. This woman will forever taint the memory of my dad's last 3 days. Fortunately, there are many positives with Hinds, and I'll try to focus on that, but Sue was so awful, it'll forever stand out in my mind. She fought us when we requested comfort meds. She downright refused sometimes. The very first time we met her, it was 3pm, nobody was sharing the room with my dad. And 4 of us were at my dying father's side. The moment she got on her shift, she started aggressively kicking us all out, in the middle of us praying and crying. It was terrifying. When I asked to speak with a doctor who had agreed to meds every 2 hours, Sue fought back and refused to give the meds until every 4 hours. This is hospice. This isn't palliative. The only goal is comfort. My father had the death rattle and she fought me hard. When she finally agreed to give him a comfort med, she dramatically crushed the med and said "you're forcing me". It was scary and appalling. There's more, but I'll leave it at that. The volunteers were so welcoming, so gentle and perceptive. The 3 other nurses who's names I can't remember were exponentially more kind, and one held and hugged me when my dad took his last breaths. The rooms themselves were comfortable. We were able to dim the lights. They offered a chaplain.
